What? The Pilot Project Concept

• We hope to identify: – Best containers – Effective training for building users – Effective training for custodial staff – Challenges? – An improved approach?

• We’ll need your help & feedback!

Labels on containers will specify the types of acceptable food waste. (The difference is that for dining prep kitchens, containers will be larger and able to fit compostable materials such as plates, etc. Special reminders have also been included regarding plastic wrap and gloves which are likely to be used in kitchen prep areas.) We will also have a webpage with detailed information on the pilot project and acceptable items. Where will custodial staff take food waste? • Custodial staff: Take bags to designated brown

toter in outdoor waste collection site. • Food waste will be picked up on a regular

schedule.

Where does it go next?

• Yale Facilities takes it to a compost facility in New Milford, CT.

What happens at the compost facility?

• At the facility, food waste turns into compost through traditional windrow composting.

How is the compost used?

• Some compost is returned to Yale and used to improve the soil on campus and at the Yale Farm. In 2013, Yale used 45 cubic yards of compost from the New Milford composting facility.

FAQ: What’s my role?

• Building occupants are important for ensuring that waste is properly separated in containers for food waste, recycling, and trash.

• Custodial staff are critical to ensuring correct bags are used and the food waste is taken to the correct toter.

• We want to hear feedback from you!

Page 19: Food Waste Collection Pilot Project - Welcome | Yale … · 2014-02-28 · • Composting food waste reduces Yale’s environmental impact and saves money. • Food waste is currently

FAQ: Will the bin smell?

• The bins allow air flow which prevents build up of liquids, so food waste remains drier, breaking down with less mess and odor.

• Food waste will be composted off-site, not in the

building.
