Dribbling down court Deja Turner (11) yelled plays to her teammates in an effort to make a basket. Turner proved to be a crucial member in the home court win against Wharton on Nov. 20, 2014. The boys team had played right before the girls and had a huge crowed, but the crowd left as the girls came out. “The crowd doesn’t effect how we play, but it was fun to see friends in there. We really play for each other,” said Savannah Walker (12). Up to half time the team was winning and the energy was high. “Coming back after half time we were turnt! We knew the mistakes we made the first half had to be cleaned up and we were just ready to get back out there and finish what was started. We knew the other team would’ve had the same mind set but we had to faith in each other and ourselves. It was our house and it was our game,” said Desiree Skipper Davenport (12). At the end of the third period the team was up by one with a score of 33 to 32 with a minute and a half left. Going into the fourth period the Wharton was up by one but the team tied the game at 40 to 40 with five minutes left. Turner stayed on her toes and helped the team to a victory of 50 to 49. Turner felt she had really taken a leadership role that year and showed her skills. “Being a junior I didn’t want to take over being the leader, but this year was my time and I took over that role,” said Turner (11).

This was the first copy I wrote after NSPA so I was able to use my new knowledge for it. I utilized my new knowledge of how to cover sporting events in a captivating manner.

It was noon on Saturday Dec. 20 and the first day of winter break. The team had been up since 7:30 a.m. due to their first game that day that day being at 9 a.m. Even though the boys were exhausted and ready to start break, they were excited to play Durant. Sophomore Wills Epps was excited to play and he was confident Plant would take the win against Durant High School. “Coach G told us the game plan and we tried our best to do it,” Epps. The team excelled in stealing the ball and dribbling down court. Epps and Jack Hammer (10), who were move up to varsity, both stole the ball on separate occasions and ran down court and scored. Their speed helped in the victory of the game. The team showed their skills by holding a consistent lead in the score. Going into the third period the score was 18-4 and went into the fourth with a score of 27-9. The lead motivated the team to keep up the hustle. “It motivated us to have fun and practice our plays right knowing we were going to win,” Carson Turner (10). The teams confidence and Coach G’s preparation led the team to a victory against Durant. They won with a score of 31-19.

Writing the dates for this copy proved to be a challenge. I did not know how to write the dates and time properly so I came into class and asked my teacher for guidance. Having this copy right before

the exam helped me becuase it proved to be a refresher for my exam.

Emily - “The team bonding was fun. Getting to spend time with my teammates and connecting in something besides basketball was nice and all the laughs we had.”

Skipp - “We went to Cedar Kirk and did team bonding.”

Savanah - “Our bonding trip and times we spent together before the game camp-ing.”

Sharline - “When we went to Cedar Kirk because of the team challenges and the things we had to do.”

For this mod we focused on the seniors favorite memory of the season. All the girls had the same answer. I should have gone back and asked better follow up questions or rephrased the question for

each person so I would have gotten varying answers.

“I missed my aunts birthday dinner at Bern’s. I had to miss having steak, my favorite meal at Bern’s. Plus I didn’t get to see my cousins who I never see.” -Wills Epps (10)

“I was at the beach with my cousins and family for New Year’s and I had to leave for practice. I was going to stay and go fishing with my cousin, Jack Raney (10) but I had to come back early.” -Carson Turner (10)

“I missed a lot of family dinners. Missing family dinners stressed me out because I value my time with them.” -Jack Hammer (10)

“I missed going back up to Illinois to see my family up there. I moved to Tampa in over the summer. I go up there all the time so it was not that big of a deal.” -Tanner Dalechek

These were the quotes I got for a mod about the JV boys basketball team regarding what events they missed due to basketball. The first time I got quotes they were not substantial enough so I had

to go deeper into the subject and come up with good follow up questions.

This swim meet proved to be a challenging due to cameras not working as planned. Although there were problems I was able to work with the cameras that did not die and get cool shots. I was able to

stay calm and work with what I had.

Page 7: Folio

For this pictureI was able to learn what type of settings I should use on my camera for the lighting. I played around with the settings and learned what worked best. I also used photoshop for this for this

picture and larned some tricks about that.

As the Gold Rush assembled and Coach Weiner gave his traditional pump up speech, the high energy atmosphere boosted in the teams confidence as they prepared for their game against Armwood. Raeder Frantzen (12) said the key to a good game was, “a really quite and unified environment in the locker room. It helps when we are all in-tune hours before the game starts.” For Rex Culpepper (11) music helped him focus on being the starting quarter back for the first time in his high school football career. As the game started Derek Baity (12) said, “The Gold Rush kept me on my heels. The whole game I feel like I have to do extremely well to keep the Gold Rush happy.” As the game progressed the score fluctuated and at half time Armwood was in the lead. Clarke Miller (12) said, “I felt we were struggling on offense. Coach came in at half time and kept it really positive. Second half we wore down Armwood’s defense and pounded the ball down.” In the fourth quarter Plant won in the last 41 seconds with a touchdown by Tykese Balwdin (11). “The Gold Rush was the heart and energy of this football game! I could really tell that the team was motivated until the last second,” Kate Finnemore (12).

This was the first copy I wrote for yearbook. I realized that the formatting for the copy was all wrong. Also the way I quoted people was wrong. I was able to learn the correct formatting from the mistakes

I made in this one.

My first ever attempt at cutouts was this picture. Looking back at it I could have cut off more of the background so the boarder looks cleaner. Also I had to figure out how to change the background

color from white to black which was very time consuming.

Page 10: Folio

I did this cutout after my previous one so I was able to fix the background color from white to black before starring. This saved me time. Also I was able to get closer cuts, but they could still be im-

proved.

Jack Hammer (10) gets the rebound and drives the ball down court deter-mined to make a basket. Hammers skills on the court got him moved up to varsity. “It was very exciting cause I’ve wanted to play varsity for years now,” said Jack Hammer.

Carson Turner (10) stays calm as he is bombarded by the Durant de-fense. Turner stayed open throughout the game and made superb passes. “Don’t let the defense speed up your play,” said Turner.

These are a few of the captions I wrote this year. I am still trying to improve my captions and make them captivating. Each time I try to ask more questions and make the captions more descriptive with

the details I get.
