Foodnet Meals on Wheels 2018 Annual Report
2
2018 represents a year of strength, resiliency, and growth at Foodnet Meals on Wheels. We delivered confidence, independence, and peace-of-mind to our older adult community in very meaningful ways. Over the course of the year, we delivered over 170,000 meals. This is a 3% increase in program participation compared to 2017, and we expect the demand for services to continue to grow.
Our services combat some of the biggest threats to healthy aging: hunger, isolation, and loss of independence. Our dedicated staff, board of directors, and volunteers make anything feel possible when it comes to carrying out Foodnet’s mission and vision. It is an honor to work with a talented team that is willing to move mountains and stretch beyond the limits to ensure the continuation of quality meal delivery and nutrition services.
For so many that we serve, the human connection part of our work is equally as important as the meal. We are all wired for human contact. It may be hard to believe, but studies show that without social contact, individuals exhibit higher levels of stress, depression, and increased vulnerability to negative health outcomes. We believe our services play an important role in helping our seniors cope with social isolation and loneliness. Our team connects with our participants; we listen to stories; we hold hands during grief; and we celebrate legacies.
We have so many accomplishments to celebrate this year. We launched our choice menu program, which broadens our menu choices and provides a variety of new meal options for our participants. We created new partnerships with diverse community organizations and businesses to build critical community linkages for our older adult neighbors. We raised awareness about senior hunger and malnutrition and generated funding through our successful Mac ‘n Cheese Bowl, community grants, business sponsorships, and generous individual gifts. We also engaged in an impact and sustainability planning effort that will position the organization for its next level of success. Each day, our team feels honored to reach those in our community that need us the most. We thank you for your continued confidence in our work. With our community, partners, and collaborators behind our work, we remind our older adult neighbors that they are valued.

Home Delivered Meals Program
Foodnet Meals on Wheels delivers nearly 700 daily meals to more than 400 older adults and others
in need in Tompkins County. Each meal is delivered with a safety check, a friendly visit, and
compassion. Foodnet is the only home delivered meals program that provides face-to-face contact
and hot ready-to-eat meals five days per week. Sandwich, holiday, and weekend meals are available
to our clients as a supplemental service. All of our meals are nutritionally certified by our registered
dietitian and are prepared fresh in Foodnet’s kitchen each day. In 2018, we delivered meals to 595
individuals in the community.
Program Highlights
Congregate Meals Program
The congregate meals program serves mobile older adults along the continuum of need. Older
adults can enjoy a social dining experience at Titus Towers, Center Village Court (Groton), or at the
YMCA on Thursdays. Social dining provides opportunity for meaningful friendships, and volunteer
opportunities. Community programming, nutrition counseling and education are available monthly
in each dining room. In 2018, we served congregate meals to 233 clients in our social dining rooms.
Comprehensive Nutrition Services
Foodnet’s registered dietitian provides nutrition assessment, counseling, education and referral
coordination. In-home assessments include a comprehensive social history, a nutritional risk
assessment, and service coordination. Our registered dietitian works with each of our clients to
provide individualized nutrition counseling, guidance, and instruction. Nutrition education is
provided monthly. In 2018, the dietitian provided 488 nutrition
counseling hours.

My name is Betty. I am 70 years old, and I never thought it would happen to me. I want to buy my own food, but I can’t drive to the grocery store and I can’t stand long enough to prepare a meal. I was hospitalized because I broke my hip, and then I developed pneumonia. My recovery has taken a long time, and when I returned to my home I found that I needed help. I was able to walk around with a walker and do simple household tasks, but I couldn’t drive and I wasn’t up to cooking for myself. Since my fall, I found that I worried all the time that it will happen again, and that no one would be here to help me. My doctor told me that nutritious meals was one of the keys to my recovery and suggested Foodnet Meals on Wheels. Each day my Foodnet driver delivers my meal right to my door with a smile and makes sure that I’m doing alright. The hot meal and friendly visit with the driver is something to look forward to each day. The weekend meals are easy to reheat in my microwave, and the sandwiches make a great snack later in the evening. I also get to meet with Foodnet’s dietitian. She suggested a personal emergency response system because of my recent fall and made the phone calls to get it set up. I don’t know if I will always need these services, but for now I know that I am not alone.

Program Innovations
With support from Triad Foundation and an anonymous gift,
Foodnet Meals on Wheels launched a choice menu system with new
client database software designed for meals-on-wheels programming.
This system offers clients a choice between two healthy entrées in
advance of delivery. The software also tracks meal preferences,
delivery schedules, program data, and route optimization.
10
Community Learning
Cornell Operations Research Engineering Industry graduate students
conducted a route optimization and meal packing efficiency study.
The results informed our impact and sustainability plan.
We value interprofessional collaboration and learning.
Foodnet hosted interns Danielle Klein (left) from Binghamton’s Master’s
in Social Work program, and Cecilia Hagan (right) from Cornell
University’s Dietetic Internship Program.
“ I am so grateful that I had the Foodnet team to guide me through my first year in my Master’s in Social Work program. I have endless respect
for the services that Foodnet provides to this community. I not only learned more about the social work role, but I also learned about
leadership and organizational culture.” — Danielle Klein, 2019 MSW Intern

“When people hear I am connected to
Foodnet Meals on Wheels, they tell me that
although the meals were the reason they
signed up for Foodnet for their loved one, the
daily friendly visit and safety check are at
least as important as the food. Both factors
give caregivers and relatives peace of mind,
and how much is peace of mind worth?
