Who can you ask?Front Office HBS
PrefaceDear student,Welcome to Saxion’s Hospitality Business School (HBS)!
You are about to start your studies at HBS – the start of a fantastic
adventure, but also potentially a little overwhelming. You will notice
that Saxion is a large and complex organisation which can sometimes
be difficult in finding your way around. This Survival Guide is intended
to help you, so that you can make a good start and feel at home as soon
as possible. Alongside practical information, this Survival Guide also
contains testimonials and tips from our students.
During the first few weeks of your studies, you will receive a lot of
information, not all of which you are expected to memorise. It is
therefore a good idea to keep this Survival Guide with you at all times,
so that you can look up the necessary information when required. If
you have any further questions after reading this guide, you can ask
your study career counsellor, your lecturers or the HBS Front Office
staff. They are there to help you whenever necessary, so please do not
hesitate to contact them if you have any questions.
We wish you every success with your studies!
Warm regards,
Jolande Algra-Zomer and Derk Blijleven

About the schoolSaxion’s Hospitality Business School (HBS) offers programmes in both
Apeldoorn and Deventer. From this academic year (2016 – 2017) forward,
Saxion will be housed in the former “Nettenfabriek” in Apeldoorn, a completely
renovated factory. The main advantage for students and staff is that this new
building is located right next door to the railway station. In Deventer, you will
find us on the second floor of the A and B wing of our Handelskade building.
This building is also within walking distance of the railway station.
The HBS’ Bachelor programmes in Deventer include Facility Management (FM),
Tourism Management in Dutch (HTRO) and Tourism Management in English
(TM). Apeldoorn is home to the Bachelor programme Hotel Management
(HM), which is offered in both Dutch and English. All these programmes have
one important factor in common: hospitality.
HBS employs around 160 staff members, who will be happy to help you. For
help and supervision during your studies, you can not only contact your study
career counsellor and your lecturers, but also the HBS Front Office staff.
During your studies at HBS, you will learn to look beyond borders. Out of
around 2,000 Bachelor students, about 72% graduate with the experience
of having spent time abroad. You can go abroad as part of your internship,
a “study abroad”, or to write your thesis. You will find more information
elsewhere in this Survival Guide. Additionally, the HBS teaches students from
all over the world, so you will learn to work alongside people with different
nationalities during your classes and lectures at Saxion.

You can turn to HBS Front Office with all of your questions.
If your question cannot be answered directly, you will
be referred to the right department or contact person.
The Front Office also deals with reservations of audio
and video (AV) materials, HBS meeting rooms and other
related matters. The HBS Front Office has a desk in both
Deventer in B wing —on second floor — and Apeldoorn
— in the main hall— and is open every day.
Administration OfficeThe HBS Front Office is part of the Administration Office
department. This department ensures all supporting
processes and procedures run smoothly. It closely co-
operates with lecturers. The Administration Office is the
first point of contact for administrative issues. In addition,
it organises a number of events and activities, e.g. Saxion
open days, an experience day, student for one day, intro
weeks and graduation ceremonies. It also maintains
close ties with several other Saxion departments, such as
Scheduling and Timetabling.

School CouncilThe School Council links the Saxion Foundation, the
HBS management team, students and staff. Ideally,
the council consists of five staff and five students
who strive to generate broad support for the school’s
policies.
The School Council supports the management
team and issues advice to guarantee the quality of
teaching and improve the organisation. If you as a
student encounter matters that you feel the School
Council should know about or help you with, please
go to: MySaxion > My study.
Complaints Policy (ASK)If you have a complaint that the Examination Board
is unable to deal with, you can use the school’s
procedure for student complaints (ASK).
HBS’s study career counsellor is always the first point
of contact for complaints. You can then make a formal
complaint on the basis of the ASK if required.
For more information about the complaints policy, go
to: MySaxion > My Study.
Programme CommitteeEach programme has its own Programme Committee.
This committee is comprised of an even number of
members, half of them students. It forms a direct link
between the programme’s lecturers and students (or
their representatives), so that ideas, developments
and any complaints can be discussed and dealt with
quickly and efficiently.
By consequence, the members of the Programme
Committee help inform the school’s administrative
regulations. You can find more information about the
Programme Committee, as well as the minutes of its
meetings, on: MySaxion > My Study.

Dear new Saxion student,
My name is Stanislava and currently I
am a fourth-year student of Tourism
Management. I remember visiting many
Saxion open days and going through many
different programmes to find the right one,
and guess what, once I heard about the
HBS programmes. I immediately felt that
HBS was just my place to be! The teachers,
students and staff that I have met have
shown me what real hospitality is.
During my study
First year: learning about the hospitality industry and
about yourself
When I started the Tourism Management programme, I
thought it would be all about travelling. Fortunately, it is
not! You learn so much more: not only about the hospitality
industry, but also about yourself. You experience life in a
complete different way. I have to admit the first year is very
stressfull.
I know, it can be overwhelming at first. Just do your best is
the best advice I can give you. In the end it all works out.
Try to pass the main phase of your programme - then you
can keep on fighting through the rest!
Second year: becoming an entrepreneur
Becoming a real entrepreneur in the second year will help
you not only to get your finances in order during your first
internship, but will also prepare you for your internship!
Luckily, Our Saxion World (www.oursaxionworld.com) has
many companies for you, so find the best one!
Of course, it is not always fun at school – be prepared for
some difficulties and just be open and talk about it. You
always have your study career counsellor or any other HBS
lecturer who will listen and try to help and advise you!

Tips & Tricks
My last advice would be: enjoy! Enjoy those lovely study
trips, getting to know your classmates while writing many
reports. Maybe about Paris, but maybe some place else
like Saint Petersburg, Lisbon, Valencia… There are many
possibilities, so grab them! Enjoy the different events you
either organise or take part in. Be social in and out of
school - when working in the hospitality industry, every
new contact is a bonus! Enjoy your time as a student in
Deventer and in the Netherlands, with your classmates,
with your new friends, with whoever, as long as you enjoy
it - because believe me: it goes way too fast!
Best wishes and lots of luck in the coming four years,
StanislavaEd

My interest in the hospitality industry
started when I was little. At parties I was
always the one who took care of the guests
and entertained them. I really enjoyed
making people feel at ease. When I was 16, I
already served guests in restaurants during
birthdays and weddings. I like to be in
charge and organise all kinds of events, so
the Hotel Management degree programme
was perfect for me.
HOTEL MANAGEMENT
During my studiesFirst year: learning about teamwork,
the basics and yourself
The mix between theory and putting theory into practice
is the unique selling point of the Hotel Management
programme. From day one everything is in English. The
first week, I thought I had made a huge mistake! My advice:
keep going and be confident about yourself. I am pretty
sure that you will get used to the language, just like I
did. The first year, modules are mostly about the basics
of the industry, finance and communication. The “Events”
module is very time-consuming, but I learned a lot about
teamwork, myself and others.
Second year: my first internship
In the second year, you have your first internship. Like most
students, I went abroad: to France, my favourite country.
The internship itself was not very interesting in terms
of assignments. However, I learned to be independent
in these five months. Furthermore, I enjoyed the French
lifestyle, learned the language and gained some cultural
experience. I joined the French scouts and went to a sports
club. Overall it was a wonderful experience!
Third year: preparation for my thesis
My third year started with a semester of strategic planning.
The second semester was the HBS semester with some
elective modules, which are a good preparation for your
thesis. At the moment I am busy finding an interesting
management internship in the Netherlands. I am excited
to go back to work after all these years of studying. I just
cannot wait to explore my options in the field of hospitality!

Tips & Tricks
Do as much as you can to get work experience in the field.
I am still running my waitress company, tutoring students
who need help with several high school courses, I work for
a hospitality agency and I promote the programme during
open days. An important tip is to go and work for Saxion.
They have several vacancies for student assistants. This
way you can learn a lot and boost your CV. Last but not
least: try to enjoy your time at Saxion!
Together, we make the world a little
more hospitable.

Personalised study counselling
Do you have any questions which your study career coach cannot answer, do you
need specific expertise or would you prefer to discuss a matter with someone who is
further removed from your degree programme and the school? If so, your study career
coach can help to refer you (this is usually organised by the Student Desk in the main
building). To learn more about what a study career coach can do for you, see page 17.
Your study career coach is your first point of contact within your degree programme and provides coaching that is tailored to your personal needs.
17
Your study career coach guides
and supports you throughout your
degree programme. The aim is to
help you develop the skills you need
both during your time at Saxion and
in your future career. You will meet
your study career coach right at the
start of your degree programme, and
you will have regular contact with
him/her throughout the academic
year, both individually and together
with your fellow students.
Study careercounselling andcoaching
Study progressIdeally you will complete your studies without too much
delay, which is why your study progress is a regular topic
of discussion.
From start to finishIn the first year, the main focus will be on learning how
to study, and how to plan your learning activities, on self-
reflection and on your competencies. You will explore
whether your talents match the skills that are required, both
for your degree programme and for your intended career.
The focus will subsequently shift to the practical aspects of
your future career. You will gain valuable insights during
your internship in the third year, and the fourth year will
revolve around your final assignment.
A listening earIf you face any study-related or personal problems that could
affect your study performance, your study career coach
will provide a listening ear. They might suggest one of the
training courses offered by the Study Success Centre, or
they may refer you to the dean or the student counsellor for
further support.

ResponsibilityThe tasks and responsibilities of the Examination Board
have been described in the Education and Examination
Regulations (EER). These affect all students at the school.
The Examination Board’s main responsibility is to ensure
the quality of the exams and examinations. It also enforces
the EER. This is a set of guidelines which apply not only to
all students, but also to all lecturers and management staff.
When should you contact the Examination Board? You should contact the Examination Board if you feel you
have been treated unfairly as a student when registering
for an exam or during an assessment and you are unable to
resolve the dispute with the lecturer involved on your own.
You can then register a complaint with the Examination
Board. The Board will decide whether your complaint
is valid. You should also ask the Examination Board for
permission if you want to take a free minor or change your
study contract.
Quality of examsFurthermore, the Examination Board constantly strives to
ensure the quality of the exams. This does not concern the
content of the exams, but rather their technical quality.
About the EEREER: Education and Examination Regulations Each programme has its own EER. This outlines all the rules
and regulations for the programme regarding teaching,
assessment and examination. These rules and regulations
govern the following:
• Objective and structure of the programme
• Study career counselling and study advice
(including negative and binding study advice)
• Exam information and registering for exams
• Assessing and announcing exam and examination results
• Awarding exemptions
• Composition and competences of the Examination Board
The EER can be found on MySaxion.nl > My Study

National Student Survey (NSE)
The NSE is a national annual survey that allows tens of
thousands of students to have their say about their studies.
The outcomes of the survey help us improve the quality of
your programme. They also determine the ranking of your
programme compared to similar programmes at other insti-
tutions. This ranking is not only important for new students
looking for the right programme, but also for businesses
wanting to investigate the educational background of their
applicants. The NSE assessment is therefore vital for the pre-
sent as well as the future. The NSE takes place around Febru-
ary each year.

Student associations link students to
programmes and future employees. Besides
organising cool parties and events to build
up your network, they organise workshops
and presentations as well. By joining a
student association, you will be able to get
to know more people inside or outside of
Saxion. Get the most out of student life and
join Promaître.
Promaître plays a very active role within
HBS. Students as well as lecturers are
closely involved in all activities. Promaître
is also involved in developments within
HBS or developments in regard to the HM
programmes offered.
At HBS our students are themost important. Therefore, we proudly
present to you our student association Promaître.
Student association
21
Promaître student associationPromaître is the student association for students from both
the Dutch and English Hotel Management (HM) programmes at
the Hospitality Business School. The association has six board
members, who are themselves students. The composition of
the board changes annually.
HM student associationThe name “Promaître” means “for/the promise of hospitality”
and we do our best to live up to that! Our aim is to bring
students together and create a close-knit community by
organising study-related activities as well as drinks and
parties. Promaître is proud to introduce you to a lot of people
in a relaxed setting, allowing you to swap stories about
school, work, living away from your parents, etc.
Parties, drinks, workshops and tutoringDuring the academic year, we organise a range of different
events, such as the intro week, the Food Gala, the Summer
Jam, food tastings, workshops, monthly drinks and last but
not least: some outstanding parties! We also provide tutoring
to those students who need it. We announce our calendar at
the beginning of the academic year, so that you always know
exactly which activities will take place at any given time.
Advantages of the Promaître student associationNote that Promaître is a student association, not a student
union - there is no hazing (initiation ritual) and everyone is
welcome! Furthermore, we maintain close ties with both
Saxion and entrepreneurs in and around Apeldoorn and we
would be happy to put you in touch with them. We consider
it of great importance to be the connecting factor between
students, lecturers and the professional field.
Where to find usYou can find us in the former “Nettenfabriek” in Apeldoorn.
Obviously, you can also contact us by sending an email to
[email protected] or speak to one of us in person!

Printing, copyingand scanning As a Saxion student, you can make use of the so-called
‘multifunctionals’ which are printers, photocopiers
and scanners in one. You have to pay for printing and
copying but scanning is free. In addition to printers
that print in black and white only, there are also colour
printers. For the latest details, see MySaxion > search
for printing. This provides information about where
the printers are located and the payment system.
Tip: If you want to produce a poster or print and bind
a copy of your report, visit the print service shop –
either online (printservice.saxion.nl) or in person at
one of the main Saxion locations.
FabLab Enschede
Do you have a great idea for a project? Would you
like to print a 3D prototype? The FabLab in the Edith
Stein building is a public laboratory, accessible to
everyone.
You can develop your own idea, design or prototype
using 3D scanners and printers, a laser cutter or
a vinyl foil cutter. We also have several computers
with design software that you can use. Come and
take a look inside the FabLab.

Tips:• Save the Saxion alarm number (+31 (0)88 - 537
6333) in your phone so that you always have it
close at hand!
• Setting up emergency contact information:
iPhone
Add your emergency contacts to your Medical
ID (can be found in the Health app)
Android
Go to Contacts > Groups > ICE - Emergency
Contacts and add your contacts.
Emergency assistanceand safety
What should you do in case of
emergency?
Saxion pays a lot of attention to safety and emergency
assistance. There is a special alarm number for all of
Saxion’s locations:
+31 (0)88 - 537 6333
In case of an emergency at Saxion, it’s important
that you always call this number and not 112
(general emergency number of The Netherlands).
The internal emergency response team (BHV) will
be mobilised immediately after your call. The BHV
team calls 112 and provides first aid assistance
until the external emergency services arrive.
Signs containing instructions on ‘What should you
do in case of emergency’ are hanging in all Saxion
buildings. In each area, there is a yellow sign
showing what to do in the case of a fire, accident
or evacuation. Next to each fire hose, there is a
map showing which emergency exit you should use
in the case of an evacuation. If it is necessary to
evacuate the building, an alarm will sound and you
should follow all further instructions.

HBS offers several opportunities to study abroad. For
instance, you could take an English language minor at the
school, complete your internship or write your thesis (final
year project) abroad, or take a minor (‘study abroad’) at an
overseas institution.
Minor ‘Expedition Service Design’‘Expedition Service Design’ is a semester in which students collaborate in
multidisciplinary teams. These teams design innovative solutions which contribute
to a more hospitable society. Global citizenship, hospitality, creative technology
and service design are applied in projects that will deliver service prototypes for
particular end users. Projects are relevant locally as well as globally. The field
research, which takes place in the second term of the Expedition semester, may
take place abroad, in locations inside and outside of Europe.
Minor ‘Doing Business with China’Today’s business world knows no borders. It is dynamic and technically demanding.
Between European and Asian countries, co-operation as well as competition is
rapidly increasing. In this global business environment, where cultural, economic

Study orinternship abroad
Study or internship abroad
Study abroadAs part of your minor, you can opt for a ‘study abroad’.
This means spending half a year (one semester) at a partner
university overseas. HBS has several partner universities in
countries including France, Austria, Spain, Finland, China,
Japan and Indonesia. Details of all partner universities can
be found on Our Saxion World.
Thesis (final year project) abroadIf you want to write your thesis (final year project) abroad,
you can search the HBS selection on Our Saxion World or
find an organisation yourself, where you can complete
your final year project. You should then submit a proposal
for approval. For your thesis, the organisation does not
matter as much as the level of your research or whether it
is hospitality-oriented.
ConclusionStart gathering information well in advance, so that you can
make the right choice. Ask your study career counsellor
(SLB) for advice. Are you curious to find out how other
students have tackled this? Turn to the next page for a
number of student testimonials.

and political differences are huge, an agile, reflective,
critical, and entrepreneurial attitude is essential in
conducting business successfully. In this minor, you will
acquire knowledge and skills to conduct business in China
with confidence. It will also enable you to benefit from the
opportunities China offers in Europe.
Internship abroadYou can complete an internship abroad as early as your second
year (first internship) or complete one as part of your minor
(management internship). Be sure to visit Saxion’s digital
platform “Our Saxion World”, which provides an overview of
both national and international organisations (HBS partners)
that meet HBS requirements. These organisations are
assigned to various accounts, which are managed by account
managers: lecturers who maintain relationships with the
professional field alongside their teaching duties.
The account managers for the Netherlands operate in
different segments. The international account managers
operate in different countries/areas. They are employed by
the External Relations department, which not only supervises
the account managers, but also occupies itself with student
enrolment, registration and administration.

Name: Els Wegerif, Hotel Management alumna
Experience: Minor ‘Expedition Service Design’
The Expedition took me on a voyage of discovery through
our society. What is the state of the world around me? Are
there opportunities for me to make at least a part of our
society more hospitable? How do I do this? I tackled these
questions in collaboration with creative students from
other programmes. Not only did I develop my knowledge,
but also skills such as reading, writing, analysing and
reflecting. I learned so much without even realising it, and
managed to make a contribution to a part of our beautiful
society in the process. A real odyssey!
Name: Ivar Neelis, HTRO student
Experience: Internship in Hong Kong, China
The action-packed city of Hong Kong offers the Asian
street life, as well as beaches, mountains to climb,
beautiful natural and urban scenery, a buzzing nightlife,
exciting food to try and it is easy to get to the most exotic
places on earth within a few hours. Besides that, it is easy
to stand out from the crowd to potentially broaden your
international network.
Working here can be tough sometimes due to the long
working hours and hierarchical structure. If you are willing
to adapt, you can learn a lot: about work, about other
cultures, and mostly about yourself.
Name: Renske Otte and Bente Marquering,
Facility Management students
Experience: Study abroad in Kajaani, Finland
We are having an amazing time in Finland. We have met so
many people from different countries, which makes it so
great. We have been here for longer than a month now, but
it feels so much shorter. Time flies. Bente chose different
sport courses and Renske chose international business
courses. Both of us think the courses are not very difficult,
but we still learn a lot.
Our accommodation is perfect. We live on the campus, one
minute’s walk from the school. We live with a Japanese,
German and Spanish girl. The best thing is that all the
exchange students live on the campus, which means we
have a lot of fun with everyone. At the moment, there are
around 60 exchange students in Kajaani.
Name: Lisette de Lange, HTRO student
Experience: Thesis (final year project) within
own company
Right now I am graduating from my HTRO programme in
Deventer. I am completing my final year project within
my own company, which I founded as part of a start-up
trajectory. I started my final year project while I was on
this trajectory. It is a great combination: I can write my
thesis as well as approach customers and prepare orders.
The downside of this combination is that I am busier than
I would be if I were only working on my research, but
fortunately I am well supervised by both the school and the
start-up trajectory. I chose this option because it suits my
personality. It is important that you find a final year project
that appeals to you, otherwise the process becomes long
and strenuous. Good luck with choosing a topic!
Name: Marlou Oude Weernink,
Facility Management student
Experience: Thesis (final year project) at a care home in
Vriezenveen (municipality of Twenterand)
Right now I am graduating as part of an interdisciplinary
team at De Vriezenhof. This is a care home in Vriezenveen
(municipality of Twenterand). “Collaboration between
disciplines” in this case means working with professionals
from the business community, but also with students from
different programmes. We learn a lot from each other,
because we are sharing our experiences and knowledge
and working as a unit in order to achieve the best outcome.
The best thing about working on this project is that
everyone is motivated and we can lay the foundations
for what we hope will be a great future. Furthermore, the
client has given us the opportunity to put our own personal
stamp on the project, as long as we stick to the framework.
In short, it is quite a challenge but I am enjoying my work.
At HBS, there are various different ways of completing a
final year project. If you are finding it difficult to find a
project that suits you, lecturers will always be there to
help. Additionally, you benefit from personal supervision
during the graduation process, you receive feedback and
there is always a chance to ask questions.
