TRUFFLE GOLD is the first case of a culinary crime series featuring German-French detective

Marie Mercier.

Parisian detective Marie Mercier has inherited a farm in picturesque St. André in the Périgord region

and is enjoying some time off. Immediately after her arrival, however, the mysterious death of a

biker from Bordeaux clouds her idyll. The detective on the case, Michel Leblanc, suspects the man

has been murdered out of jealousy. The victim was having an affair with the village beauty, and all

the young men were in love with her. Marie knows from a secret source that this cannot be the

case. And Leblanc, meanwhile, senses that she will cause him some nasty surprises.

MURDERED IN THE SAND

(Vol. 4)

A nameless corpse and clues of betrayal – buried deep in the sand

In the pristine natural setting of Bargsand, an idyllic island in the Elbe River, beach walkers make a

gruesome discovery. The skull of a skeleton is protruding from the sand. This raises puzzling

questions for Frida Paulsen and Bjarne Haverkorn of the Itzehoe criminal investigation unit. The

dead man had been buried there in the silt for a good thirty years, in a sitting position and with his

hands tied. Who was this man? There are absolutely no clues to his identity except for a mysterious

metal plate with a Cyrillic inscription. Then, shortly afterwards, a Hamburg building contractor is

found dead, also bound and buried in the silt of the neighboring island. The two police officers

suspect that the murders are related, even though the victims seem to have no connection.

The investigation leads Frida and Haverkorn back into the past – to a dark chapter of GDR history

and four boys who served time in the "green hell" of Torgau Prison. At the time, they made a

desperate pact to escape from the horrors of the notorious juvenile jail. But then one of the boys

committed a terrible betrayal, which years later gave rise to a cruel plan for revenge.Mordsand

Excitement reigns in a small village on the Adriatic coast in the 1950s. A man has been found dead

on a secluded path. Was it an accident or murder? And if it was murder, who killed the unpopular

schoolteacher who had campaigned against the increase in tourism? Since there are more than

enough people in the village who want to profit from the tourist trade, there are also plenty with a

motive for a murder.

Federica, the owner of a boarding house, has a burning interest in these questions. She is a widow,

has a razor-sharp mind, and is always well informed about everything that’s going on in the town

and in the world.

When Commissario Lorenzo Pellegrini from Pesaro finally arrives to investigate the case, Federica

is delighted that he takes quarters in her boarding house, of all places. This puts her right at the

source of information.

Together with Commissario Pellegrini and two of her German vacationers, Federica sets off under

the warm Adriatic sun to hunt down the killer. But before they can bring the truth to light, they must

first untangle an intricate web of lies, half-truths, and intrigue.

A remote Benedictine monastery in the Mont Blanc region houses a little-known research facility

with a powerful supercomputer. Scientists from across the globe are invited to come and conduct

research, thereby proving that religion and science do not necessarily contradict each other.

The idyll is abruptly shattered when young Father Sébastien, a monk and remarkable scientist, is

found crucified in the computer room. Shortly thereafter, the power fails. A storm has apparently

damaged the cable car, and the monastery is cut off from the outside world. Suffragan Bishop

Lombardi, who is visiting from the Vatican to find diversion from his problems, and physicist Samira

Amirpour begin to investigate but are baffled.

Lombardi discovers that Father Sébastien was on the trail of a discovery that could change the

world forever. It’s not long before Lombardi and Amirpour narrowly escape an attempt to murder

them. Risking their lives, they continue to investigate and discover that Sébastien, with the help of

the supercomputer – actually a revolutionary quantum computer – was working on a proof of God

based on research by the eminent mathematician Kurt Gödel. In the process, Sébastien discovered

evidence that seems to refute the existence of God.

Sister Isabella leads a contemplative life in a picturesque Tuscan village – in a nunnery. One

day, however, she is drawn into a murder investigation and quickly develops a liking for

detective work. Matteo, the young carabiniere in the village, is delighted to have her support.

After all, he’s the only policeman in town. Unfortunately, their hunt for the criminal all too often

puts then at odds with the convent’s Mother Superior and the mayor of Santa Caterina.

It's noon at the convent of Santa Caterina, and Sister Isabella wonders why the bells aren't

ringing for prayer. When she looks into the matter, she makes a terrible discovery: Sister

Raffaela is lying lifeless in the convent courtyard. The cheerful nun must have fallen from the

bell tower. But was it really an accident, as the Mother Superior unshakably contends? And

what is the meaning behind the number drawn in the dust next to the nun’s body? Together

with the young carabiniere, Matteo, Isabella investigates on her own and soon uncovers a

dark secret. At this point, only divine assistance can help!

CHERRINGHAM –

Killer Track

(Episode 39)

Cherringham is a serial novel à la Charles Dickens set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham.

The detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and

American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher

meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning

commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.

Every year Lady Reptonopens up her grand estate to host 'Cherringfest' -the Cotswold's

favouritemusic festival. But what should be a summer weekend of fantastic music, food and fun for

all, turns frightening when murder is threatened, and one performer is nearly killed. Soon Jack and

Sarah are in a race against time, trying to untangle a web of jealousy, egos and revenge before this

Cherringfestends in a deadly climax...

PRAISE for the series

“Comparisons with Midsomer Murders are inevitable, but Cherringham comes out on top when it

comes to originality and – probably most crucially – the avoidance of irritating stereotypes.”

– Killing Time Crime

“A bit of a cross between Midsomer Murders and Johnathan Creek […] It’s very cleverly written …! A

great little whodunit with some super characters!” – brookcottagebooks.blogspot.de

The Wrong Man

(Episode 7)

It is 1929. A new decade is approaching and with it an air of optimism. Despite the trials and struggles

ahead, the world is changing for the better in so many ways. Amelia Earhart has just crossed the

Atlantic. And the women of England – who now have the vote – are taking their place in society that has

been denied them so long. For most people in the English Home Counties, life goes on, comfortably

enough.

The Wrong Man (Episode 7): When young Ben Carmody is found murdered in an alleyway one snowy

night in Mydworth, all the evidence points to his best pal, Oliver. And though Oliver swears he is

innocent, judge and jury are quick to convict the young man. But at the eleventh hour, Harry and Kat

become involved, and aren’t convinced. With just days left before Oliver is to hang for the crime, they

investigate. With the clock ticking can they find the real culprit in time ... to save a life?

Miss Marple meets Oscar Wilde in this new series of cosy mysteries set in the

Harold Wilson, police sergeant in the picturesque Cotswolds village of Bunburry, loathes Alfie

McAlister. Alfie is handsome, popular, a self-made multimillionaire – and worst of all, he and his

friends Liz and Marge are much better than the police at catching villains. But Sergeant Wilson

DARE TO TRUST – Book 1

Hayden Millard has the world at his feet. He rules New York’s financial sector with an iron fist, and

closes million-dollar deals as easily as breathing. Until he meets his new assistant, Tori, and the

walls he’s spent years carefully building up around his heart suddenly threaten to come tumbling

down. When he realises she has no idea who he is, Hayden sees his chance.

He’s determined to get even with Tori, who was homecoming queen when they were at high

school together, and to pay her back for the suffering she caused him. But the more time he

spends with her, the clearer it becomes that they’ve both changed – and the feelings of dislike

from their schooldays are suddenly mingled with feelings Hayden has never felt before.

Laura Kneidl and Bianca Iosivoni are SPIEGEL Bestseller authors and superstars of the German

New Adult community. Combined, LYX has sold over 800,000 of their books.

In MIDNIGHT CHRONICLES the authors transport their readers to a world in which a group of

young hunters band together to fight evil – putting not only their lives at stake, but their hearts too.

Blood Magic: Since 19-year-old Cain completed her training as a Blood Huntress, it’s been her job

to protect the citizens of Edinburgh from dark creatures. She takes her work very seriously and

always obeys the rules of the Hunters – making her the exact opposite of Warden Prinslo. Since his

parents were attacked by vampires, the secretive Hunter has had only one aim: to find those

responsible and hold them to account, whatever the cost. The fact that he and Cain were once

comrades-in-arms who trusted one another implicitly is hard for them to believe these days. The

differences between them are too great, and the pain they suffered after hurting each other so badly

is still too raw.

But the return of Isaac the vampire king leaves Cain with no choice other than to work with Warden

again. And as they fight side by side in a life-or-death struggle, they can’t help wondering whether

perhaps this might be a second chance for them.

from Carter and it will take three years until they meet again.

K-pop stands for South Korean pop music, and is one of the biggest global phenomena of our time.

The music made by these boy and girl bands is breaking records worldwide. ‘Idol fiction’ (stories

about K-pop stars) is read by millions on Wattpad and other sites, and K-pop is currently a top trend

for the target group of female new adult readers.

Anne Pätzold’s Love-Nxt K-Pop trilogy tells the enchanting love story about an ordinary girl who falls

in love with a member of the biggest K-Pop boyband in the world.

WHEN WE HOPE: Jae-yong is a member of the biggest K-pop group in the world; Ella is a perfectly

ordinary student from Chicago. It should have been obvious to both of them that they could never

make a relationship work. Not only do they live thousands of miles and several time zones apart, but

the worlds they inhabit are completely different. And however close Ella and Jae-yong have grown

over the past few months, they now have to ask themselves whether their love is strong enough to

survive against all the odds.

of the biggest trends:

KEEPING SECRETS is the first book in a gripping new New Adult trilogy, a story about the pain of

letting go and the joy of new beginnings.

When young actor Tessa Thorn learns that her new film is set at Faerfax University – and

therefore in her home town – it’s already too late for her to back out. Because if Tessa doesn’t

want to endanger her career, she has to make sure the world never finds out what happened eight

years ago. Tessa is far from happy that budding journalist Cole Williams is going to be writing a

profile on her, which will involve him spending time on set during the shooting of the film. Cole’s

future depends on the article, however, and the deeper he digs into her past, the closer he comes

to a side of Tessa which she keeps carefully hidden from the world, and which Cole falls head

over heels in love with. But he also comes closer to uncovering her great secret, which could

destroy more than just their love for one another.

What if you have two hearts beating in your breast?

LIKE WATER IN YOUR HANDS is a first-person-voice novel by a Muslim woman writer. Love stories

by and for young Muslims have thousands of readers on WATTPAD: there is a target audience here,

but it is poorly served by the book market, which is why readers seek out stories online. With this

novel, LYX is addressing that target audience.

19-year-old Arwa has just moved to Vienna to study. But instead of making friends, she shuts herself

off and immerses herself in her art, avoiding contact with others as much as possible. All that

changes, however, when she meets Tariq. From the moment she sets eyes on him, he awakens

feelings in her that she’s never felt before. But Tariq, who is finding it increasingly difficult to reconcile

his family's traditional expectations with his desire for freedom, is struggling with his own demons.

And the closer Arwa and Tariq become, the clearer it is that their love will only stand a chance if they

can manage to face up to their past once and for all.

Amber has gone too far. After she is thrown out of university, her father’s contacts at UBC are her

firm back in Vancouver. The situation seems hopeless – until Emmett offers her his help. He is

What she doesn’t realise is that, as the two of them grow closer, she is putting not only Emmett’s

trust but also his whole family’s existence at risk.

are startlingly familiar to Hope. She has seen them before – behind a mask. What Hope doesn’t

Charlotte has the daily routines of her family of four firmly under control. She does have plans of her own,

but somehow she just never seems to get around to them. Then suddenly her mother Barbara turns up at

her door. When Charlotte was younger, Barbara abandoned the family and went to lead a free, wild life in

Lanzarote. Now, at 66, she has terminal lung cancer. And that’s not all: she also has no money and

nowhere to live. Reluctantly, Charlotte takes her mother in. It’s not long before Barbara plunges

Charlotte’s perfectly organised life into chaos. Charlotte barely has time to process her conflicting

emotions. On the one hand, she’d vowed never to let Barbara back into her life. On the other, she’s

shaken at the thought of her mother’s impending death.

When Charlotte catches her husband kissing a client at an office party, her carefully maintained

emotional armour starts to crumble. Panic-stricken, she flees the party. But Barbara follows her and takes

control of the situation. She takes Charlotte to the train station and they board the next train to Paris. In

this foreign environment, mother and daughter learn to relate to each other in a new way and to confront

the wounds of the past. And Charlotte realises she and her mother have much more in common than

she’d thought.

DIVIDED DREAMS

The Story of a German

Family

Berlin, 1992. Ingke's mother is hospitalized with leukemia and urgently needs a bone marrow donation.

To save her mother’s life, Ingke undergoes testing – although against her parents' will – and discovers

that her parents are not her parents. Only now, when the secret can no longer be kept, does Ingke learn

that she was adopted as an infant. Who are her real parents? Why did they give her away back then. And

what does it mean for her life today?

With the help of her cousin Rosa, Ingke embarks on a search that gradually reveals the story of her birth

family. They had opposed the GDR regime and, after a failed attempt to escape, lost their daughter to a

family more loyal to the government. As well, she learns more about the background of her adoptive

family, who own an estate in Brandenburg. After the invasion and occupation by the Russians, Emma,

the family matriarch, was able to save the estate from looting but only through great sacrifice and

ingenuity. In the following decades, she relied on clever adaptation and the use of the smallest possible

spaces to preserve it from total collectivization by the GDR’s Socialist Unity Party.

Suddenly, Ingke has two families vying for her. Her biological mother, who paid for her failed escape

attempt with a prison sentence, was ransomed by the FRG at some point, and has never been in touch

since. And her supposed parents, who provided her a loving and sheltered upbringing.

Ingke no longer knows where she belongs. But does she really have to make a decision?

THE FOUR TIDES

Members of the Kiessling family are just like the island they live on – as rough and secretive, and as

shrouded in mystery as Juist Island itself. When patriarch Eduard is scheduled to receive the Federal

Cross of Merit, everyone gathers at the family hotel. There is Eduard's wife, Adda, who hopes for a

harmonious celebration; their adult daughters Frauke, Theda, and Marijke, who are locked in conflict; and

then Adda's mother, Johanne. In the middle of the preparations, Helen from New Zealand bursts in,

claiming to be related to the Kiessling clan. But who is this young woman who so strikingly resembles

Adda?

Adda does not share her family's mistrust. She suspects that everything is interconnected and joins

Helen in exploring the mystery of her origins. And the key to the truth lies in the Hotel de Tiden, where it

all began. The fate of her mother, who set foot in the hotel as a chambermaid in the 1930s and then

THE VETERINARIAN –

Big Dreams (Vol.1)

BIG DREAMS is the introduction to a two-volume saga about two young women who are determined to live

their dreams and work as the first female veterinarians. The story plays out from 1906 to about 1931 in

Belgium, the Netherlands, and Berlin.

Two friends, one promise. In order to work as a veterinarian in Belgium in 1912, Nellie marries her childhood

friend, Philipp, who has taken over his father’s veterinary practice. However, she promises to set him free as

soon as he sees a chance to fulfill his own career aspirations as a concert violinist. When an opportunity

presents itself to him after World War I, he vanishes out of Nellie’s life from one day to the next. Meanwhile,

Nellie travels to Berlin, where women are finally being allowed to study veterinary medicine and take their

official exams.

Nellie receives help from Walter von Prednitz, a young German lieutenant. He fell in love with her when she

cared for his horse during the war. Yet after Philipp leaves, Nellie now realizes that she is pregnant.

Together with Walter's sister, Maria, who also studied veterinary medicine, Nellie tries to establish a

veterinary practice in 1920s Berlin. While Maria is an extremely talented and knowledgeable veterinarian,

dealing with people, especially the animals‘ owners, is less to her liking. When she falls in love with a Jewish

colleague, a number of people do not take kindly to the idea. Not only that, Maria is suddenly threatened with

a prison sentence for a different offense.

Two friends, one promise – a great saga about female veterinarians!

Gitta, Marlies and Cornelia are in their early fifties, old friends who are deeply dissatisfied with their

lives. So dissatisfied that they are happy to let their fellow human beings suffer. Gitta is happily

married but childless. Marlies has raised three children, but her husband has recently left her for a

30-year-old. And Cornelia has had a failed career as a singer. They’ve been looking forward to their

weekend on the island of Sylt for a long time. Now here they are at last. And on the first evening,

our three protagonists celebrate by pouring their hearts out and drinking lots of gin.

That night, something incredible happens: an angel appears to each of them. His message is clear.

If they don’t immediately change their lives, stop being so selfish and start seeing the good in

themselves and others, they will never be happy. From now on, he tells them, they are members of

the club of angels, whether they like it or not. And that means they have a duty to support other

people and help them ‘find their own little bit of happiness’. As a membership token, each of the

women is given a one-cent coin. The next morning, the friends are convinced they dreamt the whole

thing. The three one-cent coins on the living room table are just the remnants of a gin-fuelled poker

night. Aren’t they?

The novel alternates between five different narrative perspectives. As well as the three friends, we

hear from a hapless policeman who has never been loved, but who now falls in love with the lonely

Cornelia, and the prologue and the epilogue feature the nameless angel in conversation with his

boss. There is not a hint of mysticism in this novel, however! The angel is to be understood as an

ironic device, and serves as a catalyst for reflection and self-discovery in mid-life.

Paris around 1900. The city is in upheaval. Great changes are underway in art, politics, and society,

especially when it comes to the role of women. In DIE TÄNZERIN VOM MOULIN ROUGE (The

Dancer from the Moulin Rouge), Tanja Steinlechner recounts the stirring tale of a young woman

who fights her way out of poverty and achieves stardom at the Moulin Rouge. The novel is based on

the life of Louise Weber, aka La Goulue, the world famous queen of the cancan and chahut.

Paris in 1880. Louise Weber, the daughter of a laundress, is driven by an overpowering desire to

pursue her dancing talent and leave her background behind. Again and again, she sneaks away to

the bars and cafés of Montmartre. Supported by artists such as August Renoir and Toulouse

Lautrec, she rises to stardom at the Moulin Rouge and is the internationally celebrated queen of the

cancan. She quickly advances to become the establishment’s highest-paid performer.

Yet in her boundless fear of slipping back into poverty, she torpedoes her romantic love for her

friend Mimi and jeopardizes her friendship with her dance partner, Valentin. Both relationships break

up.

Years later, the one-time star dancer finds herself selling cigarettes and matches – not far from the

Moulin Rouge and yet unrecognized by her former audience. And it is there that she opens Mimi's

farewell letter, which she has always carried with her but never read. It is free of all reproach and full

of tender, longing words for her. Louise realizes she was truly loved. She understands her

memories in a new way and envisions herself in the glare of the lights, dancing with Mimi once

again.

A DREAM IN AUSTRALIA

South Australia in 1951. Jackson Hastings wants to break with the generations-old tradition of working

his ancestral farm. He is drawn to the city, where he uses an inheritance from his grandmother to

establish a department store. When he becomes engaged to Eloise, the daughter of a very wealthy art

dealer, he seems to have put farm life behind him once and for all.

But then Melody enters his life again. She has had a crush on him since childhood but spent the last two

years living in France with her uncle. Melody, however, is being courted by Ernie, the farm manager’s

son. He and Jackson grew up like brothers. While she was in France, Melody gave up hoping for

Jackson anyway, so she now turns to kind, good-natured Ernie, with whom she is genuinely in love.

Only two weeks before Jackson and Eloise's wedding, however, Melody and Jackson become

surprisingly close and spend a night together. As Jackson discovers the next morning, it was a mistake.

Yet that night has already changed all of their lives.

Sara soon suspects that Marjorie is trying to set her up with someone new, but she’s not interested. To

her surprise, however, a good-looking guy called Dean who she meets at one of the events actually turns

TWO SORTS OF HAPPINESS

After her divorce, Miriam has left the vale of tears behind her and is once again looking for love.

After all, summer holiday season is fast approaching and there’s nothing more depressing than

having to spend warm summer evenings on your own.

But Miriam’s search for a new man is not going well. And to make matters even more difficult, her

father loses his partner and moves in with Miriam and her son Bastian. Disaster! A teenage son, a

dependent father – how’s Miriam supposed to flirt under these conditions? The timing couldn’t be

worse, because Miriam’s neighbour has just got a lovely new lodger. And then there’s the Italian ice

cream man who’s almost too handsome to be true – and who disappears suddenly under

mysterious circumstances, leaving Miriam with the ice cream van.

After a disastrous family birthday party, Miriam decides it’s time to sack off her family and her

sensible persona for a while, and listen to her heart. She sets off on an adventure, determined to

get the ice cream van back to Italy and to find out once and for all who calls the shots when it

comes to love: head or heart, reason or intuition?

The trip turns into a disaster – partly because Miriam’s mother and sister suddenly decide they want

to come along too. But in the end, Miriam recognises that just because something is a failure,

doesn’t mean it was a mistake. For when she gets back from her trip, she realises that love is

sometimes much closer to home than you think.

Mari Thaler is used to keeping it together. She has just moved to Berlin, where she toils day and

night as an attorney in a commercial law firm, even though she doesn't actually enjoy arguing or

giving other people advice. She would much rather be invisible and invent stories.

But then she gets to know her landlady, Alexandra, as warm as she is bossy, and her boyfriend,

Tom, the most caring and talkative property manager imaginable. In addition to them, there‘s little

Toby for whom Mari invents half a petting zoo of imaginary animal friends at the next opportunity.

And then there is Leo, Alexandra's gruff brother and temporary handyman. At their first encounter,

he makes Mari tremble with a single touch – and her self-discipline begins to crumble.

SEX IS COOL, BUT CHRISTMAS

COMES MORE OFTEN

The children have left home. The nest is empty. And it’s not just birds who know what this feels like

– so do Anna and Morten, a married couple in their mid-forties who both find themselves feeling

frustrated after their kids move out of the family home. The sheen has come off, somehow. Not only

physically, but in their professional lives too. And in their relationship.

Then one of Morten’s colleagues asks if they want to spend the summer at his holiday home on a

tiny Danish island with no cinema, no cafés and no other attractions of any kind. Anna and Morten

suddenly decide that this quiet life is exactly what they need. A little peace and tranquillity will help

them get back in touch with what they really want.

But life on this idyllic, supposedly peaceful island proves more turbulent than they’d expected: the

house needs work to make it habitable, and the neighbours take up more of Anna and Morten’s time

than they would like. Anna ends up getting a temporary job on the neighbouring farm, which also

has a little petting zoo for holidaymakers, while Morten works on his lecture series.

To her surprise, Anna finds herself getting close to the good-looking vet who often visits the farm. Is

this the beginning of the end for her marriage, or the catalyst for a fresh start?

Luis and Nuria have been best friends since kindergarten. Nuria, the housekeeper’s daughter, grew

up with Luis and his brothers on the hacienda. For as long as she can remember, she’s had feelings

for Ramón, and has never seen Luis as anything more than a friend. When Ramón married Sophia,

it broke Nuria’s heart. It was so hard seeing the man she loved happy with someone else that she

decided to go abroad to complete her physiotherapy training. Now, back at the hacienda, she has to

admit that Ramón’s marriage seems to be anything but happy. Might this be a second chance for

their love?

At the same time, Luis returns to the hacienda after a tragic accident puts a sudden end to his

career as a pro kite surfer. Nuri cares for the badly injured and disillusioned Luis, and the more time

she spends working with him, the more she begins to see him in a new light. The once cocky youth

has become a serious professional sportsman who has just had his whole livelihood snatched away

from him, but who nevertheless fights valiantly to get back on his feet. Has she had her sights set

on the wrong brother all this time? Unfortunately, however, Luis doesn’t return her burgeoning

feelings – for he seems determined to set her up with his brother now that Ramón is divorced.

The Fuggerei in Augsburg is the world’s oldest social housing project still in existence. It was founded in 1521

by Jakob Fugger as a housing settlement for needy citizens of Augsburg. The settlement was intended for

craftsmen and day laborers who were threatened by poverty and could not support a household of their own,

for example, due to illness. They were allowed to continue earning a living and were supposed to move out

again once they recovered financially. The inhabitants of the Fuggerei retained almost luxurious privacy for

that period. In exchange, they were required to pay an annual rent of 1 Rhenish Guilder and offer prayer for

the founder three times a day.

Against this historical background, Peter Dempf spins an exciting story with strong characters, intrigue, and

adventure surrounding the famous Fugger family.

Augsburg in the 16th century. Eva and Joss fall on hard times through no fault of their own. The family has lost

everything in a very short time and is threatened with homelessness, when a trader friend draws their attention

to the new Fugger settlement. As Catholic citizens of Augsburg in distress through no fault of their own, they

meet both of the entrance requirements. Just like many others, they apply for one of the highly coveted

dwellings in the Fuggerei. And indeed, they are granted an apartment, although only because Eva states that

she and her husband are knowledgeable about the precious guaiac wood that is used in the Fuggerei to treat

syphilis, the so-called “French disease.”

Soon Eva discovers that the treatment has at best a delaying effect on the course of her patients' illness—and

that Jakob Fugger, against better knowledge, is adhering to this method due to his own economic interests.

Realizing this, however, puts her and her family in great danger.

Many people often don't know key facts about the pills, sprays, and drops they take on a regular

In addition, #ThePharmacist provides an unvarnished and, as a result, all the more exciting insight

CORONA VACCINES. RESCUE

OR RISK?

How They Work to Protect Us,

Their Side Effects, and the Hope

They Carry

The whole world is waiting for a vaccine against the corona virus. But can an agent save us if it has

been developed in a matter of months and is based on a barely tested technology? How do modern

vaccines work? How high is their level of protection? How strong are the side effects? And can we

rule out long-term damage?

Biologist Clemens Arvay takes a critical look at Corona vaccines. He provides sound scientific

answers to all of the important questions, so that in the end everyone can make their own decision:

should I get vaccinated or not?

Following the SPIEGEL Bestseller WE CAN DO BETTER, this is Clemens

RE-POWER

Staying Healthy, Slim and Happy

With the Help of Our Most

Important Organs

The gut, the thyroid gland, the adrenal glands and our hormones have a big impact on our health.

But stress, a poor diet or a lack of self-care can weaken organs and hormone systems, with serious

knock-on effects in terms of both physical and mental health. Low energy levels, for example, or a

weakened immune system, can be caused by hypothyroidism or a hormone imbalance. The

strategies in Re-Power will help you rebalance these systems, strengthening your whole body and

stabilising your mental health. External circumstances (diet, stress, a lack of self-care) can put great

strain on these organs, with serious consequences for physical and mental health.

This book features tailored care plans for every organ, put together by the two co-authors (both

doctors) based on the latest medical research. In the theoretical section you will find all the

fascinating background information you need about each organ, and a medical lifestyle

questionnaire to help every woman assess the state of her own health. There are also 5 to 10 tips

about how best to look after each organ (e.g. thyroid gland: avoid gluten, eat a diet rich in iron and

selenium, etc.) The practical section features recipes, yoga exercises and other physical exercises,

as well as information about useful food supplements, sustainability and the environment.

Re-Power can help every woman make changes to her life and feel healthier, younger, lighter and

more energetic.

For health, anti-ageing, beauty – and plenty of power

Dr. Matthias Marquardt

EXHAUSTED

Why We’re All Running Out

of Energy, and What We

Can Do About It

Every day, people come to Dr Matthias Marquardt’s practice seeking help with exhaustion. He sees

not only stressed-out executives but also mothers on maternity leave, employees, teachers and

small business owners. Exhaustion is widespread in our society. And people who go to the doctor

suffering from exhaustion tend to want to find out the cause of the problem and be prescribed the

appropriate medication for it.

But medicine alone can rarely provide an explanation for this crippling feeling. Even a physical

cause often has a deeper root: the increasing pace of our everyday lives, and the ever heavier

burden of responsibilities we have to shoulder. Matthias Marquardt speaks from personal

experience – he himself suffered from exhaustion for a long time. For nearly two years he

succumbed to infection after infection, and watched his immune system grow weaker and weaker.

But then he developed a comprehensive ‘power bank’ programme to replenish his energy reserves.

This book explores the widespread condition of exhaustion as a result of our society’s constantly

accelerating pace of life. It focuses on the day-to-day things that sap our energy, and illustrates

how, by getting more exercise, the right diet, the correct balance of nutrients like iron and vitamin

B12, enough sleep and a media detox, we can find our way back to increased vitality and better

health.

The book’s core message is this: exhaustion is a social phenomenon. And it’s not until we have

identified the social factors in our lives that cause us stress and fatigue that we, as individuals, will

be in a position to combat them effectively.

Why we’re all running out of energy – and what we can do about it

WHATEVER YOUR SIZE

You Can Never Have Too Much

Self-Confidence

Bum too big, breasts too small, hair too thin? Disregarding conventional ideals of beauty and

recognising their own attractiveness is something many women find difficult to do. In this book, two

different women tell of their lifelong struggles with their weight and self-image: Tanja Marfo, who

was always ‘too much’, and Caro Matzko, who almost starved herself to death as a young woman.

They describe their quest for emotional equilibrium and their own mental ‘perfect weight’ –

irrespective of their size.

This book helps readers adjust their own self-image in a more relaxed and joyful way. Eating

disorders have a role to play in helping us recognise deeper underlying problems and deal with their

causes more effectively. To recover from an eating disorder, the sufferer must first reprogramme

their psyche and learn to approach their problems in a different way.

Our bodies are the mirrors of our emotional lives. And the internal battles we fight with ourselves

can have a big impact on our size. The real battleground, then, is in the mind – and that can be

cured. For both women, self-acceptance and learning to love themselves was the key to their

recovery.

If you love yourself, you’ll always be your perfect weight

WILD PARADISE

Letting Nature Run Free and

Reaping Rich Rewards

Claudia Praxmayer and her husband bought an old farm in Germany’s Chiemgau region. The idea

was to create habitats where endangered species could find refuge on the huge property.

Praxmayer, a biologist, built deadwood hedges and terraced beds, let wildflower meadows grow

and ponds fill up – and life sprouted everywhere! Hedgehogs, birds, and bats moved in; wild bees

and other insects found plenty of food, and even peaceful coexistence in the vegetable patch

became possible (with small compromises).

Wild Paradise presents many small opportunities to contribute to species protection, and it invites

people to become more mindful by observing nature closely. Careful inspection of what can

supposedly be taken for granted brings new facets of the world to light – as expressed in the

author's motto: you can only recognize what is special if you are familiar with the ordinary.

This book shows how humans and nature hand in hand can achieve the happiest of gardens.

THE POWER OF OUR GENES

How to Stay Healthy by

Knowing Your Genetic Heritage

According to scientific estimates, every human being suffers from at least 2,000 genetic defects.

They cause our immune system to function less effectively, lead to osteoarthritis and osteoporosis,

impair our vision, can cause diabetes, and make us fat.

However, genetic predispositions do not have to represent an inescapable fate. Many genetic risk

factors can be rendered ineffective, often completely so, through proper preventative care, diet, and

appropriate lifestyle. In this book, readers learn how to take control of their health and manage their

well-being. Daniel Wallerstorfer explains how and why genetic errors that occurred long ago remain

prevalent to this day, and the health risks they still pose in our new environment. He explores the

reasons why a drug that is life-saving in one case can produce lethal side effects in a person with

different genes. And he describes why genetic disposition affects our weight: how it is that one

person loses weight by eating less fat, and another by avoiding sugar and carbohydrates.

All of the information in this book is drawn from recognized, published studies and reflects the

current status of scientific research.

THE GARDEN TIGER FLIES

ONLY AFTER MIDNIGHT

How We Can Rediscover and

Save Our Natural Treasures

Johanna Romberg moved to the country years ago out of love for nature. But for some time now

she has been missing familiar bird calls in her garden. Butterflies and bees are making themselves

scarce, and the beech trees in the forests are drying up. Are we losing the very foundation of our

lives?

In her search for answers, Johanna Romberg meets with a moth expert, an aquatic biologist, and an

owl conservationist. On a small scale, they are managing to stop the destruction of nature. The

author explores quarries, forests, and industrial wastelands together with them and learns that these

seemingly insignificant nature lovers are accomplishing amazing things. They are turning back time

and halting the devastation of nature by human beings.

These encounters open up worlds of knowledge about nature, flora, and fauna to the reader. They

demonstrate how inconceivably detailed and vibrant nature still is, and convey the indescribably

beautiful feeling that we will still be able to enjoy moths, yellow-bellied toads, and field crickets in a

hundred years to come.

DELIVER ME FROM EVIL My

Childhood in the Services of

Jehova’s Witnesses

In DELIVER ME FROM EVIL, Sophie Jones recounts growing up in one of Germany's best-known

and largest sects. She describes the pressure to be a perfect Christian and her struggle against

physical and mental abuse by her own mother.

After breaking down several times, Sophie realized that the community was doing nothing but harm

her. Once she came of legal age, she mustered all her courage and – in spite of manipulation,

isolation, and emotional blackmail – turned her back on the sect. It took time to find her way in the

normal world. Despite the loss of her previous social environment, she remained strong and never

went back. Today she wears a tattoo, goes to clubs, and has sex without being married. Counter to

her homophobic upbringing, she has a best friend who is gay. And best of all, she's happy.

In this book, author Sophie Jones tells the story of her journey from an insecure, suicidal teenager

to a confident, emancipated woman. She draws on her experience to serve as an encouraging role

model for others. This powerful memoir provides unimagined insight into the inner workings of a

fundamentalist Christian denomination.

My Childhood With a

Schizophrenic Mother

Little Nelly was only three when her father died. From then on she was alone with her mother. Yet

Nelly's mother was ill. She imposed nonsensical prohibitions and instilled the little girl with a fear of

infections and kidnappers. And she talked to Michael, who was not actually there but nevertheless

knew everything about them. Nelly's mother suffered from schizophrenia: not everything she saw

and heard was actually real.

Bravely, the little girl struggled through everyday situations. She endured the negative reactions of

her fellow human beings, patiently suffered under exclusion in kindergarten and school, and often

ensured that there was food on the table. When she was placed in a children's home, she was

happy about the clear structures, the good food, and the homework supervision. But even there,

something strange was going on.

While the entire setting of the story was threatening in the eyes of the young child, she also

experienced many tender, affectionate moments that gave her strength – and the assurance of

being loved.

KIMBA – How a Dog Took

Away My Fear of Life

From childhood, Natalie suffered from an anxiety disorder. She was afraid of large gatherings and

crowded buses, and didn’t go outside for months.

A difficult childhood was to blame. Her life unfolded on the fringes of society, with a mother who was

an alcoholic gambling addict and a father who was overwhelmed. Natalie has been on her own for

as long as she can remember. When she was 14, her mother died of cancer. Her father was unable

to cope with the stroke of fate and lapsed into depression. Natalie was placed in a supervised living

facility, where her sense of isolation and worthlessness increased. Even therapy didn’t help.

The situation only changed when a friend gave her a dog. Kimba, was a Rhodesian Ridgeback that

no one wanted because he was too small and too timid for the breed. They were two outcasts who

needed each other; the animal loved her unconditionally. From the dog, Natalie learned how to

struggle through, to live together, build trust, and behave in ways that give you enough strength to

master life.

For Kimba’s sake, Natalie confronted her fear. She went to the park in spite of it, which made her

brave and confident. Suddenly, she had the courage to take a risk. She applied for a job with an

animal breeder and . . . she was in luck. Now her days are full. "These days, I simply don't have
