Folens School at Home: 5th & 6th Class Weekly Plan: Week 9 Introduction The purpose of Folens School at Home is to help parents support their child’s learning at home. Shortly after schools closed down, we at Folens made all of our resources available for parents to use on FolensOnline. However, we understand that parents may not feel they have the time or expertise to pick and choose the most suitable activities for their child across multiple subjects. So, we turned to some experienced primary school teachers and asked them to put together a weekly plan for parents to use at home with their child. The purpose of the plan is to identify age-appropriate resources that can be used to help children learn and to provide some guidance to parents when using them. Each week, we will publish a new plan and accompanying digital resources for each of the three core subjects, English, Gaeilge and Maths, as well SESE (History, Geography and Science). We at Folens appreciate that these are challenging times for everyone and that many parents will have a limited amount of time to support their child’s learning. There is no pressure to complete every activity in the weekly plan – it can simply be used as a menu from which parents can pick and choose. Accessing the Digital Resources The digital resources can all be accessed from FolensOnline. For ease of use, we have included a link to each resource in the plan just below the thumbnail image of the resource. NB: In order to launch each resource, you will need to be logged in to FolensOnline. Registering with FolensOnline In order to login in to FolensOnline, you need to register. To do this: 1. Transition from Primary to Post-Primary: A Guide for Parents At Folens we know that the move from 6th Class to 1st year can be a challenging time for children and their parents. We have developed a practical guide for parents to help support their children with this transition, authored by experienced counsellor and teacher Graham Richmond.
Speaking about the booklet, author Graham Richmond commented “As an experienced teacher and counsellor I see the challenges many children face each year with the move to secondary school. This year following on from the disruption of school closures, I expect that children will need more support than ever. While we wait and see how schools will reopen in September I hope the advice and tips in this booklet will make the transition a little bit easier for your children.”
Launch the combined reader: Starlight 6th Class and go to p. 176. Before Reading: Ask your child to make predictions about the kind of information that will be shared in the text. Encourage your child to look at the images accompanying the text to help. During Reading: Stop after each page and ensure your child is following the text. You could ask them a question based on the information they have just read and ask them if there are any words that they do not understand. After Reading: Ask your child to answer the ‘Comprehension: Fact finding’ questions on p. 179 For a further challenge, have your child answer the ‘Comprehension: Read between the lines’ questions that follow. Writing Activity: Ask your child to think of something they believe is needed in your local area and invite them to write a letter to a local TD.
Launch the story: Scéal – 12. Feisteas (Clothing) Before Reading: Open the Foclóir (Vocabulary) mode. Read through the foclóir and nathanna (phrases) with your child. Check that they understand and know how to read each word. Keep note of these words to identify when listening to the scéal.
• de ghnáth (usually) • i gcónaí (always) • thar a bheith (incredibly) • chomh ciúin le reilig (as quiet
as a graveyard) • ar nós na gaoithe (as fast as
the wind) • níor stop mé gur … (I didn’t
stop until …)
During Reading: Open the Scéal (Story) mode. Play the story for your child. Pause regularly to discuss what has happened and to check their understanding of the story. Use a dictionary to look up any words they do not understand. If you do not have a dictionary at home, try: https://www.teanglann.ie/en Play the story again and ask your child to read along. Then ask them to read the story independently if they can. After Reading: Ask your child to draw and label an outfit.
Select the Rialta (regular) tab and the verb Ceannaigh (to buy) and Éirigh (to get up) then ‘Aimsir Fháistineach (Future Tense) and the ‘Ar aghaidh’ button to proceed.
Practise each form of the verb with your child. Begin with the mé (me), tú (you), sé (he), sí (she) forms. Then the plural forms sinn (we), sibh (you plural), siad (they). And finally, the question and negative forms.
Ask your child to make up a question for each tense for example: An gceannóidh tú bainne amárach? (Will you buy milk tomorrow?) Complete the grammar exercises on p. 98 of Abair Liom G – 5th Class. A printable copy of the page is included at the end of this document.
