An Argentine agronomist posed the question fifteen years ago on a vineyard tour of the French countryside. If the climate and soil conditions in that terroir francés were so similar to his native land in Argentina, why couldn’t he produce high-quality wines at home?
Who says you have to plant vines at Latitude 33 (Mendoza) when Latitude 39 slices through some of the Mediterranean’s finest regions as well as the southern province of Buenos Aires? The town called Médanos (Dunes) resides in a unique coastal environment with sandy soils nestled between the fertile Pampas and the rugged Patagonia.
This is where the agronomist’s vision became a full-bodied reality.
The first vines were planted in December 2000 and the chosen varietals were Cabernet, Malbec, Tannat, Syrah, Tempranillo, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Today, there are a total of 25 hectares (61.7 acres) planted including Malbec (9 has.), Cabernet Sauvignon (4 has.), Merlot (4 has.), Tannat (4 has.), Chardonnay (2 has.) and Sauvignon Blanc (2 has.). The entire vineyard has a drip irrigation system divided into 3 sectors.
The winery is a beautiful 504 m2 (5,425 square foot) brick facility featuring a large tank room with 18 stainless steel tanks and an intimate wine tasting room. Other facilities include a laboratory, an office, a basement for barrel-aging, a stable, a caretaker’s home, two bathrooms for personnel, and two large concrete work platforms.
The wine cellar is a 115 m2 (1,237 sf) facility built under one of the many dunes for which this charming coastal region is named. The cellar has a circular main room which is 8 meters (26 feet) wide with a sweeping roof in the form of a cupola, 2 lockable cells for bottle storage, and a circular stairwell which allows guests to rise and emerge through the top of the dune. This area was envisioned as a unique space which could serve as a link between the cellar and future construction like a boutique property or gourmet restaurant.
The winery is offered turnkey furnished with all equipment including 18 tanks with 150,000-liter capacity, cold water distribution network to all thanks, a Della Toffola wine press (5,000 kg./hour), conveyer belt, compressors, bins, washers, bottling and labeling equipment.
