Dear Friends Welcome to the new e-version of Forest Link!
I'd like to kick off by recording an enormous debt of thanks to all the team of people who
kept the print version of FL going all these years: editors, printers, bundlers, deliverers, advertisers, administrators, and of course, you readers without whom non of it would be
worth doing. Unfortunately economics, shortage of deliverers, subscribers, and
advertisers has meant the old print version is no longer viable. However, we live in a new age of communications, where the internet has taken such an
amazing and central roll in many people's lives. It gives us opportunities to reach
quicker, easier, cheaper, more people than ever, so here comes the new era! Jesus' principal instruction to his followers is 'communicate the Message of the Kingdom!' We
can continue to do this via the internet. There will be a precis version in print for those
who don't have internet access.
We've now completed our three sets of annual meetings, in which I paid tribute to all
who've been involved in keeping our missions going over the last year. I'm delighted that St Michael's and All Saints nearly have their full complement of officers in place: Ann &
Gareth, George and Isabel as Wardens; Sue & Amanda as PCC Secretaries; a volunteer
tbc and Peter as PCC Treasurers. The story's more challenging at Christ Church where at
present we have Lucy continuing as Secretary, and Carole as Book Keeper, but no Wardens or Treasurer. This won't affect Christ Church staying open as a place of worship,
but may result in the parish being combined with another, to form a new united parish,
much as it once was before Admiral Boultbee built the church at the bottom of his garden, except Christ Church will still be there!
An exciting possible development in Emery Down follows on from a meeting had with some of the younger residents of the village. They're keen to grow community, with
Christ Church as an essential centre piece. There are no decisions as yet, but watch this
space!
In Minstead, the mission of the church both to a wider section of the village, and
especially to Young People is growing. I'm delighted that a new Mission Team of volunteers to look at work amongst the young is getting underway.
In Lyndhurst, you should have seen the new paths and steps are now in place, making a
more welcoming feel to the building, and the new servery is in progress, making
hospitality easier. The Heritage Fund application has the go ahead, but there's a long way to go yet. Each of the Mission Teams is investigating how they can make sure they have
Up-In-Out activity in balance.
Our bishop, Tim, is encouraging us to re-imagine ourselves as churches with the Mission
which Jesus commissioned us with at the beginning being our massive priority. Amen
from me to that. He's asking how we can be Passionate in our personal spirituality (regular worship, prayer, bible reading, fellowship in small groups are key here);
Pioneering in our Faith Communities (i.e. trying new ways of being church, reaching out
to others being the major focus); Prophetic in our relations with the world (in other words, bringing God's word to a needy world, as well as ourselves).
If we continue to grow in our Trust of Christ; and through this see our churches transformed increasingly into His likeness; we should see transformation in our local
community as we reach out more boldly, demonstrating and communicating the message
of the Kingdom. Now, this is where we came in...
God bless us as we Trust Christ to Transform Church and Transform Community in 2013
James

All That Is Precious by Joe Stowell
Throughout my life, I’ve accumulated a lot of stuff. I have boxes of things that at one time were important but over time have lost their intrigue. And, as an unrepentant collector, I’ve realized that the thrill is in searching for and acquiring a new piece to add to the collection. Then my attention turns toward the hunt for the next item. While we pile up many things that are important to us, very little of it is really precious. In fact, over time I have learned that the most precious things in life are not material items at all. Rather, it’s the people who have loved me and built into my life who are precious. When I find my heart saying, “I don’t know what I’d do without them,” I know that they are indeed precious to me. So when Peter refers to Jesus as “a chief cornerstone, elect, precious” (1 Peter 2:6), it should resonate in our hearts that He is truly precious—our prized possession above everything and everyone else. Where would we be today without the constant unfailing companionship of His faithful presence, wise and perfect guidance, merciful patience, comfort, and transforming reproof? What would we do without Him? I can’t even imagine!
Lord, help us not to focus on fleeting treasures but on You, our most precious treasure. Teach us the joy
of reveling in You and Your loving presence and provision in our lives.
