Getting it Backwards

In today’s scripture, we hear about a time when Paul found himself in

Athens, Greece surrounded by people who had spent their lives worship-

ping a bunch of different gods – all of whom were represented by statues.

Simply put, they had made their own gods and worshipped them.

They had it backwards. People do not make gods. God makes people.

Knowing that God made us is the fi rst thing we need to know. Then, we

can understand that God loves us like children and that we need him like

a child needs a parent.

Soul Food: A Word from Peter

Galileo On Trial

In the year 1633, the astronomer Galileo was put on trial for heresy by the Roman Catholic Church. Galileo believed that the earth revolved around the sun, which contradicted the teachings of the church.

Galileo was found guilty. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest until his death in 1642. It wasn’t until 1992 that the Roman Catholic Church fi nally acknowledged the “errors” of Galileo’s judges.

For many, the trial of Galileo led to a gradual divorce between science and marriage. Many people claim the Christian faith is unscientifi c - that you can-not be a Christian and a scientist.

Of course, that is false. Galileo was a man of deep faith and a devout Chris-tian all of his life. Galileo did not advocate a divorce of faith and science but instead, he saw a healthy marriage between the two. “God is known by nature in his works, and by doctrine in this revealed word,” he wrote.

Many of the greatest scientists in history have been Christians. Like Galileo, the study of science has not destroyed their faith. Instead, it has drawn them closer to God and belief in a Creator.

Part-Time Custodian NeededAre you a personable, independent worker looking for an opportunity to put your skills to good use? LPC is looking for a self-starter who can perform minor repairs, custodial cleaning, and has a good eye for spotting areas in need of TLC. You must be able to climb a ladder, lift 30 lbs. and have a posi-tive attitude. The job is 21 hours per week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a paid lunchbreak. In addition, you may be asked to work two Saturdays per year at an hourly rate. If you are interested in fi nd-ing out more, please contact Sherry Showalter at 513-932-2751 or [email protected].

Coming AlongsideAll women in the church are invited to join together Tuesday, October 15 at noon for friendship and lunch at Johnny Chan’s in Montgomery; 11296 Mont-gomery Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45249. Please RSVP by Sunday, October 13 to Sue Baumann at 513-228-0881 or [email protected].

Horizons at LPCOur next LPC rotation is just one week away and we need your help. Beginning Sunday October 20, we will host homeless families for one week right here at LPC. It is a very large undertaking and we need help. Our main needs are Overnight crews and also Evening Hosts. Overnights require two people who come in at 8:30 p.m., sleep on an LPC provided bed and depart at 7 a.m. the next morning. Evening Hosts requires one person to arrive at LPC by 5:30 p.m. and help setup and serve the meal and to monitor the evening. Evening Hosts depart at 8:30 p.m. when the Overnight folks arrive. If you can assist in any way with an Overnight position (which is our greatest need) or an evening host please, contact Rob McLagan at 513-478-4516 or see sign up sheets available on the IHN bulletin board located by the Nursery for overnight hosts, evening hosts or pantry items needed.

We Want to Hear from You

Do you have any dreams, ideas or ques-tions to share with our church leadership? We invite you to join us today at 10 a.m. in the Sanctuary for a Fireside Chat. Many of our elders will be available to hear your thoughts and answer your questions.

Advent Worship Leading Opportunities for Children

Isaiah prophesied about the birth of Jesus by saying, “and a little child shall

lead them.” Throughout the month of December, the children of LPC will have

the opportunity to lead us in worship to remind us of this important truth each

week. To sign up your child or grandchild, please visit the bulletin board outside

the Explore Room (301). Opportunities for all ages (even the littlest ones!) are

available and we hope that every child who is a part of our community will

participate in a way that fi ts his or her age, interests, and abilities.

LPC Golf Tournament October 19

We invite you to join us Saturday, October 19 at Majestic Springs golf course in Wilm-ington, OH. All of the money we raise will go towards helping to build the school in Kenya, East Africa. We need to know how many golfers are coming, so please fi ll out the sign-up sheet below and place it in the collection plate. Cost is $50 and you can pay at the golf course the day of the tournament. Golfers need to arrive by 9:30 a.m.

and the long-term ramifi cations of disasters. DRT is a faith-based organization

that coordinates volunteers and resources from local churches, businesses, and

communities to help people impacted by natural disasters. If you are interested

in learning more about how you can join our team, please begin by completing

our brief online survey. Sign-up at lebanonpresbyterian.org/ministries/drt

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
