Extra-Curricular ActivitiesIn addition to its academic programs, Doncaster Secondary College provides students with the opportunity to participate in a wealth of extra-curricular activities – sport, camps and tours, dramatic productions, music, debating and public speaking, clubs and student leadership programs. Many students elect to study a musical instrument and to play in one of the concert bands at the College. We also provide a homework support program and a drop in social club for our International Students.

HomestaysSome International Students are able to stay with relatives during their time at Doncaster Secondary College. However, not all families are able to arrange this type of accommodation.

The College makes a careful selection of suitable home stay accommodation for students who do not have relatives in Melbourne and closely monitors the welfare of students during their stay with their Australian families.

Doncaster Secondary College, a large government secondary school in Melbourne, has offered an International Student Program for over 20 years catering for students from countries such as China, Indonesia, Cambodia, Korea, Germany, Malaysia, Vietnam and Iran.

The College is located in a residential area about 15 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne. It is well serviced by public transport and the Eastern Freeway which provides quick access to the Central Business District of Melbourne. Several major shopping centres and sporting venues are also close-by. The Doncaster/ Templestowe area, in which the College is located, has become a very popular choice for residential purchase by families from Asian countries.

Academic Success and University EntranceThe College expects students to achieve high standards of learning and personal excellence. Every year, many students are awarded A and A+ grades for their final examinations. Approximately 93% of students undertake tertiary studies. The University of Melbourne, Monash, La Trobe, Swinburne and RMIT Universities are selected by the majority of students. International students attending the College have had notable success in VCE examinations and entrance to universities. Popular courses of study include: Commerce, Engineering, Computer Science, Banking and Finance, Architecture and Environmental Studies. Environment

Students of many nationalities attend Doncaster Secondary College. They are respectful and tolerant of each other and their teachers. The College expects that students will follow school rules and support our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Teamwork. All students are required to wear the College uniform.

The College recognises that young people living and studying away from home require special support. Programs have been developed to help students to feel safe and happy so that they are able to learn about their new environment and to concentrate on their studies. A team of International Student Program staff helps students adjust to their new environment and provides advice about their courses of study, as well as tertiary and career choices. Contact with families and guardians is established even prior to students arriving at the College.

Multicultural assistants are available to help students with their classwork, while each new student is teamed with another student or ‘buddy’ who assists in establishing friendships and providing information about the school.

Our orientation pack provides students with details about the College and living in Melbourne. Excursions to some of Melbourne’s sights are also arranged as part of the student orientation program.

Intensive English TuitionInternational students who select Doncaster Secondary College will enrol in the Intensive English Language Program conducted at the College. Students generally spend one semester studying in the Intensive English Language Program, during which time they develop their written, oral and aural skills to a level which will allow them to study effectively in mainstream classes. International students continue to receive specialist tuition in English as an additional Language in small groups throughout their VCE studies. Many International students also elect to continue their studies of Language at the College and other languages such as Chinese, Vietnamese and French.

Curriculum ChoiceDoncaster Secondary College, with an enrolment of approximately 1500 students, is a large school that offers a wide choice of subjects for students in their final years at the school. Students in Years 7 to 10, study an academic curriculum providing a strong foundation in the traditional subjects.

French, Italian and Mandarin are offered as language studies. Senior students studying for their Victorian Certificate of Education show a strong commitment to the areas of Science, Mathematics, Commerce, the Arts and Humanities. At all levels in the College, the importance of the development of Information Technology skills is stressed. When commencing at the College, junior students have the opportunity of joining an advanced learning program. Very able students can undertake acceleration at VCE or elect to pursue University Enhancement Studies.
