Dear Parents
Today in assembly, we looked at the UN’s 17 Global Goals that were set to try and improve living conditions for everyone globally and try stop the tide of destruction in the natural world. Many of the girls were already aware of the importance of making a change to save the environment – recycling being the most pertinent link to their own contributions. We watched a short clip on how plastic is affecting the world around us. Goals 12 (Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns)), 14 (Life below the water) and 15 (Life on land) are all going to be realistically achieved if we all try to do our bit. Being part of a global community makes all our individual little efforts, seem very worthwhile and meaningful. It is a very good message to reinforce at home – I am not giving up meat but I do recycle! I hope you enjoy a lovely weekend.

Earlier this week, FIV learned all about Hinduism, the world’s third most popular religion. Girls in FIV showed us their traditional outfits, which they wear to temple, for celebrations and festivals. Thank you Mrs Baker for organising such a fascinating morning and to Mrs Chudasama, Mrs Sachchithanantham and Mrs Shivakumaran for coming to help Form IV.
Eight of our talented Orchestral musicians attended an afternoon and early evening of rehearsals leading to a performance in front of their parents yes-terday. This year, St. John’s introduced singing into the mix and the final ren-dition of “When I grow up” from the musical “Matilda” was truly exciting. The Orchestra worked on a march from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Yeomen of the Guards” and the James Bond theme as well as “Goldfinger”. The girls be-haved impeccably, as always, and mixed with 130 pupils from nine different schools. From Form VI: Lucie Hammond, Shriya Littlebury, Ramya Sach-chithanantham, Maya Tesic-O'Dwyer and from Form V: Gracie Brough,
Damilola Lewis, Maeve Russell and Maya Shah.
Well done girls, it was a pleasure to accompany you. Mrs Wilson

Yesterday, Forms III, IV, V and VI were treated to a fantastic workshop session using both drums and percussion instruments to create the “Samba” sound from Brazil. The Education Group’s facilitator, Callum, led the girls in warm-up exercises, discussion about the basic elements of the musical genre and then it was straight in with the playing! Who knew that a triangle could be held between the thumb and fingers, struck with a beater and dampened with the thumb so percussively? That the snare drum, tambourine and tambour could be used as equivalents for the caxia, pandeiro and tambourim and that our two metallic agogo (pronounced a go (as in off) go) are actually used in Brazil! Each instrument was given its own ostinato and off they went. A really wonderful experience for all. Mrs Wilson
Very well done to Hannah Hassan, FIV, who was awarded her Times Tables Badge this week.
