Cornwall is famous for its mining heritage, many men and children have lost their lives to the perilous mines, the high price of tin often being the reason why so many were willing to risk everything. Botallack (pictured on the front) is situated between St Just and Pendeen, it extends for about 400 meters under the Atlantic Ocean and its deepest shaft is about 500 meters below sea level. Wilkie Collins the novelist once wrote a frightening account of his descent down into the mine in 1850, he said that he could hear the roar of the surf above his head. In 1846 the chain that pulled the mine gig broke, causing eight men and a boy to plummet to their deaths down the shaft. Lots of miners developed serious health conditions due to the mines environment, for example Bronchitis, TB and rheumatism.
Along the coast from the Botallack mine is a town called Hayle and Godrevey lies just after. Godrevy Lighthouse was built in 1859, it is said to have inspired Virginia Woolf to write her book ‘To the Lighthouse,’ she notes the lighthouse is in the Hebrides, but the visitor book contains her signature.
On the other coast lies the town of Penzance, birthplace to Maria Branwell mother of the three famous Bronte Sisters. When the area between Penzance and Mariazion was marsh land, people tried to avoid it because of a ghostly apparition called the ‘White Lady’. She would jump on to an eerie horse that already had a rider and disappear into the night. No one knows her reasons for haunting the area.
Penwith encompasses the most westerly point in England. It reaches from Land’s End to Gwithian, meaning that three of its sides are surrounded by water; making it perfect for piracy and smugglers in days gone by.

You can’t visit Cornwall without sampling a pasty, but now you can have a go at creating your own at home!
This recipe is for 4 good sized Cornish Pasties
METHOD1. Pastry
• 500 gms strong bread flour (It is important to use a stronger flour than normal as you need the extra strength in the gluten to produce strong pliable pastry).
• 120 gms white shortening
• 25 gms cake margarine
• 5 gms salt
• 175 gms cold water
Mix fat lightly into flour until it resembles breadcrumbs.
Add water and beat in a food mixer until pastry clears and becomes elastic. This will take longer than normal pastry but it gives the pastry the strength that is needed to hold the filling and retain a good shape.
Leave to rest for 3 hours in a refrigerator, this is a very important stage as it is almost impossible to roll and shape the pastry when fresh.
2. Filling
• 450 gms good quality beef eg. skirt
• 450 gms potato
• 250 gms Swede
• 200 gms onion
• Salt & pepper to taste (2/1 ratio)
Clotted cream or butter (optional)
Chop the above finely then add to the rolled out circles of pastry raw. Layer the vegetables and meat adding plenty of seasoning. Put your dollop of cream or a knob of butter on top. Then bring the pastry around and crimp together. Try practicing on a potato first or just flatten like a turnover and mark with a fork. Crimping is the secret to a true Cornish pasty but it really has to be taught it is almost impossible to describe.
cornish PastyBake yourself a
• Always use a firm waxy potato such as Maris pier or Wilja.
• Put in plenty of seasoning.
• Ensure that all your veg is freshly prepared
• Never attempt to add carrot, this is sacrilege!
Use a good cut of BEEF eg. skirt. This is the underside of the belly of the animal. Its juice produces wonderful gravy, has no fat or gristle and cooks in the same amount of time as the raw vegetables.
Butter or cream gives the pasty that extra richness.
This recipe shows how you can have a go at making a pasty yourself at home. Cornish pasties were awarded the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in 2011 and need to be made to the following specifications.
A genuine Cornish pasty has a distinctive ‘D’ shape and is crimped on one side, never on top. The texture of the filling is chunky, made up of uncooked minced
or roughly cut chunks of beef (not less than 12.5%), swede, potato, onion with a light seasoning. The pastry casing is golden in colour, savoury, glazed with milk or egg and robust enough to retain its shape throughout the cooking and cooling process without splitting or cracking. The pasty is slow-baked and no artificial flavourings or additives must be used. And, perhaps most importantly, it must also be made in Cornwall.Images and text provided by the Cornish Pasty Association.

In 1669 a Spanish ship reputed to be carrying two tons of Spanish coins was wrecked nearby and it’s said that even today these silver dollars are washed ashore. Documents on this ship are poor; however treasure hunting has gone on for centuries. In the mid 1800’s tin miners tried to sink a metre wide shaft under the wreck so that the coins would drop in to the tunnel, however the tunnel was flooded before they could get any coins.
Ever wondered how Helston got its name? Apparently the devil was flying across the sky carrying a huge stone which he wanted to use to block the gates of hell. St Michael saw him and they had a great battle, halfway through the devil dropped the stone, where it was dropped became known as Helston! The stone is said to have been built in to the walls of a local hotel,
to celebrate St Michaels victory locals now do the Furry dance through the streets (on Flora Day).
Further down the coast is a town called Praa Sands, its home to Pengersick Castle which has evidence of it dating back 5000 years and is one of Cornwall’s most haunted castles according to the TV program ‘Most Haunted.’ The Pengersick’s were one of the most notorious families in the county, Henry Pengersick was something of a psychopath, it’s even said he killed a monk who turned up to collect taxes! A hooded figure is now seen wondering around the castle grounds, along with many other ghostly apparitions, including that of a woman said to be Enringa Godolphin whose family owned the neighbouring estate and who married Henry.

It is also here that St Piran discovered tin; it was quite by accident when a black stone on his fire leaked a white liquid. The Cornish Flag, the Flag Of St Piran (white cross on a black background) represents white tin flowing from the black rock, or good overcoming evil.
Near to Perranporth is a town called St Agnes which is steeped with local myths, one is the Bolster Legend. It is said that Bolster was an evil giant who ate humans and children at random; the horrible giant lived near the cliffs at St Agnes and terrified the locals. He fell in love with a beautiful girl called Agnes, and when the Knight Sir Constantine and his army searched for him, Bolster overpowered them. It was Agnes who finally broke the giant, she asked him to prove his love for her by filling
a nearby pool with his blood, little did he know that there was a hole in the pool that ran out to sea!
Falmouth lies on the opposite coast and is said to be home to Morgawr, a sea monster that lives in Falmouth Bay. There have been many sightings over the years, and according to the myth the monster prefers hot summers and calm waters. In 1876 a sea serpent was allegedly captured at Gerran’s Bay, then 50 years later another was captured, since then there have been many sightings of the beast. Although people have claimed to have seen it there are only a few photographs to prove its existence. Some believe that Morgawr is actually a plesiosaur which is thought to have become extinct with the dinosaurs.

Newquay is home to a reef known as the Cribbar, here waves can break at up to 20 feet, it was, until recently rarely surfed, probably because of the size of the waves and that fact that it doesn’t require a huge swell or wind to break. On the outskirts on Newquay lies Porth Island, Cornwall’s finest cliff castle, artefacts that have been found here point to it being a centre of prehistoric civilisation.
Cruel Coppinger is a legendary eighteenth century figure in the Cornish smuggling world. It is said that his ship got in to trouble near the shore, (locals would often gather here when there were signs of a ship about to be wrecked so that they could collect anything that washed ashore). The locals said they saw a lone man on the ship leap in to the sea and wade over to the shore.
He then proceeded to grab the coat of an old woman and jump on to the back of a horse of a young woman (Dinah Hamlyn) who had headed down to the shore. He rode off in to the night with the woman and installed himself in her house (uninvited!!). He called himself Coppinger from Denmark, and eventually got in to Dinah’s good books, and they married. He managed to get enough money to buy some land near Trewhiddle and build a house, he then proceeded to make himself the leader of a feared band of pirates, smugglers and wreckers. They even controlled a number of the bridle paths, one of which led to the cave where he kept his stolen booty! In order to keep his stash undetected one of his gang mates beheaded a revenue officer.

The town is now best-known for its eighteenth century gaol, formerly the site of public hangings, and the Church of St Petroc, founded in the sixth century.
There are many stories surrounding Bodmin Moor, including one about a young woman called Charlotte Dymond. She worked as a servant at Penhale Farm on the edge of the Moor, alongside two farmhands, Matthew Weekes and John Stevens. Charlotte and Mathew had a close relationship and it seems they were an unlikely couple, Charlotte was attractive and graceful and a bit of a flirt, whereas Matthew was lame, short and had a bad complexion. On Sunday 14th April
1844 they went for a walk on the moor, Charlotte never returned. Matthew told everyone that Charlotte had gone off on her own, but as time went on and Charlotte didn’t come back he changed his story and said she had gone to find work elsewhere. Charlotte was found dead by a stream a few days after her disappearance, her throat had been cut. Matthew was found and tried for Charlotte’s murder. Some say that Charlotte told Matthew that she had another lover so he killed her in a jealous rage. Circumstantial evidence (muddy boot prints and mud on his clothes) made him guilty and he was hung in Bodmin.

Discover harbour towns
It’s real name is Trethevy Quoit and it hasn’t really changed since the 16th century when it was described as ‘a little howse rayed of mightie stones, standing on a little hill within a fielde.’ It was said to have been built in the early Neolithic period, and is unusual because its stones form an internal chamber. This chamber may have been used as a burial site as there is a mound lying at the base of the structure. The structure is accessed via a small opening where food may have once been placed to give the occupant the energy to pass on to the afterlife.
There is a local tale about Polperro and ‘Battling Billy,’ who ran the Halfway House Inn. Billy is said to have used a hearse to carry his contraband, so that he didn’t get caught. However one day he was caught and shot in the neck by the revenue, he was killed instantly, but
his whip kept beating the horses on. When he reached the main town of Polperro the dead man drove straight off of the dock and into the harbour! Apparently Billy’s ghost still haunts the cobbled streets.
Bodmin Moor, (half of which lies within North Cornwall) houses ‘The Hurlers.’ Said to be the remains of a group of men who were turned to stone because they were playing games on the Moor on a Sunday.
Not only is there local folklore about ghosts and men turning to stone in Caradon but also that of mermaids. According to local legend the mermaid of Padstow created the Doom Bar (a sand bank in the estuary of the River Camel) with her last breath as a dying curse. She was shot by a sailor, who had just brought a new gun, subsequently the Doom Bar still causes problems for fishermen today.
