Introduction

Throughout history, revolutionary artists have had a strong influence on the unfolding of fashion. Without one there is no other, and simultaneously they continue to seduce people into a world of freedom, expression and emotion.

This evening we are giving our guests an exclusive look at some of the world’s most valuable garments, which illustrate the imperative role painters have played in inspiring the evolution of fashion. From early impressionist works from the late 19th century to social activist paintings from over one hundred years later, see how an adaptation of one’s idea has allowed fashion to be a true art form of its own. With a diverse collection of long chiffon gowns, to angular two piece suits, this couture and ready to wear show is everything from romantic to eccentric.

MONDRIAN‘Composition with yellow, blue and red’, Piet Mondrian released his grid paintings in the 1930’s and he is currently represented at the Tate Museum in London. Mondrian has inspired minimalist fashion which uses right angles and primary colours. The pioneer of the Mondrian dress was the beloved Yves Saint Laurent in the 1960’s.

VAN GOGHYou may be familiar with ‘Starry night’ or ‘Sunflowers’ when speaking about early impressionist painters. Vincent Van Gogh has inspired natural, moody and sometimes intense fashions for many years. Yves Saint Laurent was the first to create Van Gogh fashions, however the ‘Rodarte’ girls were extremely successful with their renditions for spring 2012.

PICASSO

Best known for cubism and abstraction, Pablo Picasso has had a major influence on many designers. With the use of dynamic shapes and vibrant colour, his paintings have set the bar for limitless fashion. Following the lead of Yves Saint Laurent, we still always expect to see hints of Picasso’s genesis in many modern collections.

POLLOCK

Chaos is what Jackson Pollock was all about. He was the first to experiment with splattering paint onto canvas in the late 1940’s, and there is no reason why this technique cannot be used on clothing today. Initiating a style which is contemporary, Pollock has been a huge contributor to the creation of crafty clothing. Dolce and Gabana is the largest labels to do an interpretation of his Work.

WARHOLMarilyn Munro and Elvis Presley were just a couple muses of his work. Andy Warhol’s main involvement was with celebrity pop culture. During the 1960‘s, he popularized screen printing with bold use of colour. His work was highly graphic and iconic, as is the Warhol inspired clothing we see today from tee shirts to the runway.

MATISSE

When looking at his paintings, it is obvious that Henri Matisse had a love for saturated colour and patterns. He was not hung up on realism, rather he chose unpredictable colour in unpredictable places. He was the leader in the Fauvist movement of the early 20th century. His loose and playful style has been mimicked many times in fashion, Yves Saint Laurent again being the first.

MONETClaude Monet was the founder of French Impressionist painting, who strongly believed that one’s perception of nature was more important than nature itself. Most famously known for his ‘Water Lillies’, the light and organic atmosphere of his work has been slightly altered to achieve highly feminine and beautiful clothing for women. For example, Ellie Saab’s Haute Couture Spring 2010 collection perfectly replicated the legend of Monet.

HARINGResponding to New York street culture of the 1980’s, Keith Haring’s imagery translates into issues of birth, death, war and sex. His illustrations have been recognized internationally and used for ad campaigns, public art and raising social awareness. Haring has collaborated with many design companies and his icons can be seen nearly everywhere.

MALEVICHKazimir Malevich was a Russian painter and theorist during the early 20th century. Nearly any geometric or minimalist fashion could be derived from his ‘avant-garde’ approach. Malevich inspired designs include formations made up of circles, squares, lines or rectangles. Being the first in the Suprematist movement, his ideas are still being rendered over a hundred years later.
