Leyla Sanyer Leyla Sanyer has just completed her 33rd year of teaching orchestra in Wisconsin Public Schools; the last 23 of them in the Oregon School District. Curriculum encourages student ownership with instruction in classical performance, composition, improvisation, chamber music and alternative styles (jazz, rock, bluegrass, Celtic). Music is studied in such a way as to encourage interdisciplinary understandings along with a love for the complexities and beauty of music itself. Among her former students are teachers at all levels, performers and lovers of music.    Ms. Sanyer is serving as president elect of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association and is the national 2004 recipient of the Elizabeth A.H. Green Award from the American String Teachers Association. She has also served as southcentral vice-president and orchestra chair of the WMEA and chair of the Comprehensive Musicianship Through Performance Committee. Leyla is also violinist in the Madison based Oakwood Chamber Players as well as the Camerata String Quartet.

+As music educators, what do we know about the relationship between human beings and music?

“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a

charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order and lends to all that is good

and just and beautiful.”

~ Plato

“Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.” ~ Ludwig van Beethoven

“Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a

boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art.” ~ Charlie Parker

My orchestra room provides a great space in which to play music and it really helps me to conduct the ensemble, teach lessons and prepare for concerts. The activities and lessons that I plan for the kids will give them a competitive edge over their peers from other schools.

Our orchestra room is a great environment for music study and the students are able to perfect their technique, work on performance outcomes and enjoy a collaborative atmosphere that will help them to discover the value of intrinsic motivation as they work toward long-term goals in the study of music.
