It is the only research centre of its kind in Poland, working under the aegis of the Ministry of Justice. Its statutory duties include: - research in the field of forensic science, - preparation of expert opinions for courts and public prosecutor's offices in criminal and civil cases,- the development and promotion of the forensic sciences.

The Institute carries out expert investigations and research in the following units:

before 1997 – informal collaboration between FCh JU and IFR 1997 – common idea of educational module called „forensic chemistry” as one of

objectives of the TEMPUS project „Transformation of University Chemistry Studies at the Jagiellonian University”(TRUCS),

1997/98 – formal introduction of this module to the chemical study at FCh JU 2000 – establishment of the Laboratory for Forensic Chemistry at FCh JU as one

of the objectives of the TEMPUS project „National Training Program for Forensic Science Experts” (NATFOSE),

2001 – formal agreement between FCh JU and IFR in the field of forensic

chemistry

2000/2001 – modification of the curriculum of module „forensic chemistry”

from 2002 – teaching of „forensic chemistry” according to new curriculum

FUTURE

• to make specialisation in forensic chemistry more and more attractive (e.g. to organise „artificial” trials, to prepare new interactive classes with the use of audiovisual and computer tools),

• to organise and open post-graduate study in the field of

forensic chemistry,

• to organise and open the „forensic” courses in the frame of „virtual university”

• to increase the scientific level of the forensic research performed,

• to expand the collaboration with national and foreign forensic/analytical centres
