Brothers all;

Brothers of the Valley of Dallas, I bring you year end greetings and wishes from your Valley staff. 2015 has seen great changes taking shape in our Valley: we have lost beloved Brothers and welcomed a larger number of new Masters of the Royal Secret during this year – the Valley continues. This year has brought us new DSR clubs, different activities, and new members stepping up and becoming involved in committees, degree teams, and working in the Valley.

Our Membership committees, Arm & Arm, Brother to Brother, continue to gain momentum and delivering the Rite message to all the Masonic Brotherhood. During this past year, we completed our migration to the latest state of the art sound system, and this past summer we completed the change over to our new LED Lighting system. Please remember that 99% of these efforts were led by members of the various crews. Stage, Sound, Lighting crews, and officers of the Valley all pitched in to get this accomplished. I know many of you join me in thanking the lighting committee for the new advanced systems. It has expanded our view-ing of the magnificent Dallas stage sets. These new systems bring out colors many of us never knew were possible. We have seen wondrous elements of our sets ‘come to life’ in new ways and thus enlarging our degree work experience.

I do wish to express my gratitude to all the members of the Dallas Valley for their continued support this past year by getting involved and helping our Valley. This is the true meaning of Fraternity and I thank each of you for that support.

In 2016, there is no time to rest on our past successes and completions. The new year brings a full calendar of events already scheduled, the groundwork has been completed, and the programs are underway. Make sure your email is correct, as that is our most efficient method to communicate to our membership. If you have not done so, please check out our website calendar feature, it is full of information. Also we place the yearly calendar of events on most monthly stated meeting programs – make sure you take a copy home.

ScottiSh Rite MaSonS eStabliShing alaMo MeMoRial Day

DALLAS, TEXAS - The Texas Scottish Rite Masons are establishing an “Alamo Memorial Day” and are seeking historical and other organizations and individuals to join its efforts to obtain official state recognition for March 6th (the day the last Alamo defenders died) for the day. The top Scottish Rite Mason in Texas, M. Douglas Adkins of Dallas, said that the Alamo properly has been designated an official Texas shrine and a United Nations’ landmark, but there is no official day for remembrance of the over 180 men who died there fighting for their freedom and our future. Adkins said he believes it is particularly appropriate for the Texas Scottish Rite Masons to initiate these efforts inasmuch as most of the leaders of the Alamo defenders were Masons, including William Barret Travis, Jim Bowie, David Crockett, James Butler Bonham, and Almaron Dickinson. The Texas defenders of the Alamo, he said, were no less brave than the 300 Spartans who died with everlasting fame at Thermopylae over two thousand years ago. The Dallas Scottish Rite organization established a “Texas Our Texas” day several years ago to honor and celebrate our Texas history. Adkins said these dinner celebrations are open to everyone and have included a play, speakers on Texas history, as well as displays of historical artifacts from the Texas State Archives and Museum, the Dallas Historical Society, the Texas Civil War Museum, and private collectors. Texas already has numerous official holidays and recognition days established by the Texas Legislature, including Texas Flag Day, Texas First Responders Day, American Indian Heritage Day, Confederate Heroes Day, Influenza Awareness Day, and Texas Arbor Day. An Alamo Memorial Day to honor and remember the Alamo defenders is long overdue, said Adkins.

It is expected that the day will regularly be observed by appropriate ceremonies and activities in the public schools and other places to properly commemorate and honor the bravery and sacrifice of the Alamo defenders. Adkins said we need to make sure that bravery and patriotism don’t go out of fashion in Texas. The Texas Historical Foundation and the Alamo Defenders Descendants Association are supporting our initiative for Alamo Memorial Day, and we will be asking our approximately 20,000 Scottish Rite Masons to do so, Adkins said. Other organizations wishing to join or support the Texas Scottish Rite in this effort should contact Marshall Doke, Chairman of the Texas Scottish Rite History Committee, at [email protected].

MASTER CRAFTSMAN: SCOTTISH RITE PHILOSOPHY

As I finish up exam no. 27, address and seal the envelope, and prepare to mail it off to Supreme Council, I want to take a moment to thank Bro. Arturo de Hoyos and the rest of the staff in the Southern Jurisdiction for their fine efforts on the new-est Master Craftsman Program; Scottish Rite Philosophy. I realize that while I have a good deal of the quizzes behind me I am staring the most challenging quiz straight in the eye. I accept the challenge.People join the Scottish Rite for many different reasons. Some join to participate in our incredible philanthropic work. Some join because the Scottish Rite has been a time honored tradition in their family and participation in the Rite weaves them indelibly into the fabric of time. Some, like me, join because they thirst for knowledge and esoteric meaning of life.I have always been a reader, but admit that one of the most daunting tasks facing any Brother in the Southern Jurisdiction is perusing the pages of Morals and Dogma. For many years part of the family tradition we spoke to earlier was using a copy of Pike’s lofty work as a doorstop. Bro. Art’s annotated edition of this spiritual opus, in conjunction with the new Master Craftsman program, sets a Mason on his toes and clears the way for him to traverse this path.Don’t be mistaken, the words are the same; not a single idea has been paraphrased, nor a single paragraph summarized for the readers convenience. What Bro. Arturo has done is added clarity to the original manuscript through his own diligent research. Thousands of footnotes elevate one’s understanding, not just of what Bro. Pike was trying to convey in Morals and Dogma, but also of the sources Bro. Pike used when compiling the notes that helped shape each degree.Scottish Rite Philosophy compliments this new annotated edition of Morals and Dogma and assists the reader in finally digesting Pike’s message. By incentivizing the student through a graded sense of accomplishment, the quizzes allow and encourage the reader to apply the moral lessons of each degree to his own life. What good are all these degrees if we don’t have a deep understanding of the lessons being taught us, and how they are applicable to our own lives? For new Scottish Rite Masons, and for Brethren who have long labored in our quarries, but who are just starting out on the Master Craftsman journey, understand that must first complete Master Craftsman: History and Ritual before delving into Scottish Rite Philosophy. It is highly recommended that you start at the beginning with Master Craftsman: Symbolic Lodge. This 1st course in the series examines Esoterika and the symbolism of the Blue Lodge degrees. If you have any questions please contact me at [email protected] or call direct at 214.901.0223

Grand MasterM\W\Wendell Paul Miller, 33o

Born on August 26, 1943 in Durant, Oklahoma; his education beginning in Kenefic, Oklahoma, and concluding in Caddo, Oklahoma public schools would lead one to believe that Grand Master Miller might yet have a touch of “Okie” in his system even after migrating to Texas. Following completion of his high school education, Wendell made several efforts to find his niche from which he might plan his lifetime career. It was in 1963 while working with geophysical service group in New Mexico that he heard of a possible job opportunity with the Chicago Bridge and Iron firm located at Port Isabel in a place called Texas. It was while in the process of making new friends at his new job that someone suggested that Wendell might consider looking into the possibility of building a career in law enforcement which had its beginning in November, 1964 with his employment by the Dallas Police Department where he remained until 1967. It was while with the Dallas Police Department that Wendell decided to enlist in the United States Army Reserve where he served for twenty nine years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before his retirement in 1993.

While in the midst of planning his career Wendell decided it was time to give serious thought about who might share the future with him. His thoughts continued to take him back to his school years in Oklahoma where a very attractive girl by the name of Billie Wells was one of his classmates. Wendell had never dated her, but the more he thought about it, the more he wondered why he had waited so long. We have no record indicating whether it was Wendell’s persuasive nature or Billie’s willingness to give it a try, but their lives and ambitions were united by their marriage on August 5, 1967 and they are still committed to each other – sharing life together and supportive of each other in both joint and individual ventures. It would naturally follow that although he and Billie had recently married to start their lives together, he was experiencing the challenges of his position with the Dallas Police Department being fulfillment of his expectations for a lifetime career in the field of law enforcement. That question was answered by his acceptance by the Texas Department of Public Safety where he began serving in various capacities, first as a Trooper from 1967 until 1986 when he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, serving as such until his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant in 1991, elevated to the rank of Captain in 1993 and promoted to the rank of Major in 1996 where he served with distinction until his retirement in 2003. Throughout those years in which he has served the State of Texas he and Billie have, at one time or another lived in Dallas, Houston. Midland, Austin and Forney where they retired, later settling in McKinney where they now reside.Preparation for his chosen career included his attendance at Southeastern State University in Durant, Oklahoma and the School of Police Staff and Command, Northwestern University Traffic Institute, Evanston, Illinois. Throughout his thirty nine years of service to the citizens of Texas in his chosen field of law enforcement, Wendell has of-ten received special recognition for his exemplary service in connection with his duties. Such recognition has included the C.H. Cheshire Award, given in recognition of his significant contribution to safety in commercial transportation; Director of Safety Professionals Certification (an award shared by less than one hundred people in the State of Texas); Certified Fire Arms Instructor; promoted and emphasized the Trooper Challenge Program, a program that has been a model for other states participating in the Challenge competition, and Law Enforcement Instructor. Continuing a longstanding family tradition Wendell was initiated, passed and raised in James Ladd Burgess Lodge No. 1305 in Dallas in 1970 to continue that tradition of masons within the family. When he and Billie relocated to Forney, he affiliated with Brooklyn Lodge No. 386 of that city where he served as Worshipful Master during the 1999-2000 Masonic Year. His plural endowed lodge memberships include Claud L. Austin Lodge No. 1450 in Dallas where he served as Wor-shipful Master in 2005-2006 Masonic Year, Charter Member and Past Master of reconstituted Scyene Lodge No. 295 in Quinlan in 2004-2005 Masonic Year, Duck Creek Lodge No. 1419 in Garland and Artesia Lodge No. 406 in Terrell. True to his Oklahoma heritage, Wendell is also a plural member of Caddo Lodge No, 3 in Caddo, Oklahoma. His many activities, accomplishments and contributions to Masonry within the lodges in which he became active, it would

seem logical that such be noted by the leadership of Grand Lodge. Such was the case in mid-2000 when incoming GrandMaster David B. Dibrell tapped Wendell to serve under his appointment as District Deputy Grand Master in Masonic District 13 during the 2000-2001 Grand Lodge Year. Also, beginning in 2000 through 2006 he served as Coordinator of the Together against Drug Abuse program; on the Grand Master’s Planning Committee 2000-2002; a term as a member of the Grievance and Appeals Committee beginning in 2003; area Conference Coordinator for several years and as District Instructor in District 13 for several years. It was at the Grand Lodge session held in December, 2013 that the Masons of Texas recognized the commitment of Wendell Miller to the interests of the Grand Lodge and elected him to the office of Grand Junior Warden at that time. Since then he has scaled the ladder of leadership of Texas Masonry to assume the purple of the fraternity, being installed as Most Wor-shipful Grand Master on December 5, 2015.Typical of most Masons who complete the first three degrees, Wendell went in search of additional Masonic Light to round out his Masonic experience. He entered the York Rite of Freemasonry by receiving the degrees of Royal Arch Chapter in Dallas Chapter No. 47, Royal Arch Masons, Dallas Council of Royal and Select Masters in Dallas Council No. 18, Royal and Select Masters and the Commandery Orders being received in Dallas Commandery No. 6. He received the 4th through the 32nd Scottish Rite Degrees in the Dallas Valley in 1970, and was installed as Commander of the Council of Kadosh in 2005 was Elevated to the Rank and Decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honour in 1999 and in 2005 was elevated by the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry to the rank of 33rd Degree Inspector General Honorary. He served as Chairman of the Valley of Dallas under appointment of the Sovereign Grand Inspector General of Texas from October, 2007 until January, 2010. His membership in other Masonic related organizations requiring Masonic membership includes: Hella Shrine Temple, Saint Mark’s Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine. Texas College Societas Rosicruciana, Royal Order of Scotland, National Sojourners (President -2006)(Presidential Citation – 2007), Heroes of 76 ( Commander 2007), Allied Masonic Degrees, Rose of Sharon Knight Masons, St. Thomas of Acon and Order of the Eastern Star Forney -Terrell Chapter No 557, Past Patron.

MASON VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

This program is not an organization or entity of any kind. It is merely a method for individual Masons to volunteer their services and be “matched” with charities and civic organizations needing their services. The program is sponsored and supported by the Scottish Rite, but participating Masons volunteer individually.

The distinctive Mason Volunteer referee shirts are easily recognizable at public events (such as parades, golf tournaments, and charity programs), and the Volunteers show clearly what Masons do and who we are.

James Nyfeler, Sr., Lawrence Sweeney, Marshall Doke, Jr., & Jeffrey Haven

Most people are not familiar with Freemasonry. How can we help? As we volunteer at parades, golf tournaments, and charity fund-raising dinners, etc., we will be identified to the public as “Masons.” This will partially answer the questions of “who are Masons and what do they do?” People don’t know! Our referee shirts not only attract attention, they effectively demand attention. We have experienced that!

Can you imagine the effect of 50 Masons wearing these referee shirts at a downtown Dallas parade? There is a national trend in volunteerism, particularly by younger men. Masonry can provide excellent opportunities. How can Masons volunteer to the outside world? It would be difficult (or impossible) for individual lodges to do this. But, individually, Masons can participate in a coordinated effort that puts Masonry’s best foot forward.

There is no commitment of time or activity required to join. You can do as much or as little as your schedule permits. The only requirement is to purchase your referee shirt ($30.00) and cap ($10.00) (if you want one).

For applications, contact Marshall Doke @ [email protected]
