WORKING TOWARDS A CIRCULAR ECONOMYToday’s linear approach to the use of resources is seeing landfills fill up, and our environment polluted by discarded waste that we no longer need or want. This waste has a significant impact on climate, ecosystems, water, air and communities. – The Ministry for the Environment

SO WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? To tackle the problem, the Ministry – as well as many businesses, organisations and individuals in New Zealand – are working towards a circular economy approach.

This means taking resources carefully from nature and ensuring the products we make are designed so that the resources in them can be reused indefinitely. Ultimately we need to design waste, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions out of the system.

When a product is designed for the longest use possible and can be easily repaired, re-manufactured or recycled (or used, composted and nutrients returned) we consider it to have a circular life cycle.

A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

RETURN

Today’s economy is massively wasteful.

Most of the materials we use, we lose,

the things we make are consistently

under-utilised, and our efforts to fix it

treat the symptoms, not the cause.

ANDREW MORLET, EXPERT ON THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

WASTE & COMPOSTING

REDUCING LANDFILL WASTE

THE MINISTRY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT OUTLINES SOME SIMPLE STEPS WE CAN TAKE TO REDUCE LANDFILL WASTE: • PREVENT WASTE – say no to unnecessary single use

plastic items like bags, straws and cutlery; buy items with minimal packaging; where possible buy products made of recycled or recyclable materials; and shop smartto minimise food waste.

• REUSE – invest in items like reusable water bottles, keep cups and reusable bags.

• RECYCLE – recycle materials like plastic, glass, paper and aluminium to keep them out of landfill, ensuring you rinse items and follow local council recycling guidelines.

• COMPOST – set up a home compost system; or for businesses, engage with a commercial provider to dispose of compostable waste.

For more information visit: www.mfe.govt.nz

WE COMPOST BIN LINERSCompostable bin liners assist with containing and separating organic waste on site, but ensuring it can be processed with minimal handling.

We Compost compostable bags are made from a combination of cornstarch and Ecopond Flex 162 which is a compostable polymer to improve the elasticity of the bag.

All We Compost liners are EN13432 and Vincotte (TUV Austria) certified.

ORGANIC WASTE & COMPOSTING Organic waste – food waste in particular – is common-place in most homes and businesses. By collecting it and disposing of it properly, you can significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, particularly with the increased range of compostable packaging available.

WHAT IS COMPOSTING?Composting is the process of breaking down biological material such as food scraps and compostable packaging in to biomass. It requires the perfect combination of moisture, airflow and microbial activity. As microbes consume the waste, they generate heat which accelerates product breakdown. The resulting product – compost – is organic matter that can be returned to the soil.

New Zealanders throw away 157,389 tonnes of food a year. That is equivalent to 271 jumbo jets of food that has to go somewhere to rot, instead of being eaten. All of this food is worth about $1.17 billion each year. lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz

WHERE CAN I SEND COMPOSTABLE WASTE?Small-scale food composting can be done at home, but compostable packaging and large amounts of organic waste must be processed through a commercial facility where conditions are carefully controlled. There are nine industrial facilities in New Zealand and three community facilities that currently accept compostable packaging.

For a list of facilities, visit https://www.wasteminz.org.nz

We Compost also runs Supertrash Collection Services – find out more at https://www.supertrash.nz

SUSTAINABLE RETAIL PACKAGING

ABOUT THE WASTE MINIMISATION (PLASTIC BAGS) REGULATIONS 2018WHY THE BAN?Plastic bags take a long time to break down, can absorb harmful toxins and leech them in to surrounding soil and waterways, and pollute our environment.

WHO IS AFFECTED? The regulations apply to all retailers and businesses in New Zealand who sell goods – from small produce markets and retail stores, through to large department stores, supermarkets and online retailers.

WHAT BAGS ARE BANNED? New or unused single-use plastic bags with handles, up to 70 microns in thickness, including those fitting this description made of degradable plastic (i.e. biodegradable, compostable and oxo-degradable).

REPLACING SINGLE-USE PLASTIC As of July 1, 2019 the sale and distribution of most single-use plastic shopping bags was banned in New Zealand, meaning that retailers must source more sustainable replacements for traditional plastic bags. It is estimated that New Zealanders used around 750 million bags every year, with an average use time per bag of only 12 minutes.

Single-use plastic bags often end up

polluting our precious coastal and marine

environments and cause serious harm

to marine mammals, sea-birds and other

marine life. Plastic waste is polluting

our land, lakes and rivers, sea coast and

oceans. Single-use plastic is a big part

of the problem, with plastic bags among

the most common items found in beach

clean-ups in New Zealand.

HON EUGENIE SAGE, ASSOCIATE MINISTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

New Zealand has limited nationwide infrastructure to deliver compostable plastics to commercial facilities that can break them down. They are not suitable for landfill or standard recycling facilities.

Food packaging has traditionally been made from unsustainable and difficult to recycle materials like foam, polystyrene and polypropylene; and even products marketed as recyclable – such as paper cups – can’t be recycled in normal waste streams when contaminated by food waste, or when certain waterproof linings are used. To combat food packaging waste, businesses need to combine innovative materials and technology with new waste stream processes, to create more circular packaging solutions.

COMING SOON: HUHTAMAKI ‘GIVE A CUP’ SCHEME Both businesses and consumers are increasingly aware about recycling and waste, and want to help reduce impact to the environment. Huhtamaki’s Give a Cup all-in-one transparent paper cup recycling program aims to tackle the broader issues of the industry as landfill costs continue increase and space is becoming limited.

REDUCING YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT • Reduce usage with clever design and reusable options – aim

for minimal packaging; sell or encourage customers to bring reusable cups, containers and straws in-store; and turn away from single-use items like plastic cutlery.

• Recycle – some materials such as PET (recycling code 1) can be recycled in New Zealand, and manufacturers are creating collection services for materials that cannot be processed via traditional waste streams.

• Compost – commercial collection services are being set up to manage compostable waste that cannot be processed via traditional waste streams.

• Sustainable base materials – if packaging cannot be removed altogether, or switched to a reusable or recyclable option, materials from sustainable and renewable sources should be used such as paper, starch and sugarcane based substances.

STATIONERY SOLUTIONS

RESPECTFULLY SOURCED & RECYCLABLEMany workplaces have implemented controls to manage paper use and waste – from paper recycling schemes through to switching office items from plastics to other materials. However, by nature of the way they are used, workplaces still churn through large amounts of consumable stationery products. WASTE REDUCTION TIPSDon’t overfill dispensers Best practice is to ensure dispensers are not filled right to the top as this can result in multiple hand towels being pulled out, as well as torn towels left hanging from the dispenser.

Ensure dispensers are installed at an appropriate moderate height Dispensers that are installed too high can dispense more than required due to the fluid motion of pulling the sheets or rolls down from a high angle; and dispensers installed too low can result in product ripping as it is pulled up.

CIRCULARITYTork are working globally to ensure a sustainable future through circularity. Through design, reduce, reuse, recycle, Tork are aiming for a zero waste future.

RENEWABLE ENERGY78% of Tork products are made in New Zealand using between 60-70% renewable energy throughout the entire life cycle, reducing the depletion of natural resources.

USE LESSTork products are designed to be as efficient as possible. Tork SmartOne® system reduces toilet paper usage by up to 40%.

LESS WASTETork has reduced packaging waste with the introduction of Carry Packs. Made from 100% recyclable PE-LD plastic, Carry Packs create 84% less waste than cardboard cartons.

ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATIONSTork has the largest number of certifications in the professional hygiene market including Forest Stewardship Council, Blue Angel, Environmental Choice New Zealand, EU Ecolabel and Green Seal.

SMARTER SHIPPING SOLUTIONS

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

Compared to plastic and other less sustainable options, cardboard cases are a relatively sustainable option when it comes to packaging and shipping. However, simply choosing a cardboard case does not automatically result in a sustainable packaging solution. Although cardboard is usually recyclable and often manufactured from recycled materials, it is also important to ensure the materials have been sourced sustainably, and that any tapes, or protective filler packaging used is also as environmentally friendly as possible.

HARVEYS STOCK CASES*If made from sustainably sourced material, cardboard has the potential to be the ultimate sustainable and recyclable packaging option, especially if locally sourced to minimise carbon footprint. Cardboard boxes are generally manufactured without dyes or bleaches ensuring that cardboard boxes can be disposed of without risk of leeching toxic substances in to the environment. They are available in a variety of sizes customised to fit different products, helping minimise the amount of filler or material waste; and are easy to pack and transport.

IMPROVED EFFICIENCY AND PERFORMANCE• Easy paper loading• Designed specifically to prevent paper jams

FASTER AND EASIER• Simple footswitch operation and digital length control

delivers continuous, customised lengths• Cut and Hold function continuously produces paper

output to keep up pace with the packer

FASFIL® 3000• Ideal for high-volume,

in-line operations with oversized voids

Often the conversation around sustainable packaging is focused more on the end product produced for the consumer, however there is growing awareness among businesses and suppliers to deliver more environmentally acceptable packaging right through the supply chain. Shipped products have traditionally been wrapped in thick layers of plastic wrapping and strap, but now emerging technology is allowing for leaner and greener industrial packaging solutions, that don’t compromise on efficiency, security and safety.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

INNOVATIVE NEW STOCK CONTAINMENT SOLUTIONTHINK REUSABLE, NOT DISPOSABLEP.C. Net™ Stock Containment Nets are easily pulled down around your product, then secured to the bottom of the pallet, with elasticated edging ensuring a tight fit to keep product from moving. • Eliminates the need to replace shrinkwrap after removing small

amounts of product• Can reduce up to 500mm of height• Colour coded for easy recognition• Three standard pallet sizes available in three heights

100% RECYCLED, RECYCLABLE PET STRAPPINGFROMM PET Strapping has been developed using recycling techniques for used PET bottles that creates raw material for new PET bottles, as well as for the production of strapping. Both the bottles and strapping can be reprocessed in the same manner, enabling a closed material lifecycle that sustainably protects natural resources. • A thinner strap providing equal or better holding force compared

to others• Corrosion resistant – keeps the product aesthetically presentable• Outstanding impact resistance – durable, hardy product• PET is safer to handle than steel – reduced LTI’s and incidents• Less strapping is required to secure a load, reducing the

BEST WRAPPING TECHNIQUE

1. Hold the pallet wrap so the clinging side of the film is facing the load. Use a dispenser, or plastic lugs if this is not available, to protect your hands.

2. Tuck the end of the film under the load or tie it off to the pallet.

3. Start walking forwards along the side of the pallet you are wrapping allowing film to reel off.

4. When you get 2/3rds of the way down, brake the roll with your hands and start stretching the wrap, holding it away from the pallet (towards your body). Keep pulling until you reach the end of the pallet.

5. Keep the wrap tense and pull tight around the corner, then release.

6. Repeat until you have even coverage, with the pallet bound into the load. For most loads 2 wraps around the bottom, then spiralling up with between a quarter and a third overlap, 2 top wraps, then repeating the spiral downwards, should give a good hold.

HANDY HINT EXTRA REINFORCINGIf you have a requirement for extra reinforcing of a load, then banding or roping is a useful technique.

Turn the roll side on.

The wrap will still reel off, but you will end up with a thick, tight elastic rope of wrap that is very strong, rather than a sheet.

This is a good way of binding the pallet in at the bottom for extra strength, or shoring up a sagging middle if you have soft packs (ie sacks).
