Forests worldwide have been managed for a wide diversity of ecosystem services that are dictated by local society’s needs; superimposed on those needs are a cultural, historical, political and biophysical context.

Why?

An international perspective on forest management strategies provides keener insight into alternative ways of managing for specific resources, and ways to balance the demands for a complex array of ecosystem services. This study abroad experience explores the many styles of management for an unusually diverse range of forest types and ecosystem services that are typical of Spain.

Why?

Why? Spain’s forestry was already established in the middle ages and many lessons can be gained with a critical analysis of such a long period. Spain is characterized by a unique combination of Mediterranean and maritime forest types that are vulnerable to wide annual climatic fluctuations and potential future climatic shifts.

Academic objectives: • To understand the cultural, political, and

biophysical context of managing forest resources in Spain;

• To understand the importance of historical background on forestry in Europe

• To learn about the diversity of objectives and resources for which forests are managed in Spain;

Academic objectives (cont’d): • To explore management techniques applied to

achieve objectives established for the diverse forest types of Spain; and

• To gain insight into the connection between resource values, management approaches, national culture, and global pressures

Management of beech and oak forests in the Cantabrian Range

Strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation

Agroforestry in oak savannas under the “La Dehesa” system

Production of cork in Quercus suber (cork oak)

Forest Resources Management in Spain

Gain experience of the local culture of Castilla y Leon and neighboring regions: • Meals and lodging in

Palencia • Interaction with forestry

students at the University of Valladolid

• Daily field trips to parts of Castilla y Leon, Cantabria, and Extremadura

• Free time to explore Palencia

Non-refundable application fee (billed to student account at time of online application) - $50

Program Fee: The program fee payable to OSU College of Forestry is:

$2300. This covers tuition, lodging, most meals, transportation in Spain and from Madrid to Valladolid.

It does NOT cover airfare to Spain, some meals, or personal

expenditures. Students are advised to budget $1900 for these costs.

TOTAL estimated program cost: $4,250
