INTRODUCTION
This list was compiled as a Bicentennial project to help show the important contribution the Eastern Shore of Virginia made toward winning our Nation's independence. It should be a useful addition to Accomack County's collections of research material.
Although all available sources on the Eastern Shore and some in the State Archives have been checked, the list is far from complete. Thus the double-spaoe format has been used so additional entries can be made when verified. Source material included both manuscripts and printed books. Revoluiionar,y Soldiers and Sailors from Accomack County, Virginia, by Stratton Nottingham, contained the most names, although they had to be separated from descendants. Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, by John H. Gwathmey, provided additional names and verified the ranks and branches of services of others. The History of Virginia's Navy, by Robert Armistead Stewart, was most helpful in this branch of service. Memoir of General John Cropper, by Barton Haxall Wise, and the Patriot Index of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, were valuable research tools. Also, private papers of some local genealogists contained findings not otherwise listed. Historical Re star of Officers of the Continental durin the War of the Revolution, April 1775 to December 17 3, _by 1".B.li.eitman, contains brief service records and excerpts from it follow this list of army, navy and militia men.
The highest militia office was that of County Lieutenant. Accomack had three in turn. Colonel Soutby Simpson served until his death in 1779. Colonel George Corbin served until 1781 and as Judge Advocate in court martials thereafter. He was succeeded by his nephew, Colonel John Cropper, formerly of the Continental Army, who served until the end of the war.

PUBLIC SERVICg
'Ibis list of Accomack County people who were paid for public service from 1781 to 1783 was found in the Archives of the Virginia State Library. If such a list were available for those who sold Sl!pplies or transported troops from 1775 to 1781, it undoubtedly would be much longer.
