2012-2013 Toyota Prius

Bumper Removal and Grille Replacement

For the 2012 and 2013 Prius models, the bumper must be removed in order to switch out the lower

grille where the fog lamps will ultimately sit in place. This is not required for the 2010 and 2011

models.

Step 1.0: Bumper Removal

Step 1.1: Remove all the screws, clips and bolts securing the bumper onto the frame coming from the

top, bottom, and sides (under the wheel well). After all the bolts are removed, be sure to dislodge the

lower bumper cover from the bottom of the bumper and leave it hanging (do this for both the driver

and passenger sides).

Step 1.2: In order to remove the clips securing the plastic cover that overlays the front bumper, use

a micro flathead screwdriver (or something really flat and thin), and pop it off like you would any

other clip.

After all clips are removed, carefully lift the plastic piece to reveal additional bolts and clips. Remove

those as well. Take note on how the plastic cover has a plastic extension that goes underneath the

front bumper upper lid.

Step 1.3: Carefully grab the side of the fender and pull outward:

Notice that the side of the bumper is clipped into the fender by three grooves. The arrows indicate

where the grooves are. Do the same for the opposite bumper side. Once both sides have been

dislodged from the fender, carefully pull the bumper outward and set it on the ground. It is highly

recommended to lay the bumper with shop towels or spare shower towels to protect the

bottom of the bumper.

VERY IMPORTANT: disconnect the daytime running light and signal lens combination plug from the

main vehicle wire harness. This is right behind the daytime running light/signal combination unit on

the driver side. To remove, just squeeze the contact clip on the plug and pull out:

Step 1.4: Set the bumper aside.

Step 2: Swapping old grille to new grille

Step 2.1: To remove the grille, take a flathead screw driver and dislodge the white clips that secures

the two lower tabs from the grille onto the bottom of the bumper. Note: on some models, tabs may

be blue instead of white. We have provided images for both cases.

Step 2.2: With the two lower white tabs removed, place them in a safe place and take your flathead

screwdriver and carefully dislodge all tabs on the grille that secures directly onto the front bumper.

There are tabs on all four sides of the grille. Dislodge the top row of tabs, the bottom row, and the

sides. We have provided images on the following page to help you find all of the tabs:

Step 2.3: After every clip you can find has been dislodge, carefully push out the front grille out of

their slots.

Step 3 - Mount your fog lights

Step 3.1: Mount the fog lights behind the bumper. Simply align 3 of the 4 tabs on each fog lamp with

the tab indentation around the fog light openings behind the bumper. One tab will be hanging loose

(upper tab away from the center of grille) and this is by design. Secure a self-tapping screw (included

with fog light kit) on the lower outer tab of each fog lamp onto the fog light light mounting point on

the front bumper and tighten with a Phillips screw driver.

Step 4: Insert new grille

Step 4.1: Snap all the tabs on the grille into place back on the bumper and reattach the two white (or

blue) clips on the lower grille extension you've removed at the beginning.

Step 5: Connecting wire harness to fog lamps While there are many ways to wrap the fog light kit wiring harness, we found that it is best to zip tie it

alongside the harness at the back at the bumper that is already in place. You may have already seen

this OEM harness in previous photos on our separate bumper removal/installation guide. See photos

below.

Connect the lamp harness plugs to fog light bulbs and wrap the harness in a similar fashion as shown

above using zip ties. ↑

Step 5.1: Route the relay and the fog lamp power wire up into the opening we have shown in the

image above where the hand is placed from the image above. WARNING: Do not connect fog lamp

harness to fuse box/power wire yet.

Step 6: Reinstall the bumper. It is the exact reversal of the steps for removing the bumper.
