Atitle that it now shares with the likes ofGermany, France and the UnitedStates, where e-music is not only acontroversial topic (isitaformofartornot?) but also big business.According to a study commissioned bythe organizers of the Rio MusicConference, the largest gathering of e-music and entertainment in theSouthern Hemisphere, which is takingplace this month in Rio de Janeiro, ticket vendors collected $515 millionfor electronic music events in 2011, up56.64% from the previous year. Thestudy also shows that the e-musicsegment in Brazil reached an audienceof 19.5 million people last year, whospent another $626 million onaccommodation, food, transportationand other items. Inspite of its populations predilectionfor late-night dance parties, thecountrys sizzling economy has a lot todo with it. Most of the bash-goers whoattend e-music events in Brazil aretwenty or thirty-something, well-heeled, middle-class citizens whodont mind paying a fairly high pricefor fancy fare (tickets for a DavidGuetta concert held in Sao Paulo lastmonth were sold for up to $600 perperson). WithLED panels synced to the beats, DaftPunk decor and doors that stay openuntil noon, D-Edge which wasopened in 2003 became theultimate clubbing address for the citysdiscerning e-music aficionados. But few places in Brazil haveexperienced such a dynamic growth inthe e-music business as the city ofBalneario Camboriu, a busy summerresort that is fast becoming Brazilsanswer to Miami.
