YANMAR DELIVERS FOR ALUMINIUM MARINE & FANTASEA CRUISES

The fleet of Yanmar powered commercial boats operating on the Great Barrier Reef has increased with the recently commissioned Fantasea Sunrise now in operation.

Fantasea Sunrise is a 24m long, 8.5 m beam aluminium catamaran built by Aluminium Marine in Brisbane to a design from the renowned NSW based naval architects Incat Crowther.

A pair of Yanmar 6AY-WET engines are installed, each engine punching out 829mhp (610kW) at a conservative 1900 RPM.

The Yanmar 6AY-WET when configured at the 829mhp rating is approved for maximum throttle settings up to 10 hours of continuous operation at any one time. The engines are designed by Yanmar to operate in applications up to 3000 hours a year when at this rating, one that is considered to be conservative when compared to many other engine brands used in the fast ferry industry.

Inside the engine room, the Yanmar 6 in-line cylinder engines are mated to Yanmar’s own marine transmission, the YXH240 making for a propulsion package fully warranted, tested and supplied by a single manufacturer.

Construction of the vessel was started in September 2010 with both designer and builder developing a vessel that was flexible in its configuration. In June 2011 Riverside Marine commenced negotiations to purchase this vessel and subsequent changes to the interior layout were made to customize it to suit their planned requirements.

Aluminium Marine who is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year is a solid supporter of Yanmar, having built and powered three fast ferries in the past 24 months with Yanmar power.

On a daily basis Fantasea Sunrise takes tourists from Hamilton Island to experience the wonder of the outer Great Barrier Reef on the Fantasea owned “Reefworld” floating platform. The multipurpose design of Fantasea Sunrise allows the vessel to be used also for commuter transfers and for VIP charter work when cruise ships frequent the Whitsundays.

Operated by Riverside Marines subsidiary, Fantasea Cruises, the ferry is based out of Shute Harbour in North Queensland.

Fantasea Sunrise can carry 157 passengers under cover in air conditioned comfort as well a further 40 on deck. The vessel is fitted with 119 seats in the main deck cabin and 38 lounge seats in the upper deck cabin. The vessel has been tailored to Fantasea’s operations with large interior lounges and striking graphics throughout. Maximum speed is an impressive 28 knots, with her loaded contracted service speed of 25 knots easily achieved.

By any measure the Yanmar 6AY-WET at a dry weight of 2365kgs is an imposing marine diesel engine. Its reputation of being a strong performer with excellent fuel consumption was again confirmed during the 24 hour delivery trip back to its home port in Nth Qld following commissioning.

The bore of each of the six cylinders is 155mm and the total displacement is 20.379 litres. This engine features direct injection, single turbocharger and Yanmar’s own mechanical fuel injection and governor system which provides easy compliance to the IMO Tier 2 emission standards.

After the Fantasea Sunrise was launched, Power Equipment technical staff were on hand to commission the engines and run sea trials. Andrew Luscombe (PE Service Engineer for Queensland) and Jim Kibblewhite (PE Engineering and Training Manager) undertook all the operational checks, while Greg Honisett, Ray Harris and Michael Blair were also in attendance.

Power Equipment is very pleased to have partnered with Aluminium Marine and Riverside Marine on this project and look forward to reporting further projects for both clients in future editions of Power News.

Aluminium Marine is currently building an identical design to Fantasea Sunrise, also to be powered by Yanmar’s 6AY-WET engines, but for a separate client. Further information:

DINGO CELEBRATES 30 YEARSDingo Australia is about as iconic as an Aussie work product can be. The company name, its headquarters in the bush town of Dalby and a unique world leading product sets this brand apart.

Established in 1981, Dingo celebrates 30 years of success this year. And while Yanmar diesel engines were not on board with Dingo from the start, robust Yanmar diesel engines have been powering Dingo equipment since the mid 1990’s.

The fundamental concept of the original Dingo in 1981 was to design and produce a hydraulic wheel barrow. At the start the power source was a single cylinder, 10hp petrol engine.

Fast forward 30 years and the concept remains the same, but the technology is vastly different. Yanmar’s TNV series diesel engines, both the 3TNV70 and 3TNV76 power the majority of the Dingo range. So much so that the Dingo chassis is specifically designed around the physical size and configuration of the Yanmar TNV.

“Originally we used Yanmar’s L Series air cooled engines for the Dingo units headed to the mines,” Dingo Australia Managing Director Gary Briggs said.

“Now the Yanmar TNV is the mainstay of our product range. The Dingo K9-3, K9-4 and K9-5 models all use Yanmar TNV engines as standard equipment.”

“After almost 20 years of specifying and installing Yanmar engines, I couldn’t be happier,” Gary said.

“The Yanmar engines never break down, they are really very good in terms of their power, reliability and durability. And the warranty claims are nonexistent. The engine is a key component of the Dingo and the Yanmar has absolutely zero problems in any respect.” says Gary Briggs.

For the Dingo application , Yanmar produces a special build with a unique set of specifications to suit the Dingo requirement. The fan, radiator, exhaust and alternator are all modified for the Dingo application. But the core Yanmar TNV mechanicals remain true to Yanmar’s specifications.

“The volume of Yanmar engines which we order means that we actually have our own Dingo build on the Yanmar production line. We even have our own unique Dingo bar code on the TNV’s that are spec’d and destined for Dingo at Dalby” says Gary Briggs.

The relationship between Dingo Australia and Yanmar is rock solid. Dingo Australia people regularly attend service briefings at Power Equipment’s Australian headquarters in Melbourne. And from time to time Dingo Australia management has been to Japan to see the TNV’s roll down the Yanmar production line.

And while some might see Dalby as a remote location in Queensland, Yanmar has always provided exceptional support. The regular shipment of engines and parts to Dalby goes like clockwork and whenever there is a need for sales or technical support, Yanmar people are soon on Gary Briggs’ doorstep.

When the Dingo was first launched it was little more than a mini loader; a sturdy workhorse with a bucket. These days the Dingo is sold with a bucket and a string of accessory attachments. These include a post hole digger, trencher, rotary hoe with many more attachments available.

One of the first things that come to mind when we think about New Zealand is that Kiwis own more yachts per capita than any other nation. This simple fact illustrates their love of sailing and the sea and it is no surprise then that we find examples of high level builders, designers and sailors collaborating to create world class yachts within an extremely competitive world market.

A recent example is Fitzroy Yachts who are based in Taranaki on the West Coast on New Zealand’s North Island. In May this year at the prestigious World Superyacht awards Fitzroy Yachts won two prized silver Neptune’s for ‘Best Sailing Yacht 45m+’ and ‘Sailing Yacht of the Year’ for their Dubois Naval Architects designed 49.7m fast cruising sloop.

NEW RELEASE V8 OFFERS

FULL THROTTLEPERFORMANCEYanmar has announced the arrival of the all new Yanmar 8LV series in Australia – this is a V8, 4.46 litre diesel engine that will astonish boaters with its acceleration, fuel economy and low noise.

6

The Yanmar 8LV has applications from family blue water cruisers and sport fishers all the way through to ski boats. That’s no mistake – here is a V8 diesel engine that delivers all the attributes of power, performance, safety and economy to the ski boat market!

“The Yanmar 8LV is expected to generate wide interest from Australian boat builders and our dealer base handling repower enquiries,” said Michael Blair, Marine Sales Manager for Power Equipment.

“There is ever growing demand for more technically advanced and refined diesel engines amongst the boating public. Informed boaters are demanding hi-tech contemporary diesel technology and the Yanmar 8LV is just such an engine.”

The Yanmar 8LV is offered at 320 mhp (239 kW) the 8LV320, and 370 mhp (272 kW) the 8LV370.

At the heart of the new Yanmar 8LV is a 90°, V8 cylinder block. It features twin turbo chargers and direct injection with a common rail fuel system. There are four valves per cylinder. Tipping the scales at just 435 kgs dry weight without gearbox, this Yanmar continues the Yanmar tradition of delivering high power from a low weight package. The Yanmar 8LV - V8 diesel engine has been designed and packaged to suit the customer’s choice of a stern drive, conventional down-angle or vee drive transmission.

Yanmar has beefed up their ZT350 stern drive unit to provide a robust, durable leg which can handle the power and torque of the Yanmar 8LV. The new Yanmar ZT370 sterndrive has been specifically designed and built to mate to the Yanmar 8LV.

The quiet hydrodynamic ZT370 has an upgraded hydraulic clutch which is destined

to impress, as the ZT350 already is well known for its exceptional smoothness during gear shifting. Precision forged gears deliver long life and the two counter rotating propellers have been purpose matched for superb acceleration and tight hold tracking.

The 8LV engine is EPA Tier 3 compliant. It has amazingly low noise levels and delivers smooth performance with a flat torque curve.

In addition to the new Yanmar ZT370 sterndrive, the compact 8LV diesel can be installed with Yanmar’s KMH50 series transmission, down angle or V-drive. Single or twin installations are easily achieved in sterndrive or inboard configurations.

This is the first engine to use Yanmar’s own, newly developed CAN-bus vessel control system, the Yanmar ECS. In the near future it will also be available with Yanmar’s new ECS joystick control system.

The ECS joystick control system facilitates 360º turn, sideways and diagonal movement and has already impressed Power Equipment’s staff during a recent factory demonstration.

A key feature of the high torque 8LV is its wide power and torque band. It idles at 550 rpm, making for an impressive crawling speed in the marina and is aided even further by a trolling valve option on its shaft drive gearbox models. Maximum rated engine speed is 3,800 rpm – well ahead of other engines in this segment and hence providing for a wide available power range.

Further benefits are exceptionally low noise levels and minimized vibration, ease of installation and servicing, and the advantage of a powerful 12V / 180A alternator.

During August Power Equipment and Yanmar combined to make the 2011 Sydney Boat Show the first display of the new 8LV-370Z engine model and ZT370 stern drive in the Asia / Pacific Region, a decision that was rewarded with high level of interest from both prospective Australian and New Zealand clients who were in attendance. The main interest in this exciting new model was from boat builders involved in super yacht tender construction, high performance RIB’s (rigid hull inflatable boats) and Patrol Craft users. With engine stocks due to arrive in the last quarter of 2011 the future is already looking quite exciting for this new model.

World class weather over the five days saw some 68,724 visitors attend this year’s event which was again held at the world class venue at Darling Harbour Sydney.

With 8 Power Equipment staff , 8 local dealer representatives and 2 management from Power Equipment’s NZ subsidiary Whiting Power in attendance during the five days we had plenty of experience on hand to handle the many and varied queries from both the boating public and boat builders.

The strong Australian Dollar no doubt contributed to a record level of imported craft on the marina however it was great to see local NSW boat builders and strong Yanmar users such as Sea Wind Catamarans, Stebercraft and Sydney Yachts all likewise having prominent displays.

This year we were fortunate to have management visiting from both Mase Generators and Yanmar Asia who managed to incorporate a visit to the boat show following training and meetings interstate.

Our excellent display managed and prepared by Ian Mills (NSW Marine Sales Manager) featured Yanmar 1GM10, 3YM30,3JH5, 4JH4-HTE models to cater for the high level of yacht interest which SIBS is renowned plus 4LHA / 6LPA / 6LY3 / 6CX-530CR + 8LV 370 with the new ZT370 stern drive for the power boat market.

Together with a 6HY-WET (700mhp Tier 2) commercial engine, Gori propellers and a range of Yanmar powered Mase Generators there was no doubt the 2011 Power Equipment display contained the most extensive and impressive display of diesel engines, generators and folding propellers on offer at the SIBS.

Michael Blair (P.E Marine Sales Manager) stated, “Yanmar is a very strong brand in Sydney, not only does it dominate the auxiliary engine power in the many racing and cruising yachts that use the wonderful waterways around Sydney Harbour but is also the engine brand of choice for many government applications such as Water Police, Pollution Control, Marine Rescue and Fisheries Patrol. With such a broad range of clients we always look forward to this event as it gives us a great opportunity to get feedback and learn more from our clients on what their individual requirements are.

This event is one of the most expensive on the calendar for us to be involved with but it also is one that we would not miss as it always delivers results for us and 2011 was no exception.

Power Equipment has exhibited consecutively for 21 years at the SIBS and despite many of our regular competitors such as Caterpillar, MTU, John Deere, Isuzu, Westerbeke & Cummins Onan not participating in 2011 you can be assured that Mase, Gori and Yanmar, PE will be back in 2012!

YANMAR POWERS A PASSION ORIGIN BOATS AXIS 8000 HT PLATE BLUE WATER GAME FISHING BOAT. YANMAR 6LPA-STZTP2 STERN-DRIVE.

Richard Pozzey is a passionate fishing and boating enthusiast. His passion has led him to build and customise this magnificent Origin 8.0m boat to meet a market looking for a serious offshore fishing and lifestyle boating experience. The criteria was to create an economical fishing platform for offshore light tackle game and reef fishing as well as some lifestyle features for short term live aboard comforts. The Origin 8000 HT Axis has evolved from a love of blue water fishing and a desire to design and build a better plate aluminium game boat with superb performance and quality and built to last for Australian conditions.

Powering this dream boat Richard chose a Yanmar diesel engine, specifically the Yanmar 6LPA six cylinder diesel marine engine with Yanmar’s own ZT350 stern drive leg.

Long before a single piece of plate aluminium was cut, Richard sat down with Col Svensson, from Origin Boats and a blank sheet of paper and set out the design and power criteria. The boat needed to be 8.0m long. It needed to have a high fine entry, 18° deadrise, high sheerline to accommodate 4 bunks, 500 litres of fuel for a 500 Nm range, and the ability to stay at sea for 3 to 4 day long fishing trips. And of course the boat had to be road legal for towing without the need for special permits.

Fast forward to the beautiful Origin that sits alongside the dock today. It is a customised work of art, one which has more than exceeded Richard’s highest expectations.

“We believe that the Yanmar sterndrive option is the preferable power package for this application. Yanmar diesel power brings a lot of special attributes to this rig.”

Yanmar’s sophisticated 6LPA is a true hi-performance and well proven package with a direct injected, mechanical governor equipped turbocharged and intercooled straight 6 cylinder engine pumping out 315mhp at 3800 rpm at the flywheel. The 4 valve per cylinder engine boasts a big 4.2 litre displacement for sustained torque through the mid rev range while still offering an impressive power to weight advantage coming in with a dry weight of 408kgs.

The quiet hydrodynamic ZT350 has a hydraulic clutch which is destined to impress all who get to experience it. The ZT350 already is well known for its exceptional smoothness during gear shifting amongst discerning boat owners. Precision forged gears combined with an integral cooling system deliver long life and the two counter rotating propellers have been purpose matched for superb acceleration and tight hold tracking.

“Because the weight of the sterndrive engine is fixed lower in the hull, it has much better handling. Diesel is much more economical than the four stroke outboards, so not only is the boat cheaper to operate, but the distance travelled on a tank of fuel is far greater.”

The minimum outboard power previously fitted to the Origin has been a single 300 HP engine. At an optimal speed of 23 knots the fuel consumption was around 35 litres per hour.

YANMAR POWERS A PASSION ORIGIN BOATS AXIS 8000 HT PLATE BLUE WATER GAME FISHING BOAT. YANMAR 6LPA-STZTP2 STERN-DRIVE.

By comparison the Yanmar 6LPA delivers an optimum cruise speed of 22 knots at 2800 RPM. At this speed, fuel consumption is minimal at between 20 to 26 litres per hour. “Through our association with Yanmar we have learnt a lot about the very significant benefits of diesel power,” Richard said.

“The Origin 8000HT Axis is a beautiful riding boat with the Yanmar sterndrive package installed. The power on tap allows the boat to effortlessly plough through blue water. We can set the throttle and let the engine do it’s job; there’s no need to be on and off the power adjusting for each wave.”

Amongst both recreational and professional boaters, Craigh Hurst is revered for his work in re-powering boats. In short Craigh Hurst enjoys the highest possible reputation for removing a tired, worn out engine from an engine room and replacing it with a modern Yanmar marine diesel engine to present a clinical engine room that is the absolute epitome of neat.

Craigh commenced his working life as a diesel mechanic. With his grandfather an engineer from the UK and his father an engineer running a machine shop with a staff of 200, it seemed inevitable that Craigh would spend his life in an allied field.

In the early 90’s Craigh established his own engineering business at Bermagui, on the south coast of NSW. His father in law operated a trawler, so between his fledgling business and his father in law’s commercial fishing vessel, Craigh’s destiny was taking shape.

Pretty much from the outset, Craigh has been involved with the Yanmar brand. His first Yanmar installation was Brad Carlin’s 28’ Bertram. The old petrol engines were removed and a pair of Yanmar 4LH shaft drive engines were fitted which still are in service today. This work was slotted in-between general engineering and fabrication work being undertaken for the local home building and renovation industry.

“At this time Bermagui had a really strong commercial fishing fleet as well as a lot of recreational game fishing boats,” Craigh recalled.

Clearly the exceptional work performed

on the Bertram repower was noticed by those who count. More re-powers followed at Bermagui and in 2005, Power Equipment appointed Craigh Hurst Engineering as an authorised Yanmar dealer. Good times followed and in 2010 Craigh expanded the business with a bigger workshop and an increased compliment of machine tools.

Along the way, the reputation of Craigh Hurst spread like wildfire through the professional and recreational boating communities. Boat owners were shipping their boats from ports all along the NSW coast to Bermagui to have Craigh undertake an engine room transplant.

“Since I started doing engine repowers in boats, I have endorsed the Yanmar brand exclusively,” Craigh said.

“The Yanmar marine engines are such strong performers for the simple reason that they are engineered purely and solely as a marine engine. The commercial range of engines is very popular with professional fishermen because, in addition to the performance credentials, the mechanical governor system and the 500 hour service interval are all a big benefit.”

Craigh Hurst operates in an interesting sector. The re-power market is very strong due to the comparatively high cost of trading up to a new boat. But at the same time the number of marine engineers who do re-powers is dwindling.

In this industry Craigh Hurst is something of an icon. What sets him apart is his engineering background, his years of training and working to fine tolerances.

“Provided the client has the budget, I always like to strip out the engine room

of a boat and start fresh,” Craigh said.

A repower usually involves a modification to the engine bearers, so to begin at this base level it makes good sense to have a bare engine room. With modified bearers and a fresh cover of flowcoat throughout the engine bay, the work performed by Craigh Hurst is nothing short of immaculate.

“I was well trained by my father,” Craigh said. “There is a lot to be said for keeping everything in the engine room simple and neat. It’s one thing to work on a boat alongside the wharf. But if you have a problem while at sea the crew on board will appreciate a neat and easy to follow layout.”

With over 50 Yanmar engines installed, Craigh is proud of the fact that he has only ever had to repair one engine with an oil leak. As a true professional, he has an absolute aversion to leaks while at the same time he takes great pride in having the skill and the patience to line up engines, transmissions and prop shafts correctly.

In this industry word of mouth is everything. Craigh Hurst has obviously a huge number of very happy customers up and down the coast, spreading further the good news of his installation, repower and service work.

“Much of my success is attributed to the strength of the Yanmar brand,” Craigh said. “The Yanmar engines perform really well and they are exceptionally fuel efficient. That combines to make my job so much easier.”

“Yanmar’s extensive range of pleasure and commercial marine engines has proven to be a big asset. The dedicated technical support and great service from the Power Equipment Area Manager Steve Parsons has also been invaluable.”

FRONTIER PNG

L SERIES : THE BACKBONE OF SUBURBAN YANMAR DEALER Hempfield Small Motor Service in metropolitan Perth is one of the many small Yanmar Dealers who collectively, supply a significant number of Yanmar engines into the marketplace.

Fred Hobbs founded Hempfields in 1985. Since then he has, as his business name suggests, been supplying small engine powered products to the trade and general consumers.

“Generally the public will buy a petrol powered product, based on the cheap price,” said Fred Hobbs.

“But when it comes to the trade or a mining application, Yanmar diesel power is the preferred option. We’ve been selling and rigging power products for 15 years now, concentrating on the L Series of engines.”

The single cylinder, air cooled Yanmar L series is used by Hempfields to power water pumps, pressure cleaners and generator

sets. Fred is supported by a small crew who take a Yanmar L Series engine then mate it to the pump or generator, mount it in a carrier and ship it out.

“The people at Power Equipment are great to deal with,” Fred said. “The support is first rate and the parts back up excellent.”

“I have found the L Series to be a great product. The range, from 4hp to 10hp suits our applications perfectly and the reliability of the engine is first rate.”

11Yanmar TF Series – Water Cooled Horizontal Engine

Frontier Resources Ltd have been a long time user of Yanmar industrial engines, for their operations in Tasmania and Papua New Guinea.

“We’ve come to rely on the dependability and just plain “hard to kill-ability”. When you’re operating in remote and extreme environments like we do, from the winter snows of SW Tasmania to the humid islands of PNG, you need your gear to keep running. When breakdowns mean getting in

a chopper at $2000 an hour, and every day of lost time costs $5000 a day, you can’t afford to muck around with quality.

The TF series engines have operated for up to 5 years in PNG with minimal maintenance running our drilling supply pumps, 24hrs a day 7 days a week, for months on end. An oil change, and a wash down if they’re lucky and they just keep chugging on.

We also use the air cooled L series to run

our small lighting generators and core saws. Again they’re bullet proof.

On our rigs we’ve used the TNE series engines with great success. Again their reliability has been a bonus!

“I can’t really say that much about Power Equipment’s parts support, except that the few times we have needed spares, they’ve been there backing us up.”

Rarely do you see an engine that has clocked up 6000 hours in a commercial fishing boat, and the engine looks just as fresh and clean as the day it was bolted into the bearers.

Matthew Creek, deep water line pro fisherman operating out of Bermagui on the southern NSW coast, is living proof that a gamble is worth taking. In early 2007 backing little more than the impressive Yanmar brand name, Matthew took a deep breath and had installed the first Yanmar 6HYM commercial engine in Australia.

Being an experienced professional, Matthew knew that time was up on the 14 litre V8 diesel fitted to his Randell 48, named Marcello. The engine had already been re-built twice and the same old problems were beginning to re-surface.

Matthew was well aware of the reputation that Yanmar had in the professional fishing community.

“At the time I was well aware that no one in Australia had installed the Yanmar 6HYM-ETE before me,” Matthew said.

“All I could do was look at the engine specifications, compare and then depend on Yanmar’s first rate reputation in the commercial marine engine field”.

“I had some discussion with some blokes that know a lot about marine engines and they reassured me I was making the right decision to go with a Yanmar. I was greatly influenced by Domenic Puglisi who fitted the earlier Yanmar 6KYM model into his trawler some years before.”

Due to the use of a ZF down angle transmission, the installation was able to make use of the existing shaft and prop, but the engine ended up being slightly further forward in the hull.

The changeover took just over three weeks.

“Since the repower I have used up to 100 litres of fuel less every day that I go to sea. That’s a saving of about $20,000 in fuel a year.”

“Another significant benefit for me is the service interval on the Yanmar 6HYM-ETE is 500 hours. I used to have change the oil and filters in my previous engine every 250 hours, so now I can stay operating for double the time before having to do any service work.”

Matthew works alone at seas and runs at 11 knots or about 1600 rpm, with plenty of throttle still left in reserve if needed. At that pace it uses 18 litres an hour.

Combined with the MASE GenSet I.S.7 used to power up the fridges in the galley and the boats electrical needs Matthew is a proud supporter on Yanmar marine engines.

Michael Blair (National Marine Sales Manager for Power Equipment) stated that since Matthew’s commitment to be the first purchaser in Australia, the 6HY series has proven to be a remarkable success story for us and the many boat owners using it, in fact we now have several units in trawler and passenger ferry applications with more than 15,000 hours of operation with absolutely no faults reported to date. These units still impress their owners on a daily basis, not only with the low fuel usage being achieved but the fact that oil leaks, regular maintenance and downtime are a thing of the past for them.

“The Yanmar delivers on all counts. It has the right amount of power; it’s the right weight and has excellent fuel economy for the job.”

“Now after 6000 hours on the clock and some four years in service I couldn’t be happier with the decision to choose the Yanmar over the others.”

Yanmar’s 6HYM-ETE model engine is a purpose built commercial grade marine engine. It includes Yanmar’s latest combustion chamber design named ASSIGN; a system originally pioneered by Yanmar on their large bore, low speed propulsion engines.

This technology combined with Yanmar’s own mechanical fuel system is delivering impressive fuel consumption results and is giving commercial fishermen something to smile about even with the current price of fuel.

The 600hp twin turbo (441kW) at 2100rpm is the perfect engine for those who require their engine to run at full throttle for up to ten hours. The cylinder head is a quad valve design. This lower power rated version will work hard in conditions demanding continuous commercial use.

This technology combined with Yanmar’s own mechanical fuel system has given commercial fishermen something to smile about with the current price of fuel.

The re-power was undertaken by Craigh Hurst at Bermagui. In typical style, the engine room was completely stripped right back to a bare shell. In addition to a new engine, the Randell benefitted from a re-wire, new hydraulics and a new MASE I.S. 7 gen set. The engine room was transformed to be completely Yanmar powered.

A government subsidy and some innovative use of water rights has provided the encouragement for a Victorian farmer to acquire a JCB powered centre pivot pumping system. The JCB Irrigation Pack from Power Equipment is proving to be a popular, performing package throughout the farming community.

Cobram wheat and canola farmer Murray Lumley worked with Cobram Irrigation to develop a system which has at the heart a JCB DieselMax 444 engine complete with Power Equipment’s ACP200 control system. This delivers the ultimate in reliable and dependable pumping power.

According to Power Equipment’s Dealer, Micheal Brennan, from Cobram Irrigation, the JCB Irrigation Pack is the benchmark for quality.

“This installation was a first for us,” said Michael Brennan.

“It was our first involvement with Power Equipment and the first time we have

installed a JCB engine with Yanmar control system. It certainly won’t be our last. The JCB engine is performing very well.

“We are very happy with the JCB Irrigation Pack. With the demand for water pumps on the rise we can see ourselves installing many more Power Equipment systems. In this application the JCB diesel engine moves water though a Valley 388m centre pivot to water wheat. It does this job perfectly”.

“We look forward to a long standing relationship with Power Equipment to supply us with JCB engines and auto start / stop systems”.

The JCB powered irrigation pack is ideally suited to applications where operators require premium quality and dependable units that can be relied upon to get the job done.

The heart of the JCB Irrigation Pack consists of a highly refined, environmentally clean and proven JCB DieselMax 444 engine. This 4-cylinder, 4.4 litre powerhouse boasts 4 valves per cylinder with high torque at low speeds. The JCB DieselMax is available in rating from 50 to 120kW depending upon application.

The Power Equipment ACP200 – Auto Start / Stop control system also provides peace of mind to operators. The ACP200 is designed to be flexible enough to operate with most applications. It can be used as a demand start for generators, although in this application it is controlled by the irrigator. It can be programmed for multiple starts and be stopped or started by float or pressure switches.

The Power Equipment ACP200 also has inbuilt engine protection features to guard against low oil, high water temperature, low coolant level, fan belt breakage and shuts the engine down accordingly.

As far as competitive industry sectors go, compressors are about as tough as it gets. While many have been content to merely survive through the GFC, Brisbane based manufacturer Glenco has excelled.

While there are many factors that have underscored the success at Glenco, there is one which stands head and shoulders above the rest; quality. At the heart of the quality equation is the legendary Yanmar L series of diesel engines powering the range of Airmac branded compressors.

Having purchased Glenco in 2002, MD Paul Korganow quickly realised that there was no future in local compressor manufacture due to the high cost of local labour and materials. At this time Glenco was building and supplying piston compressor sets driven by an electric motor or a small petrol engine.

With an eye to the future, Paul Korganow went to his suppliers to develop compressor sets to suit the Australian market. The outcome was a line of custom designed and manufactured compressors, of better quality and more competitively priced than those previously manufactured by Glenco in Australia.

Five years ago Paul Korganow sensed a shift in the local market.

“Ever so gradually the demand started to shift to a mining market driven compressor product,” Paul said.

“Contractors and others heading to the mines to do work were asking for a diesel powered piston compressor. Subsequently Glenco became the first in Australia to develop a complete range of these diesel/piston machines. At the time our competitors were offering the odd model here and there.”

Glenco started about 6 years ago with Yanmar, introducing the Yanmar L series single cylinder diesel engine to the range.

Today the Yanmar L series engine is the backbone of the Airmac product range. These are piston compressors which are manufactured overseas with a Fusheng compressor then imported to Australia as a PKD package.

The Yanmar L Series is a single cylinder air cooled diesel engine. The power output varies from 4.2 hp (L48 Series), 6.7 (L70 Series) to 10 hp (L100 series). All three models are purchased and fitted by Glenco.

Once the Airmac branded compressors land in the Brisbane Glenco facility, the team install the specified Yanmar L series engine along with a host of additional hardware.

In standard configuration the Airmac is a mine spec package with an emergency stop system. The Yanmar supplied electronic fuel stop kit is fitted to the Yanmar L series engines by the Yanmar Distributor, Power Equipment, in Melbourne before the engines are shipped to Glenco.

This is a premium product developed specifically for the demanding Australian market, specifically the mining sector.

“Yanmar diesel engines is our diesel engine of choice,” said Paul Korganow.

“The power options within the L series suits us really well. There is an excellent spread of power, much better than competitive brands.”

“The Yanmar brand has an excellent name in industry. It is well accepted and is a good match for us at Glenco. We very rarely see any service or reliability issues, and that is important as our products are sent all over Australia to some very remote locations where the work is demanding and difficult.”

“And if that’s not enough the support from Power Equipment, the Australian Distributor for Yanmar is absolutely first rate. The support at Power Equipment from the sales force, the service support and parts back up is miles ahead of their competition.”

In addition to the Airmac range of compressors, Glenco also specifies the Yanmar 3 and 4TNV series engines on the FS Curtis range of rotary screw compressors. These are larger portable diesel powered screw compressors wholly manufactured in Japan.

“We decided a long time ago to stay out of the cut price, bargain basement section of the market,” Paul Korganow said.

“Our focus has been on quality and Yanmar has been alongside us all the way. They have helped us achieve our objectives in terms of performance and quality. The Yanmar brand continues to be an important aspect of our success.”

Jetwave Industrial Equipment, incorporated in Adelaide in 1992 is the only manufacturer and importer of high pressure cleaners in South Australia.

Jetwave has expanded its operations in order to keep up with the mining boom that has gripped the state. Research and Development Manager, Craig Starke said the company has never been busier. “We are continuing to develop new products and are focusing on heavy duty industrial high pressure cleaners for the mining industry” he said. Jetwave continues to be a major supplier of customised heavy duty hot and cold water high pressure cleaners to mining companies such as Rio Tinto, Newcrest Mine, Newmont Tanami, McCarthur River Mine and Comalco.

A heavy duty RHS hot dipped galvanised skid mounted hot water unit is the latest unit developed by Jetwave specifically for the mining industry. This specific model was developed after exhaustive collaboration with many of the top executives within the mining sector. The machine is rated up to 5,000 psi working pressure with a high water flow rate of 23 litres per minute.

The heart of the unit is a Yanmar 3TNV82, 29.4hp, 3 cylinder water cooled diesel fuelled industrial engine operating at a

comfortable 2,200 rpm. The engine drives a forged nickel plated head triplex piston plunger pump via a fully covered industrial V-Belt system. Production Manager, Brett Dale said this model is the latest flagship of our range and is virtually indestructible. “The Yanmar diesel engine purrs like a kitten and is quieter than the equivalent standard air cooled engine. It works so much easier and is so smooth you can “rest your cup of coffee” on the radiator when in use.” he said.

A 2.2kva generator is direct coupled to the PTO providing power for the burner blower motor. This blower motor distributes heat from the diesel fired burner encompassing a large 3mm seamless vertical heating coil, with a maximum burst pressure of 15,000 psi. The burner is capable of adjustable temperatures from 30° C up to 130° C. This unit is also available with optional crane or forklift lifting points for ease of moving and relocating.

Jetwave Territory Manager, Trevor Thomas said this model is walking out the door and we are struggling to keep up the supply. “They virtually sell themselves which is making my job easier given the rise in demand for diesel driven units in the mining industry” he said.

After 3 years of interrupted construction building “Next Phase”, Ron Jensen had the opportunity to do a shakedown cruise from Port Geographe to the Abrolhos Islands off WA’s Mid West coast during April 2011.

The number of wrecks along the west coast give ample evidence of a coastline that is not for the novice and this is highlighted in the Abrolhos Islands themselves – although helped by the latest charts for the Easter and Wallabi groups which are excellent (the same cannot be said for the Pelsart group!). The Dept of Fisheries provide and maintain excellent moorings and these should be used when possible. Caution when anchoring is advised. Many places have a little sand over limestone/coral rubble and therefore 2 anchors are often a necessity for a good nights sleep!

Next Phase is a Swarbrick 9.7 slightly modified to take asymmetric sails and anchor stowage on a small bowsprit. At just over 3 tonnes, the vessel loaded down with safety equipment and stores added another 500+ kilos to this. The nice thing was that with the vessel’s racing background it was still capable of delivering fast (for a yacht) passages so that we were able to day sail up and down the coast.

A Yanmar 3YM20 3 cylinder diesel with heat exchanger and 80 amp alternator complements the boat well. To transfer this power efficiently, a 15 x 10 inch 2 blade Gori folding propeller has been fitted. A top speed of 7.6 knots (in light condition) and cruising speed of 5 knots at 1800 revs is good. The heat exchanger has been connected to the pressurized hot water system and having a hot shower in the cockpit after a swim is

Along with a small solar panel, the engine was able to keep the start and house batteries in excellent condition and still run the freezer, ‘Gonzo’ our Autohelm 2000 tiller pilot, Hella LED lighting, sound system and 12 inch chart plotter. POWER EQUIPMENT WA APPOINTS NEW SALES MANAGER

POWER EQUIPMENT APPOINTS THEIR FIRST EVER FEMALE SALES PERSON

Power Equipment has announced the appointment of Greg Honisett to the position of Sales Manager for the WA/NT region. In this role, Greg is responsible for all marine sales within the territory, plus to jointly manage Power Product sales in conjunction with Mikisha Herzog.

Being a native of Western Australia and having spent a life time working in the diesel industry, Greg Honisett is superbly credentialed for the position.

“I grew up in Geraldton and spent a lot of my time as a youth going to sea with my uncle who was a professional fisherman,” Greg said.

“Ever since those days, I have spent time on the water and have a natural affinity with boats and boating at all levels. Along the way I owned a heap of ski boats and had lots of fun in the process.”

Greg Honisett is one of a rare breed who has managed to weave his work career and passion together. After a lengthy 25 year stint with a major player in the diesel engine industry, working in a variety of senior management roles, Greg took redundancy with the onset of the GFC.

Next came a role in the trucking industry.

But marine is always where Greg’s expertise and interest lie. “When the position at Power Equipment cropped up, I pursued it vigorously. The Yanmar and JCB brands are first rate. Given my background with diesel products and marine applications, this position could have not been better scripted for me.”

Arriving at Power Equipment, Greg Honisett was not prepared for the pleasant cultural shock that he experienced. Having come from a heavy corporatized company, he found Power Equipment to be a family owned and operated business run by genuinely nice people.

“There’s pressure to perform in every business, but at Power Equipment the pressure is not as intense. It’s a pleasure to come to work and achieve objectives without the feeling of being under the pump from the moment you walk through the front door.”

One of Greg’s biggest tasks has been to become familiar with the product range.

“Yanmar has a completely different marine and industrial range of diesel engines,” Greg said. “Where I came from, the one engine did both jobs. And the mechanical diesel technology that remains in the Yanmar range is a decided benefit when dealing with the customers who still have an affinity with this technology.

In welcoming Greg Honisett to the Power Equipment family, Marine Sales Manager Michael Blair acknowledged the years of experience and expert knowledge that Greg brings to the position.

“Greg has a wealth of experience in the marine and industrial sector,” Michael said. “His background and knowledge of the marketplace is invaluable. We’re already seeing the benefits of having Greg Honisett on board and no doubt in the future, his impact will be even more incisive.”

The notion of a female selling diesel engines to the trade is not one which ever philosophically challenged the management at Power Equipment. All it took was the right person to come along and at the right time... and so now the appointment is official.

Mikisha Herzog has been appointed to the position of salesperson for industrial engines and products in WA. For Mikisha Herzog the rise through the ranks at Power Equipment has culminated in this outstanding achievement.

“When I left school I took up an apprenticeship as a fitter,” Mikisha reflected.

“I always liked the idea of working on heavy equipment. Through my four years as an apprentice, I never saw another female doing the same as me.”

Born and bred in the physically demanding mining town of Karratha WA, Mikisha moved to Perth once she was a qualified fitter and worked on locomotives. But after a few years Mikisha decided that it was time for a change, but she still harboured an affinity with engines.

“I commenced at Power Equipment about three years ago working in the spare parts area and handling internal sales. When the sales position became available at Power Equipment I approached management and applied.”

According to Noel Heritage, Business Manager at Power Equipment, the appointment was an easy one to make.

“We have always admired Mikisha as a person and remain impressed by her achievements at Power Equipment,” Noel Heritage said.

“Her background with the company and our systems, not to mention her product knowledge and technical skills make Mikisha eminently suitable for this role.”

In her new position at Power Equipment, Mikisha is responsible for representing Yanmar and JCB engines to the commercial and industrial OEM markets. This covers applications such as lighting towers, pumping, power generation, high pressure cleaners and so on.

“We’ve got great products in the Yanmar and JCB range,” Mikisha said. “There are some wonderful opportunities to grow with existing customers and at the same time expand into new markets in the mining industry.”

Building your dream boat and watching it slowly materialise must be an amazing feeling. Weipa based Jayson Keogh and his family spent two years working with Gordonvale, North Queensland based boat builder Sure Craft Marine as an eight metre hardtop sports cruiser powered by a 6BY2-260 Yanmar running a Bravo Three X leg was built to their custom specifications.

In Jayson’s words the end result was well worth the wait and the hassles of working with a boat builder some 800kms away from home were long forgotten when “First Priority” was launched. “First Priority” is a purpose built family cruising boat designed to take Jayson, wife Kylie and their two young boys on fishing getaways from their hometown of Weipa on the western side of Cape York Peninsular in Far North Queensland.

Getting a boat of this size over the 800km road that is mainly made up of a corrugated track known as the Peninsula Developmental Road was not Jayson’s ideal way of treating a new boat and trailer so sea transport by the monthly freight landing barge from Cairns was costed. With prices obtained, Jayson then calculated that the cheapest option would be to take it around to Weipa by sea (some 740nm) under its own power and combine the delivery with some fishing and a bunch of mates to share the experience.

A condensed version of Jayson’s adventure is listed below; room does not allow us to detail the many highlights and happenings that an epic trip such as this provides: “Leaving the Cairns harbour on the first morning had us battling a nasty swell straight from the commencement of the journey so the Sure Craft was going to be put through its paces. The maiden voyage was greeted with 30 knot winds and 3 metre swells, reported to be easing slightly further up the coast.” It was late afternoon by the time First Priority tied up on the Cooktown fuel wharf. The vessel took a beating but proved that it was up for the task. That evening we received news that the low to our north was developing into a tropical cyclone but it was far enough away to keep us out of real danger but certainly close enough to make the next few days interesting.

Departing the Endeavour River we were faced with the biggest seas that First Priority had seen up to this point. With windscreen wipers running flat out, we pushed up past Cape Bedford where we had to drain the fuel filters due to a dirty batch of fuel in Cooktown.

Learning from our mistake at Cooktown, we filtered the fuel as we pumped, taking on a full tank to get us to Thursday Island in a couple of days time.

Continuing to the northern tip of Eel Reef we experienced brilliant reef fishing for coral trout and emperor. A rest day was in order as day five was going to be long and hard going as we were to tackle the big seas of Cape York as we pushed on towards Torres Straits.

Next morning, and the push towards Torres Straits was on. After another set of fuel filters, we left the Olive River with the goal of getting to Possession Island just past the tip of Cape York before sunset. The

FIRST PRIORITY –

closer we got to the tip of Cape York, the bigger the sea became and the harder the Yanmar powered Sure Craft had to work. Still navigating by chart, we weaved our way through shallow reefs, big seas and a long day of holding tight as First Priority ploughed her way through what resembled a washing machine.

Day 6 - our last day was all about refuelling at Thursday Island and motoring down the western side of Cape York Peninsula as we headed home to Weipa.

First Priority was now able to cruise on 26 knots as we enjoyed the view of the west coast, heading towards Weipa. The finish to an amazing week spent with good mates aboard, and what we confirmed to be a very safe and comfortable vessel.”

First Priority has now been based in Weipa for 19 months and has since done many short and long trips out from their home base where Jayson and his family have made the most out of achieving their dream boat whose name says it all.

Bathurst is an extremely comfortable, practicable and sophisticated 15.2M Pacific Explorer model displaning Power Catamaran purpose designed and built by Brisbane based Peter Brady at Pacific Power Cats Pty Ltd for ACP Fishing Pty Ltd.

She operates out of Darwin as a corporate entertainment and day sports fishing charter vessel for up to 18 guests or as a long range adventure cruiser for up to eight guests, exploring the Top End with estuary and river fishing a speciality.

Bathurst combines speed and range with the ability to be self sufficient for long periods of time in a way that only this type of vessel can.

Bathurst is constructed to the USL Code from infused epoxy composite with foam cores and is powered by 2 Yanmar 6LY3A-STP 440mhp (324kw) at 3300rpm electronic propulsion engines close coupled to Yanmar KMH61A marine gear with 2.43:1 ratio. Propellers are 25” x 26” x 4 blade and the vessel weight fully loaded is 21.5 ton.

She achieved 26.5 knots fully loaded and cruises at 15 to 17 knots right on the peak of the engines 1200Nm torque and in turn equates to a very reasonable 56 – 72 l/hr fuel consumption. An impressive result when you consider that the vessel achieved these figures with 17 passengers, 2860 litres of fuel, 600 litres of water and a 4.2M tender onboard.

Bathurst is set up to carry her 3 x 4.2M tenders when in long range charter mode and carry 300 litres of outboard fuel in an external tank aft of the fly-bridge protected by the tender cradles. Bathurst’s accommodation includes berths for the skipper and crew on the fly-bridge, two bridge deck level cabins forward with beds that split from two singles or combine into a queen size double with another clip on single berth that can be fitted should the charter type require it. Mid ship there is a third double bedroom to port with workshop and spare toilet to starboard. The main bathroom is forward of the fly-bridge stairs at deck level with a Vacuflush toilet, domestic size shower and vanity plus washing machine and dryer tucked under the stairs.

As you would expect on a charter sports fishing boat the

fisherman is well catered for

with game poles for trolling, multiple rod holders and large secure rod lockers that flank either side of the covered fly-bridge stairs.

Bathurst motored the 2900 NM delivery trip from Brisbane to Darwin with no mechanical problems being experienced. Designer Peter Brady was on the delivery trip from Brisbane as far as Cairns and described “Bathurst’s” performance as very satisfying, particularly given she was fully loaded with spares, 7 crew and 3 x 4.2mtr tenders. It was a genuine test of all the vessels operating systems from steaming at 20knots through a rough first night off Fraser Island right down to repeated launches and retrievals of the tenders.
