Disclaimer

While great care was taken to verify the enclosed operations, they are not to be construed as official recommendations although each operation was verified with an actual unit. Since the GPS world is a rapidly changing one, the contents contained within may become obsolete and/or unsuitable at any time. Any action taken by the user as a result of any item herein is solely at the risk of the reader. I make no warranty as to the accuracy of the information, safety or suitability for use by anyone or for any purpose. My thanks to Steve for his totally unselfish generosity, Kathy for her endless patience and understanding, and Mark, a good friend who urged me on in the beginning. This paper is designed to expedite the learning curve for those of you who are just starting to use ForeFlight on the iPad, the most recent version of ForeFlight’s "Pilot's Guide to ForeFlight Mobile” contains a wealth of information and remains the final authority for operation. If the operation requires a ForeFlight Pro subscription it isn’t covered in this manual. A partial list of those operations is: Wt & Bal, Search and Rescue, and Profile View. Refer to the most recent version of ForeFlight’s “Pilots Guide”. We used v6.3.2 for the App which was the most current as of publishing date. John

Controls Pg i

This information is with regards to the program ForeFlight Mobile. It is not intended to be all encompassing. On the iPad there are only 3 controls the user is normally concerned about. One is the “Home” button, which is a round indentation on one of the short sides of the unit. The other control is the Sleep/Wake button which is also used to turn the iPad off or on. The Dock Connector, located under the Home Button, is mainly used to recharge the iPad. The iPad may be used either in landscape or portrait orientation. Multitasking gestures may be turned on or off by going to Settings, General, and then Multitasking Gestures. TAP means using one finger to tap on the screen. Doubled-TAP means two taps in rapid succession. (Zoom in on maps) 2-finger TAP means a single tap with two fingers. (Zoom out on maps) 2-finger PINCH together also can be used to zoom out. 2-finger PINCH apart can also be used to zoom in. Swipe means to place a finger on the desired line and move rapidly either left or right or up and down. To open an application or app, just tap on its icon on the home screen.

The Keyboard The Keyboard and its 3 different looks follow. The Normal Keyboard is shown below. The Numbers and Special Keyboards are on the next page.

Direct-To Operations

A. Using the Search Field. 1. TAP the Search Field to clear it and view the keyboard. 2. Type letter “D”, space, and the desired, destination identifier. 3. TAP “Search” on the keyboard. Note: In the NAV log the “D” is replaced with the present position coordinates and the destination will appear as typed. The route appears on the map as a magenta line. That means it is the route to the active waypoint (the chosen destination) which appears as a magenta dot.

B. Select any waypoint on the map.

Route”). If the waypoint is an airport the choice “Details” is also shown. TAP “Details” for the airport information to include Elevation, Coordinates, and Pattern Altitude. Choices for NOTAMs and TFRs as well as “Add to Favorites” are also available as well as Airport and Other Frequencies. (Swipe one finger up to view information on Runways, Procedures, Features, Solar Information, Service Information, Flight Tracking, and Cycle Information. Tabs across the bottom also appear for “METAR”, “TAF”, “Winds”, and “FBOs”.

C. After a course line has been established.

1. TOUCH and HOLD a finger on the active course line. After a moment a blue circle appears at the location of the finger.. 2. Drag until the finger is at the approximate desired location, and remove the finger from the screen. The above window appears with “Insert into Route” in place of “Add to Route”. Proceed with the above directions.

The upper-left corner of the window displays the Map Mode button which displays the type of map being shown and the chosen overlay(s). The choices are shown to the right. With Wind” chosen for the overlay the following symbols depict direction and speed of the wind. NOTE: To show up, the wind value must be normally transmitted over the internet. If the weather is strictly a broadcast on a radio frequency it may not appear. Think of the wind symbol as an arrow, pointing into the wind. The direction is referenced to True North. Wind is plotted in increments of 5 kts with the half barb equaling 5 kts, full length barb is 10 kts and a flag equals 50 kts. ForeFlight added color for easy interpretation as shown. *NOTE: “Hazard Advisor” is added when the subscription is ForeFlight Pro.

Appendix J Stratus Stratus

Pg 26

Stratus, as it pertains to ForeFlight Mobile, is a battery-powered, wire-free ADS-B WAAS receiver in the aircraft that receives weather products and aircraft position. It is manufactured by Appareo and available exclusively through Sporty’s. As you can see from the graphic below coverage does include the entire U.S. The number of weather products available from Stratus is different than XM weather. They include: NEXRAD, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, NOTAMs, Winds/Temperature Aloft, and Pilot Reports. Since the Stratus receiver was designed for ForeFlight Mobile, the operation is seamless. The high gain internal antenna all but eliminates the need for an external antenna although there is one available. There is only an ON/OFF button, 3 L.E.D. lights and a plug to charge the internal battery. Due to their frequency, the ADS-B works much like the VOR system. The antenna needs to be within a line-of-sight in order for the unit to receive. The optional external antenna will boost the signal so if you fly into fringe areas or no coverage areas it may be a good investment. For more information visit: sportys.com/stratus. NOTE: Baron Mobil Link/XM, when paired with a WxWorx data receiver, is another source for SM WX Satellite Weather. NOTE: ADS-B is now installed nationwide, the FAA said on April 14, 2014, although services won't be available at all air traffic facilities until 2019. "The installation of this radio network clears the way for air traffic controllers to begin using ADS-B to separate equipped aircraft nationwide," said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta in a statement. "It will also provide pilots flying aircraft equipped with the proper avionics with traffic information, weather data and other flight information." Of the 230 air traffic facilities across the country, 100 are currently using ADS-B to separate traffic, according to the FAA. All aircraft operating in controlled airspace must be equipped with ADS-B Out avionics that broadcast the plane's location by Jan. 1, 2020.
