1st Decision!!!

• What topic should you

choose for a historyfair project???



You’ll know you’ve chosen theright topic when…

• You’re quickly excited about the topic andare eager to learn more.

• There’s a lot of reliable information aboutthe topic.

• You can already see how the topic meets

the theme.• You can already imagine ways to present

the information you’re finding.





3rd Decision:

What “category” will youuse to present your project?

Exhibit? Performance? Documentary?



Or maybe a…

• Web page?• Historical Paper?



An EXHIBIT may be done individually or

with a group

• An exhibit is much like a small“museum.”

• You must prove why your topic

is important & how it meets the

theme through pictures &carefully chosen statements.

• You must comply with the size

limit & the word limit.

• Your project will also include a500-word process paper.



A Performance may be done

individually or in a group.• In a performance YOU

become the historicalcharacters, acting out andexplaining the importance of

your topic.• You must include accurate

facts, including people,places, and dates.

• You must provide historical“context.”

• You must comply with the timelimits and include a 500-wordprocess paper.



A Documentary may be done

individually or with a group.• A documentary is like the

films you see on theHistory Channel.

• You create a movie to

present your topic.• You must comply with the

time and other limits.

• You must produce ityourself, including thenarration.

• It also has a 500-wordprocess paper.



A Historical Paper is an

individual project• A historical paper is the most

traditional form of presentinghistorical research.

• You must prove through writing how

your topic is important to history.• The paper’s body must have 1,500 -

2,500 words.

• It must follow formal research

styles, including internaldocumentation; MLA is a preferredstyle.

• The paper must conclude with anannotated bibliography.



A Web page may be done

individually or in a group• A web page is the most

interactive category.

• It must show your ability to

use the NHD website

technology.

• It must also clearly showcase

your historical topic.

• It is limited in space, words,

and must engage the viewer.

• It too, includes a 500-word

process paper.



Now, you’re ready to begin

your serious research!

*Remember to have a good balance.

*books, *internet articles,*newspapers, *magazines, *letters,

*journals, *interviews, *telephone calls,

maps, photos, and more.





While researching, thinkproductively!!

your final project?

• What facts help youmeet the NHD theme?



Planning the project:

• Now, put all your

hard work together!

• Transfer all that

terrific knowledge

from your “head” to a

finished product for

others to see.

• Choose the words whichwill convey a clear andmeaningful picture.

• Make comparisons in a

way your audience willunderstand what youmean.

Plan what you will“communicate”



Plan what you want yourproject to “look” like:

• Use your imagination to think of many

creative and effective ways you can

present your project.

• Think of all the materials and equipment

you will need.

• What steps will you need to take?

• Plan for any “problems” and how to

resolve them.

The 500-word Process Paper

will include…• How you chose your topic.

• How you conducted your research.

• How you selected your presentation

category.• How you created your project.

• How your project relates to the history fair

theme• It will conclude with an annotated

bibliography.



The bibliography is a majoraspect of your project!

• As all historians do, you must

document ALL your sources



The Bibliography will

accompany EVERY project• The Bibliography lists all

the sources you use to

create your project.

• Each source must be

“annotated.” This is a

statement that explains

what information it

contains, how it was

used, and its importanceto the project.

• It will be separated intoPrimary and SecondarySources.

• REMEMBER - Primary sources are the eye-witnesses or participants.

• REMEMBER - Secondary sources were NOT there buthave researched the topic.



What will you tell youraudience and the judges?

• “SHOW” them why you areso excited about your project.

• This is your chance toshare more interestingfacts!

• YOU ARE THE EXPERT!• “WOW” them with whatyou know.
