Forged under Fire Dallas Military Order News Volume 27, No. 11 Best Large Chapter in the Nation May 2019 This month’s Program, May 2019 NSDQ (Night Stalkers Don’t Quit) Major General Clayton Hutmacher, former Commander of the 160 th Special Opera- tions Aviation Regiment (Night Stalkers), will travel all the way from Tampa, Florida, to address the chapter and share with us his work on behalf of Joint Special Operations Warriors. The Night Stalkers are Special Operations avia- tors, the flying equivalent of the Navy SEALs. No task is too dangerous, no challenge unanswered, no man is left behind. Night Stalkers are bats, using night vision goggles (NVG) they skim the tree tops in the pitch black of night and soar at 150 mph, 10 feet off the desert floor, to insert Special Forces A-Teams or rescue men whose missions are compromised. MG Hutmacher is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation Last month’s Program, April 2019 “The Museum of America’s Fighting Forces” General Gordon Sullivan, the 32 nd United States Army Chief of Staff, had to cancel his trip to Dallas to attend a funeral of GEN John Abrams, a close personal family friend. GEN Sullivan sent his sincere regrets and promised to return to Dallas at his earliest opportunity. Meanwhile, his Number Two man, Mr. David Cotter, stepped in and presented a superb review of the work being done on the $250 million dollar National Museum of The US Army, scheduled to open in 2020. We were enormously disappointed that GEN Sullivan could not attend, as planned, but we trust you understand the excep- tional circumstances that caused his last-minute cancellation. The Commander’s In-Box Mark Your Calendars Chapter Commanders and their Distaff from each of the 14 Chapters that comprise MOWW Region VIII, assembled at the Omni Park West Hotel, in Dallas, for the annual Region Convention. Saturday night’s Banquet called for Mess Dress uniforms and fancy gowns as they witnessed the installation of LTC Dan Foust (US Army, Ret) as the new Commander. Retired Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” Cole, the final surviving mem-ber of the storied Doolittle Raiders, died on 18 April, at 103.
His memorial service took place exactly 77 years to the day after the daring B-25 bomber raid on mainland Japan
Dick was the co-pilot for Col James “Jimmy” Doolittle aboard aircraft #1 of the 16 bombers who launched from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet.
In 2012, Dallas Chapter Companions and other members of the Dallas Veterans Day Parade chose the Doolittle Raid for their theme that year. Dick was scheduled to attend but was ill that November.
