PAYING FOR CARRIER BAGS

What an eventful year 2014 was for us all! With the ever growing need to cut down our waste and improve environmental performance, it is clear that individuals are now taking on the challenge of reducing their environmental impact seriously and it is evident that even small changes in behaviour can be of significant value. However, one major challenge that has been raised is the limited ability to measure the results and achievements from our environmental initiatives or to realistically compare the value of one approach to another. Is it more environmentally friendly to macerate foodstuffs offshore and dump in the ocean or ship it to shore for disposal? Are the savings from our waste disposal charges actually stacking up against the increased cost of using compostable packaging? The impact of our environmental choices can be very subjective and without doubt it is not just down to cost in hard cash but also the ultimate cost to our environment. Nevertheless sometimes the best way to engage those who can influence, is to put things into perspective with hard cash costs. A recent case study highlighted that a simple change in behaviour would cut the cost of the provision of coveralls by £10,000 every month. An amount sufficient to give away a new eco friendly car for free every month or provide free solar energy panels for around 15 homes every year to power them forever! With such compelling facts it is a no-brainer to get on the environmental program and start saving.

In our personal and business or corporate lives there is always a trade off between what we would ideally like to achieve and what we can afford to achieve. It is natural for me with my background to want to see the numbers, the facts! Be able to analyse the best approach. This is reflected in my work role where statistics or metrics can provide the key to such daily conundrums. What organisation would not welcome the tools to demonstrate with hard numbers that they are minimising their environmental impact with the added bonus of vastly improving their public image? In the corporate world the correct environmental metrics can offer a very effective platform for engagement of all, raising the profile and performance of environmental responsibilities throughout the entire organisation, from office services right through to senior stakeholders. Whilst we might struggle to establish in hard numbers how many critters we have saved by changing our plastic cups to compostable ones we definitely have scope to obtain the ammunition needed to convert the non-believers. And thus with the welcome arrival of a new year and with the health of your environment in mind; consider for a moment, your groans of disapproval when you are asked to pay for your carrier bag.
