Looking for solutions in Somaliland:
• With 65% of our people being nomads, we need more senior midwives and doctors as well as hospitals that are strategically located throughout the country.
• We do have an ongoing training of doctors and senior midwives doing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Midwifery
• With our limited resources, we know that coverage with doctors and graduate midwives will not be possible for a long time which is why we have chosen a low-tech, low-cost and time-effective solution : To train as many Community Midwives as we can, now !
Somaliland needs 1000 Community Midwives : • Each one costs $3700 to train over a period of 18
months ( $6.8 a day )
• They are educated and trained to perform clean and safe deliveries .
• They can identify major problems to refer in good time women needing a higher level of obstetrical care.
• Community Midwives have helped reduce the MMR at our referral hospital from
