[email protected]Issue 7 (June 2016) FOODIE Newsletter FOODIE Team's corner Dear Members of FOODIE Community, FOODIE project has entered in the last year of its schedule. This seventh issue covers the period from March 2016 to June 2016 and gives evidence of the more mature technical results and progress in pilot sites. In addition, you are provided with an overview of the upcoming events and a brief summary of the past events where the FOODIE Team presented the project. We hope you find the information interesting! ABOUT FOODIE FOODIE project is a co-funded research project funded under the ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP) by European Commission. FOODIE project aims at building an open and interoperable agricultural specialized platform hub on the cloud for the management of spatial and non-spatial agriculture related data from heterogeneous sources. FOODIE platform represents a new innovative solution for different user needs; FOODIE can provide a marketplace where data can be discovered and exchanged but also external companies can publish their own agricultural applications based on the data, services and applications. The objectives and achievements of the project have been demonstrated in three different pilot scenarios across Europe: Pilot 1 : Precision Viticulture (Spain). Pilot 2 : Open Data for Strategic and Tactical planning (Czech Republic). Pilot 3 : Technology allows integration of logistics via service providers and farm management including traceability (Germany). PILOT EXECUTION PROGRESS Spanish Pilot The Spanish Pilot continues its development regarding the use of precision viticulture with the aid of the Information and communications technologies. The deployment of all agro-meteorological stations and their integration in the FOODIE platform is providing near-real time data about the agro-climatic conditions. It allows Terras Gauda taking full advantage of the dashboard developed in FOODIE for planning agricultural interventions based on the conditions of the vineyard. In addition, the dashboard provides indicators for health and hydric stress of the grapes which are obtained processing satellite imagery. It allows taking decisions about site-specific interventions such as fertilization or irrigation. The help of the mobile App is also remarkable for the work in the vineyard. It is easy to register geo-located annotations and issues and counts with a notification system for receiving alerts, for instance, regarding outbreaks of grapevine diseases. On the other hand, the harvesting season will arrive in a few months and early grape yield prediction is crucial. It allows winegrowers to make decisions concerning logistics and consider alternative grape providers in order to maintain the expected wine production. Yield prediction is also valuable as an indicator for the quality of the final product, managed by means of agricultural practices for controlling the vigor of the vines.

21 April 2016, Vienna, Austria. The EGU General Assembly 2016 was a great success with 4,863 oral, 10,320 poster,
and 947 PICO presentations. 619 unique scientific sessions together with 321 side events created an interesting
programme. At the conference 13,650 scientists from 109 countries participated, of which 25% were students and
53% early career scientists (under the age of 35 years), 15,000 copies of EGU Today distributed, keen media presence
and reporting, and thousands of visits to the webstreams as well as to the EGU blog GeoLog.
FOODIE project was presented by Tomas Reznik from Wirelessinfo at the Poster section with an oral demonstration.
FOODIE at 'the Future of Farming Smart Agriculture i a co petiti e orld’ 28 April 2016, Brussels, Belgium. The event pointed out the current and future situation of the agricultural sector.
Philip Hogan, the EU Commissioner of Agriculture and Rural Development discussed together with a panel of experts
from NGO, public and private sector about new technologies and methods in agri-food sector to boost productivity
and to increase profit. The focus of the discussion was the need of sharing more data and best practices in order to
develop a new innovative agriculture.
FOODIE at the Joined Capigi-ICT-Agri ERANET workshop
25 May 2016 Rotterdam, Netherlands. The FOODIE representatives demonstrated use cases, Telematics of Farm
Machinery and Estimation of Yield potential zones, where availability of agricultural open data contributes to
evaluation and improvement of cost efficiency of farming.
FOODIE at CAPSELLA Project Workshop
30-31 May 2016 Volterra, Pisa, Italy. It was the optimal floor where farmers,
networks, stakeholders, ICT and data experts could give the voice to their
experience and opinions about data sharing, ICT developments and
management of both organic and conventional agriculture in EU. FOODIE
representatives, by presenting the functionalities of the platform, raised
awareness on the benefits of using ICTs in farm management. The cornerstone
of the discussion was how open spatial and non-spatial data can support
sustainable agro-ecological farming.
FOODIE at the EMPHASIS workshop
1 June 2016, Brussels, Belgium. The workshop was organized by EMPHASIS (H2020-SFS-03a-2014) project. The event
dealt with future investment in agriculture and IPM (Integrated Pest Management) strategies. During the event
roundtables were held to discuss about real-life scenarios related to the adoption of new technologies and optimal
management of resources, FOODIE platform was presented as the platform in EU that will help farmers all over Europe
to share knowledge and open data.
FOODIE at the XXIII Wielkopolska Agricultural Advisory Center (WODR)
regional agricultural fair
4-5 June 2016, Sielinko, Poland. During this regional fair organized by the
Wielkopolska Agricultural Advisory Center (WODR) in Sielinko farm and
exhibition center, PSNC shared a stand with WODR team working on the
decision support system. In the stand PSNC had information about FOODIE
project, and also provided information about FOODIE marketplace, which is
being developed by PSNC. The marketplace aims at providing a virtual space to
connect consumers and producers of agricultural data and applications. As part
of the fair, there were also some other stands showing different technologies,
machinery and materials used in agriculture and livestock.
FOODIE at the AgriFuture Days 2016
22 – 24 June 2016, Villach, Austria. The conference was organised by the
Club of Ossiach. The event dealt with ICT in agriculture. During the event
roundtables were held to discuss about technology integration,
stakeholders cooperation and education. FOODIE was presented by
Wirelessinfo with the topic FOODIE Farm-orie ted ope data i Europe .
