People HOPE to put strife aside…they HOPE that things will be better. “So here's my lifelong wish..My grown up Christmas list…Not for myself but for a world in need… No more lives torn apart…That wars would never start…And time would heal all hearts… And everyone would have a friend…And right would always win…And love would never end… This is my grown up Christmas list…” Amy Grant There are many studies that link our human nature to being either “me- focused” or “other-focused” individuals. Preparing for the arrival of Baby Jesus brings us to our knees for many reasons, but maybe the main reason is that babies, in their extreme helplessness, force us to focus on those other than ourselves. God certainly knew what He was doing when the Incarnation was defined through the eyes of a baby. Studies indicate that this baby brings us to empathy, which is the capacity to sense the distress of others and be moved by it, even so much as to act to help or protect them. That may be a reason people FEEL the need to give during the Christmas season. https://borgenproject.org/psychology-giving-towards- poverty/ At the end of the day, we’re told many times that happiness isn’t wrapped up in the ostentatious gifts we give or the amount of money that we spend. As the widow in scripture portrays so well, giving when we have nothing to give leads to redemption itself: Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please…It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size.. Could you hurry, sir, daddy says there's not much time…You see she's been sick for quite a while.. And I know these shoes would make her smile…And I want her to look beautiful if mama meets Jesus tonight. The Christmas Shoes by Newsong As we prepare for the greatest gift that the world has ever known, let’s get inspired by music and “Happiness Boosts” that focus on others…let’s start by putting those phones down and truly being present to people. https://www.happify.com/hd/5-easiest-ways-to-give-others-a-happiness-boost/...we’ll .. May we all find this time of Advent a true time of reflection and preparation to become the new people that God wants us to be. In Him, Elaine Schad, ICCS Principal

Dear Parents,
I love country music…I love progressive Christian music…I love Celtic music…..Since we don’t purchase cable
out in the country where I live (AND I’m living to tell about it!! ), we actually watch very little television, BUT I’m pretty
excited that Garth Brooks will be on primetime this Sunday live from Notre Dame Stadium!
The reasons I love those three types of music specifically are that I can actually hear
the words of the song, and generally those genres of music are types that generally keep my
spirits lifted. Studies in music psychology seem to back up my personal actions. “As it turns
out, the emotions evoked by music don’t just feel good — they’re healthy for you, too.
A meta-analysis of 400 music studies found that listening to music has the ability to
reduce anxiety, fight depression and boost the immune system.”
IDEA As we prepare for the season of Advent, why not pick a special place in the house to set up the Nativity Scene?
This can be a family decision making the REAL meaning of Christmas the focus rather than the tree. Make a
special time just to set up the Nativity, making it special with hot cocoa and cookies to follow. Perhaps JUST do
that on an evening and save the rest of the decorating for another time, stressing the fact that it is special. YOU
create the traditions your children will remember and pass on to their children! God bless, (from Mr. Cuttica)
Gift What’s RIGHT Not What’s Popular Dean’s Dispatch - December 2018
I know I sometimes sound like a broken record, but when I feel strongly about
something I just won’t give up! As parents and grandparents we need to take a
firm stand and do what is right for our children and grandchildren. The media
pushes toys, games, and electronics that are NOT appropriate for developing
children. Over the many years I’ve been an educator, I have seen a noticeable
decline with children’s interpersonal relationships, communication, and problem
solving. The constant use of electronics has
created a generation without the skills
necessary to communicate in the workforce.
It saddens me to see families all on their devices at restaurants with no
interaction at all. It may be the ranting of an old man, but I am frightened for
the future of our children and grandchildren.
We can start by not gifting the popular electronic games for Christmas, but
by purchasing wholesome items that develop the mind, strategies, and
communication. There are so many wonderful board games that are available
such as Life, Scrabble, Battleship, Chess,
Clue, etc. Look for toys that encourage
creativity such as erector sets, models to
assemble, puzzles, building sets, etc. Try to
find toys for little ones that make them use
their imagination, cars and trucks that THEY
make the sounds for; not that do it for them.
Gifts that encourage imaginative play such as dress up outfits, farm sets, zoo
animals, and doctor kits are appropriate. Of course books that encourage good
reading habits are always a good choice. Think of looking at the classics at the
bookstore! How about a gift of tickets to a museum, live performance, the
orchestra or ballet? Why not a “coupon” for a fishing trip with grandpa, or making a meal with grandma? Be
creative and be original!
It’s a hectic and busy time of year with so much outside pressure from the media. Please remember to get what
is RIGHT and not what is just popular! We love our children and grandchildren and want them to develop into
adults that communicate, have integrity, values, and a deep faith in God. Keep that in mind while shopping this
Christmas season!
God bless you all and have a blessed Christmas!

Cecy Miranda
