OCRRA’s Food Waste Composting: Current Status

With an estimated 18-24,000 tons of commercial

and institutional food waste generated in OCRRA’s

service area, and an untapped market for organics

recovery, OCRRA is expanding food waste

composting operations.

The Journey Began in 2007:

• 2007 -Technology and Site

Visits

• 2008 – Pilot Project and

Technology Evaluation

The Journey Continued to 2013: • 2009 – 2010 - Preliminary

Site Planning and Cost

Assessments

• 2010-2011 – Refine

process, technology and

stormwater design needs

• 2012 – Final Design and

Permitting

• 2013 – Build! Six months

of oversight

The “Pilot Project”

Began in 2008 and ran until the construction

began in May of 2013.

OCRRA’s Pilot Project

Evaluated Performance:

Optimal Mix Ratios - 3:1

ratio of yard waste to food

waste

Material was then . . .

placed in “static piles” over

a series of above-grade

pipes that extend 80 feet

along the bottom of the

compost pile .

OCRRA’s Food Waste Composting

• The Aerated Static Pile

system is effective year

round!

• Air is injected into the

piles via the piping

network, accelerating

the decomposition

process and eliminating

the need to routinely

turn the pile.

As Members of the US

Composting Council and Part of

the Seal of Testing Assurance

Program, OCRRA tests its

Compost annually and often

quarterly depending on volume

and generation rates.

Test Results are always available

online at www. OCRRA.org.
