PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents and Caregivers The weeks are flying past and there is so much happening at school. There is lots of fun being had at the moment with Year 6 fun day. Congratulations to the

students and teachers for their organisation. Yesterday’s excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm looked terrific. Last week, Stage 1 had fun being scientists. The week finished up with the P&C Disco. This week, the students in the Support Unit have been at the Variety Christmas function and transition to high school. There are lots of photos about all of these events on Instagram to keep you up to date! Thank you to the teachers who worked the late shift last Friday night at the Disco. Thank you also to the parents who helped out selling glow in the dark novelties, to the P&C exec for organising the night and the canteen for staying open to sell treats! There is information about how funds raised will be spent in the P&C report. P&C Uniform Shop Yesterday a note went home with all students explaining the future of the Uniform Shop. There is also a copy in FOCUS if you missed yesterday’s note. Please read the information so you are fully informed about where and how you can buy Peakhurst PS uniforms. Handover Sheets and Reports The finishing touches are being put on the reports to be sent home. They are going through their first and second reads. The reports will be ready to go home in week 9. However, if you wish to speak with your child’s class teacher, you are welcome to make an appointment. At the same time as writing reports, teachers are completing a ‘handover sheet’ to give to next year’s teacher. This supports the conversations that teachers have to ensure that the transition from one class to the next is as smooth as possible. Classes 2020 Our numbers are changing from week to week. At the present time we have 23 classes for 2020. (This year there are 24 in mainstream. Support Unit classes are stable and filled under a different system.) However, an additional few enrolments will change that. It is likely that students will remain in their 2019 class groupings for the first few days of 2020. I don’t want to put students into classes and then have to re-arrange them because we have an additional class with new enrolments. I know this is not something that traditionally happens at Peakhurst but as we are no longer able to back fill numbers with out of area enrolments, it has become more of a waiting game. If you are going away and your child will not be returning for the start of the school year in 2020 can you please write a note to the class teacher so that your child can be included in numbers and therefore class arrangements.

Speaking with Children who are not your Own Please DO NOT speak with children who are not your own if you feel your child has been slighted. Please speak with the class teacher or an executive and let the school manage any issues. I know we all want to protect our cubs but you are simply not allowed to take those matters into your own hands. We do act on situations when we become aware of problems. The Enclosed Land act can be evoked which prevents people from entering the school grounds and keeps all students safe. Parking and Driving I have applied for a crossing supervisor for the Bailey Parade crossing. Research is conducted before a supervisor is appointed. There is a tally of the number of cars taken driving up and down Bailey Parade during school time. A tally of pedestrian traffic is also taken. The company running this research is hoping to conduct the program before the end of the school year. I will keep you posted. Greenlands Ave continues to be a nightmare. Please do not park in neighbours driveways…even if you are running late, and please be careful of students crossing between cars. If you are one of the families who enjoy a chat, food, drinks etc of an afternoon with your friends, please take your rubbish with you. If you are driving around the school, please be mindful of driving within the 40kmh range…even when you are running late. Ms Sally Lawson Principal

STAGE 1 INCURSION – SLIME, SHERBET & BUBBLES On Thursday 21st of November, 2 Green went to the science incursion. We did some fun experiments. The first one was to make slime. We made what we call “Sneaky Slime”, because when you touch it softly it turns really soft and when you touch it really hard it turns really hard! There were two ingredients we used, cornflour and water colouring. There were lots of colours you could choose from like pink, yellow and blue. It was so fun! Secondly, we made sherbet! There were three ingredients. Citric acid, bicarbonate of soda and sugar! Most of the students really enjoyed it, including me. Listen. What’s something that pops? You use straws and it’s really enjoyable... it’s bubbles! We had to do a few things. First we tried to make lots and lots of bubbles. Do

you know how? You have to lean your straw onto the plate. Then we worked out together how to make a very big bubble. You then blow in the middle slowly. We then worked out how to make a bubble inside a bubble. We had to blow inside a bubble! We really enjoyed the incursion and had a great time! Sophie - 2 Green

Could you be an ethics teacher for Peakhurst Public School?

We are seeking volunteers so that we can provide ethics classes for all the families who have requested it for their children. We currently have 3 volunteer Ethics teachers at PPS – unfortunately, it is not enough for all the students that have enrolled in Ethics. Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available at 9.20am on Tuesday morning each week. In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. Children discuss topic such as: - imagining how others feel - how do we treat living things? - what is laziness? - how do we disagree in a respectful way? - fairness If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or contact Peakhurst Public

School’s ethics coordinator, Amy O’Mara on 0410 552 027 or [email protected]

STAGE 3 CAMP

Camp was a very fun excursion, we got to learn so many new things and learning about the history of Australia was really interesting. The best part of camp was when we went to the botanical gardens and we discovered fascinating plants. It was full of facts and history about Australia. We went to Questacon and saw so many different science experiments. We also went to the Art Gallery and learnt the history of art. Overall, camp was a great excursion and we all learnt things that we didn’t know. Jessica – 5/6 Purple School camp in Canberra was a new experience to me. Being with my friends, going to the museums, seeing parliament and having a party. I was first intimidated because my parents wouldn't be there and I would get homesick, but I soon overcame that fear because my friends kept me company. We played a big game of tips outside of the mint which was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Going to parliament and seeing what we were learning about was amazing. It really gave me a deeper understanding of what I was learning. Overall, school camp was an experience and I will remember it my whole life. Tate – 5/6 Purple

SCHOOL DISCO

The school disco was a huge success on Friday night with nearly 400 tickets sold. Many disco-goers arrived early, eager to purchase their glow accessories and get into the hall and get dancing! Thank you to our DJ Footsteps who did not disappoint, cranking out the latest tunes to which the students sang and danced to. The students welcomed a cold ice block at the end of their solid hour of dancing and thank you to everyone for bringing their own water bottles on the night - we did our small bit for the environment! All in all we raised over $3,000, which will be put towards future playground upgrades. Thank you to everyone for your support. Many thanks to the following people who helped make the night a success: The volunteers Sue, Karen, Thanh, Moussa, Kevin, Kylie, Hibba, Kimberley, Leanne, Finn, Siobhan, Danielle, Amy, Cecelia. The teachers who gave up their personal time to supervise the students inside the disco, Ms Lawson, Ms Bray, Ms Fterniatis, Mrs Kikilas, Mrs Ganiatsos and Mrs Zanetti. The office staff, Mrs Ryan and Mrs Langton, who helped out with ticket sales. The canteen staff, in particular Jan, who opened the canteen for us on the night and had some very yummy sweet and savoury treats for sale. P&C

P&C FUNDRAISING FOR 2019

As the end of the year draws near, we would like to thank the school community for supporting the P&C’s fundraising efforts throughout 2019. Through events such as the Easter Raffle, the Election Day BBQs and cake stall, the Mothers and Father’s Day stalls, the Trivia Night and most recently the Disco, the P&C have managed to raise approximately $15,000 this year. We are happy to say that these funds, along with funds from previous years, will now be transferred to the school to be used towards the following playground upgrades, some of which will take place over the summer holidays. Softfall is to be laid on the playground between Block

A and the Library (which will include handball courts, and other games). The cost of this project is in excess of $75,000 and the P&C is contributing $20,000.

A Yarning Circle (an outdoor learning space) will be

constructed in the quiet area of the junior playground. The cost of this project is approximately $35,000 and the P&C is contributing $15,000.

Thank you once again for all your support in 2019. P&C
