Title : Calculation of power required to pump the water at the given height and at the given flow rate.
This can be explained with the following example:
Given data :
The height at which the water is required = 300 feet.
The flow rate of water required = 200 liters per minute.
Calculate the HP rating of the motor required for the pump.
Power in Kg meter per second = Pressure in Kg per square meters x Flow in cubic meters per second
For water column of 300 feet, the static head in Kg per square-meters = Height in meters x Density of the liquid to be pumped, in Kg per cubic meters for water
= ( 300 x 0.305 ) x ( 1000 )
= 91500 Kg per square-meters
The flow in cubic meters per second = 200 ̧ 1000 60 = 3.33 1000 Hence the power = 91500 x .3.33 1000 = 300.5 Kg meters per second.
This power in Kg meters per second is to be converted into HP, hence the power in HP = 300.5 x .013 = 3.97
To accommodate for hydraulic energy loss, losses in pump and motor we can take the rating of motor about two and half times the rating as calculated above.
Hence the power rating of the motor will be 10 HP

“ You question, we answer ”
Question:In a captive power plant what will be the effect on power factor in captive power plant? Recommended power factor by the alternator supplier is 0.8. Is it good to increase up to unity?
Answer:If you are operating independently without synchronizing with the grid you can operate the alternator to a higher lagging power factor taking care of the following:Ÿ Do not go for leading power factor which will produce High Voltage and affect the
stability of the DG.Ÿ Limit the current to the rated current of alternator.Ÿ More importantly the manufacturers specify the PF of 0.8 for alternator and the Engine
is designed to take care of the Active load. For example if the Alternator is 100 kVA it will impose an active load of 80 kW ( efficiencies are not taken into account) and the engine is designed for that 80 kW load. If you increase the PF to 0.9 the load imposed on the engine is 90 kW. This only you have to take care, other wise the engine will get overloaded leading to other operational problems
