A I went to soccer training the other night. Too few attended for two whole teams to play each other. If the coach formed the boys in groups of 2 or 3 three there was always one over. In groups of 4 and were 3 left over and in groups of 5 there were 4 left over. How many boys were at training?

B Twelve men stood on the shore in line as we rowed towards them. Every third man counting from the left, carried a spear. Every second man counting from the right, carried a club. How many men carried both a spear and a club?

C Under a tree in a paddock was an even number of cows. In the tree was an odd number of white parrots which was one more than the number of cows. I counted up all these creatures legs which totalled 25. How many parrots were there?

D Dad promised to buy me a computer when I am a quarter of his age. Dad is 44 and I am eight. How many years do I have to wait until I have my computer?

E Two large cubes are placed together on the floor. A painter sprays over all the faces he can see without moving them. How many faces remain unpainted when the cubes are broken apart?

F Make the largest and the smallest number possible using all of these numbers twice. Subtract the smaller from ther larger number. You cannot begin any number with zero. What is your answer?

About this book

Excellence in General Ability Year 4 is the FIRST of two books at primary level aimed at giving children practice in answering IQ (intelligence) or General Aptitude/Ability test questions. These type of tests are often set in entrance or scholarship examinations.

Each page contains a number of examples of the same kind. So when a child is confronted by a complete test containing many of these examples, he or she should feel more confident and become faster in arriving at an answer.

Speed is a vital factor in the actual examination as many questions are set but there is usually insufficient time for most children to finish. The total number correct is the important score.

If after checking with answers you still cannot understand what you have done wrong, you should ask a parent, teacher at school or tutor to explain why.

Some advice to those sitting for these tests are:

1 Do not spend too much time on any one question. Leave it, but place a cross next to it so you can come back to it when you have done easier ones that follow.

2 Do not leave out a question before time is up. If any you cannot answer offer multiple choice, take a guess. Certainly eliminate one or two of the alternatives which you are sure cannot be right.
