Like many of our readers and advertisers, Dede and I are small business owners.

We know firsthand what it’s like to work hard and sacrifice in order to offer our best product to customers and to provide for the families of our employees. We also know the benefits of networking and building relationships in our community so that we can ALL build a better future for our children. We believe in the commerce community.

This month we were inspired by the stories of the category winners in the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce’s 3oth Annual Small Business Awards. We read thoughts and quotes from people not much different than you or us who still believe in the American dream of succeeding in business. We were inspired by what inspired them and could relate with their desires to be contributors to our nation’s great society.

Please don’t miss this feature and we encourage you to support our local merchants and service providers.

Shopping and buying local definitely does make our community stronger.

With the holidays upon us, it’s also time to reflect on the importance of family and friends. We especially hope that this busy time of the year will include some down time for fun and relaxation - for making memories and capturing moments that make life worthwhile.

Here’s to a wonderful Thanksgiving respite. We look forward to making your life in the Greater Brandon area a little more meaningful by sharing your stories and celebrating your successes.

Warmest Regards,

Mike and Dede FloydMike Floyd - Publisher

“Teach a Man To Fish” or in This case, a Boy scouT6th annuaL Jim Lanier memoriaL Fishing Derby heLD at Dover Park Written by: Dale Bliss

Fishing, family and fun with good eatin’, kind fellowship and simple pleasures are just a few of the Boy Scout

fundamentals.

Armed only with fishing poles and the anticipation of catching the biggest fish or the most fish, or casting the farthest or most

accurate, approximately 200 Scouts and family members descended on Dover Park for the 6th Annual Jim Lanier Memorial Fishing Derby hosted by the Boy Scouts of America, Gulf Ridge Council Timucua District on October 8 at Dover Park.

The fishing derby was established to help

memorialize Jim Lanier, a long time supporter and volunteer of Boy Scouts of America. Lanier truly believed in the scouting program.

Veteran supporters of scouting, Steve Wilson and Michelle Wilson, once again, after several years, chaired this worthwhile and anticipated event. Additionally, Troop 101 did their share by manning a lunch concession stand serving hotdogs, cold drinks and potato chips.

District Executive Molly Blanton said, “Kids really enjoy fishing and for many, this Cub Scout event is their first opportunity to try it. It is always wonderful to see so many having fun with their families and being active, enjoying the out-of doors.”

Blanton continued, “Zachary Deaton, a Boy Scout with Troop 101 who helped out at the Derby said, ‘We had so much fun and so did the other kids that were there.’

Congratulations to he Derby winners who are as follows:

Longest fish: Tie between one-year-old Brandon Ott of Pack 110 and Ben Carhart 6, of Pack 680 with a catfish measuring 17.5 inches. 2nd place- Garret Pruitt, 9, of Pack 7973rd place- Caleb Howell, 10, of Pack 61

Longest cast: Ronan Wiley, 9, of Pack 11, age 9 2nd place- Jayson Nunez, 9, of Pack 659 3rd place- Jai Allen, 7, of Pack 92

Most fish: Ronan Wiley, 9, of Pack 11 2nd place- Maximus Grygorcewic, 6, of Pack 606 3rd place- DJ Canty, 6, of Pack 734. Most accurate cast: Matt Cullins, 7, of Pack 7342nd place- Mozart St. Burns, 7, of Pack 14 3rd place- Louden Everhart , 10 of Pack 734

For more information regarding the Boy Scouts of America feel free to contact the Gulf Ridge Council at 813-872-2691 or e-mail Molly Blanton, District Executive of Timucua District at [email protected].

KaTie Busciglio - BesT FeMale Dancer aT TaMpa’s Dancing wiTh The sTars 2011 FunDraisercharitabLe Dancing For a Worthy causestory by: Cheryl Johnston

the newlywed and business partner team of Derek and Katie Busciglio consider themselves to be especially blessed to

give back into the communities they serve with the family orthodontic practice.

At the recent “Tampa Bay’s Dancing with the Stars - Broadway Edition“ fundraising event, Katie received the Judges Award for “Best Female Dancer”, along with her professional dance partner, David Chancellor, owner of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Valrico. She also raised more than $10,000 to benefit A Kid’s Place in Brandon.

The win was a wonderful surprise. Contestants garnered votes by raising the most funds or like Katie, earning the Judges Award for performance excellence. Expressing her pleasure, she explained, “This is the one David wanted. It’s a credit to his studio and his teaching ability.”

Florida native Katie Mullis Busciglio was selected to participate in the dancing fundraiser after Steve and Julie Weintraub, of Gold and Diamond Source and founders of Hands Across the Bay, suggested Katie should apply. When paired with professional instructor David Chancellor, the two were limited to no more than 20 hours total time for lessons and practice.

“I am not a professional dancer,” offered Katie, “but I learned so much from David and his wife Kelly. Derek and I plan to take lessons and maybe compete in Plant City’s Dancing with the Locals one year soon.” She

continued, “Their studio is a great family place. Dancing is so freeing. Nothing makes you feel better than to dance with someone you care about.”

Fundraising, performance, and compassion come naturally to Katie, who has a nursing background and is also the vocalist for G6, a mainstream cover band that plays at venues like the Blue Martini, Hard Rock Café (11-26-11) and Park Square Cellar (11-25-11).

The vivacious bride of one year is also the Director for Community Outreach for Busciglio Orthodontics and its locations in Brandon, Plant City, and Wesley Chapel. Her first year goal was to raise $10,000 for charities. With the dancing event, she achieved the doubling of that goal.

The Busciglios are a team away from the office, too. Katie shared, “My husband comes to all the band’s shows.”

The two share interests in food, wine, and gatherings with family and friends. Engaged in Napa and married in Italy, the Busciglios love Italian food especially. According to Katie, her ability to make a great red sauce was a prerequisite to Derek’s proposal. “Apparently, I passed the test,” she said. Weeknights they try to eat healthy, with salmon being another of her specialties, so they can enjoy fine dining on the weekends.

Very soon the Busciglios will learn whether their VH Video of Tampa produced wedding video, nominated for The Wedding

and Event Videography Association’s “International Creative Excellence” award, receives this year’s Oscar equivalent in that industry.

We hope one day,” Katie said, “to be blessed by God with children” and in fact, she added, “We are dying for a big family.” In the meantime, she will fulfill her board responsibilities for Vine to Wine, the Riverview event that benefits A Kid’s Place.

Katie explained, “We will continue in our efforts to help children through charities we support. You meet so many amazing people with similar interests in serving the community. That is even how Focus co-owner Dede Floyd and I connected. When she told me their 2011 Focus Makeover story, we wanted to help the young boy whose mother died.”

As for Dancing with the Stars, Katie recalled, “After my wedding, it was the second most glamorous night of my life. Derek and I will definitely continue to support this event, especially since Busciglio Orthodontics and the Chancellor’s Fred Astaire Studio are local businesses and the proceeds benefit local charities. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

She also offered encouraging words for those considering the fundraising/dancing combination. “My mother Marcia Mullis always told me, ‘You can say (or ask for) anything, as long as it’s expressed in a nice and loving way.”

the 2011 small business of the year award Winners are:

The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce is one of the best in the nation at promoting, developing, and honoring the local businesses whose owners embrace membership. In this local area, small businesses comprise 85% of the GBCC membership and as such are the “backbone of the community.” Successful businesses, no matter their size or shape, help communities and their economies to thrive. Obviously, the Greater Brandon area is doing just that.

On October 20, 2011, more than 275 attendees gathered at the Crowne Plaza Tampa East to converse, dine, and cheer for winners in five categories at the 30th anniversary of GBCC’s Small Business of the Year Awards Gala. For the tenth successive year, The Bank of Tampa- Brandon Division was Title Sponsor for the prestigious and elegant event.

Credit is due also to the Supporting Sponsors, which included: Bright House Networks- Business Solutions, Crowne Plaza, Hanna, Lemar & Morris, C.P.A., Coventry Health Care of Florida and Tampa Digital, Inc. Fancy That! Specialty Linens was a Contributing Sponsor. As official Media Sponsor, the Osprey Observer provided attendees with a 16-page souvenir detailing each of the 15 businesses in contention for the top awards.

The Chamber awards winners in five different categories, based either on number of employees or type of business. Those are: 1-5 employees, 6-15 employees, 16-plus employees, home-based, and minority and women owned.

The evening’s program included a scrolling video of the past 30 years’ winners and a brief segment on each of the 15 finalists explaining a little about their business philosophy or inspiration. As Cyndi Edwards, Daytime’s host on Channel 8, announced each category’s winners, the owners walked forward to receive their award and be photographed while festive beats of songs like “We are the Champions” kept the momentum going.

From more than 80 applicant businesses, the independent and neutral judges from Hillsborough SCORE Chapter 203 calculated points for the fifteen finalists on the basis of GBCC established rules. Factors such as business longevity, accountability, growth, stability, site visit impressions, and community and Chamber involvement are scored from 1-5 points. SCORE 203 Chairman Joe LoPresti said, “We get picture of well-run businesses - the site visits impress us with things like cleanliness, orderliness, and employee relations.” He commented on the difficulty this year of judging was because often the point spread between the five in each category was miniscule.

SCORE 203 volunteers to counsel and mentor business owners for free in areas such as marketing, location, promotion, budgeting, cash flow and anything else small businesses need. They also offer educational classes to ensure success. LoPresti said of SCORE 203’s members, “Our goal is to help businesses grow. We love this work. We also appreciate serving the Brandon Chamber. We see it filled with strong entrepreneurs because GBCC does an excellent job of promoting businesses and helping owners and employees to constantly update their skills.” (For more SCORE 203 info, visit www.tampascore.org.)

Home-based business owners Bill and Yvonne Thomas were totally surprised by their company’s win because they didn’t even think they would be nominated. Bill said, “I couldn’t even sleep that night and I still can’t believe it.”

The company they established in 1992 specializes in PC repairs, upgrades, and new sales with on-site consultation. With many years of collective and comprehensive knowledge and experience, B&W provides value, innovation, cost savings, and a satisfaction guarantee.

Thomas described how his supportive wife Yvonne helped him to realize he had done the best thing by leaving a 9-to-5 desk job and 31 years in the automotive business. He was “truly inspired” to start his own business, he explained, “because of the way I was treated when I first purchased a computer. Lengthy repair times and unnecessary software installed on new PCs that slow them down are not benefits to the customer.” He added, “My passion for computers was also a great influence. You really have to love repair and service work to be successful.” The couple especially enjoys the sense of accomplishment when they help a customer and exceed their needs.

The Thomases feel the strengths of their business are “the BEST customer service, even beyond their expectations, the ability to instruct customers so they completely understand their computer, and the availability factor - working with the customer’s schedule and weekends - no problem.”

For the upcoming year they plan continued support for the Brandon Chamber, which Bill described as “the best help to get the word out that will grow my business.” He considers membership a must for new owners because “the Chamber makes it easy to network with others and this helps growth, too.” He added, “The community can help also by spreading the word that we are someone they can trust.”

To new entrepreneurs, Thomas offers sound advice: “The number one thing is treating your customers fairly and going beyond their expectation. Even if you are in the right, you must satisfy the customer at all costs. Think of that as advertising expense and watch your business grow.”

Leonard Mardis believes in marking the milestones and making memories. The awards night is one he won’t soon forget. Mardis reserved three tables so 24 supportive family members, friends, staff/teachers and parents of dance academy students could enjoy a fun evening together - no matter the winners. He recalled, “I was so happy that so many of my friends, family, and supporters came to celebrate our achievements. That made the night special regardless of the outcome. I couldn’t be happier and am now working on a big celebration that will include the entire LAD Family!”

Mardis was inspired to establish his dance academy when, he explained, “Instructor Donald Samuels in Frankfurt, Germany took me to see members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater perform. One of their pieces was the world famous “Revelations”. To this day, after seeing it many times, it’s still fresh and new to me. I want to have that effect on those who see my work.”

Mardis dreams big for himself and for the students and families he serves. The strengths of his dance academy business, he believes are “cultural diversity, global expansion, and community Involvement.” Plans to grow the business this next year include expansion of the customer base via afterschool programs, integrating other forms of arts programs, and partnering with foreign dance agencies (China, Nov. 2011). He values the importance of communication in helping the community to know that “opportunities do exist and that all are welcome.”

Mardis wants folks to know that “Chamber membership especially gives you countless opportunities to grow, become aware, and be involved. There is always something to do. Even for those with busy and odd schedules, there are still planned events. As a proud member of Leadership Brandon, Class of 2009 - ‘Ready to Shine’, I’m still embracing the friendships and relationships formed as a result of that nine-month experience. I can’t say

enough about the great things that resulted from LAD’s membership in a 5-star Chamber. I know it takes great business owners to make a 5-star Chamber, but it also takes an excellent support team. We definitely have that with our Brandon Chamber.”

Mardis wants to do more than his part to mentor others in the minority category. He shared, “As a black business owner I have started spearheading the minority group from the “black pages” (launch set for 11-3-11 with feature/spread). We’d like to get Brandon more involved to do news spreads on several black business owners.”

In response to his win, Mardis said, “I was more hopeful than surprised. I know the competition was great in all categories, so you just hope you say or do something that will stand out in the judges’ minds. I know that the great things happening at the studio and beyond are a result of support from the Chamber, parents, and students, but you’re always thinking, ‘What did I forget to mention or do?’”

To small business owners, he advised, “The best thing I do is listen to my students and their parents about their concerns. Realizing that they are children first and then dancers is a philosophy that has guided me to success. Find something that works for you. I really feel that my personality (genuineness, enthusiasm, & energy) has greatly assisted in the successes I enjoy today. It’s important to love what you do because passion is contagious.”

Leonard’s Dance Academy is proud to announce upcoming performances for the remainder of 2011. Thursday, November 3 at the TECO building in downtown Tampa; 1st year primetime slot at Nativity Church’s NovemberFest, Saturday, Nov.12-11 at 8pm; Music Showcase Winterfest on Dec.10 from 1-2pm; CenterPlace Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Dec. 7 at 7pm. He is also looking ahead to China and Macao trips for a future project with his United Nations of Dance organization.

The Davises met when they attended Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. Nicole is from England and has lived 14 years in the States. With her degree in international business and Thad’s in anthropology, the two decided in 2002 that the best way to spend time together was to begin their own company.

He explained, “Nicole gave me the support and confidence to start the business and we are motivated each and every day by our children. We are setting the example for them of what hard work, honesty and integrity can achieve.”

Their passion for gardening and beautiful landscaping is a perfect fit for their personalities. Nicole explained the business, saying, “We have been a local, family-owned and operated, fully licensed company offering full service residential and commercial landscaping and lawn maintenance. Our wide range of services by uniformed employees who arrive in clearly identified vehicles with impeccably maintained equipment includes: mowing, landscape design and implementation, trimming, flower bed weeding, blowing off of surfaces, plant sales, and everything in between for the current service areas of Brandon, Dover, Lithia, Valrico, Riverview, Apollo Beach, and Seffner.”

In explaining the strengths of their business, Nicole said, “Our goal is to make your lawn something that you enjoy rather than dread, leaving you to focus on more important (and fun) things! We pay attention to detail (we weed the flowerbeds and trim the hedges up to 8’ as part of the basic package) by listening to our clients so as to understand and accommodate

their specific needs. Many clients greatly appreciate the free time we’ve been able to provide them through our service. Property owners can invest that time back into their own families or businesses.”

The Davises understand the needs of local homeowners and companies, noting that “First impressions can be lasting ones, so they should be good.” The staff at Green Lizard knows “We are only as good as our last service. We promise to earn our clients’ repeat and referral business.”

The owners acknowledge the role of GBCC, too. “We are active in the community, dedicated to our clients and thankful for Chamber membership where we can offer and receive support from like-minded people who have gone out on their own to build their businesses.”

Thaddeus offered some great advice to small business owners, “The best thing you can do to grow your business is to understand the numbers behind it. Know where every dollar comes from, where every dollar is going and how much everything costs, no matter what your business is. There is a big difference between creating yourself a job and creating a business. Decide what you want.”

Reacting to their win, the Thad and Nicole shared, “We were up against the best businesses in town so the win was naturally a surprise and a great honor.”

Eighteen friends and family members, including his parents Donald and Pauline Hess, joined Dr. Michael Hess to celebrate the win for which he described himself as “very surprised and extremely honored.”

His inspiration came from his schoolteacher parents, who he says, “taught me the importance of pursuing a great education. Success, he learned, is not only about making money. Invaluable experiences and a dentistry doctorate from the University of Florida were rewards for the serious-minded valedictorian of his class. At the University of Michigan, Hess earned his master’s degree in orthodontics.

Within the upcoming year, Hess hopes to open a new office in Apollo Beach “to better serve current and future patients” of his eight-year-old practice. He believes the strengths of his

business are “high quality and innovative orthodontic care, outstanding customer service, great working relationships, and participation in community efforts.”

The highly regarded orthodontist and involved citizen also received the 2011 Successful Doctors Award and the 2011 Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce People’s Choice Award.

Chamber membership is important to Hess and his exceptional employees. It’s all about giving back, like his generous parents modeled. He explained, “We enjoy being members of the Chamber, but most importantly we love being invited to all the various community events throughout the year. By participating in these events we get to stay involved and serve.”

Park Square Cellar proprietors Shawn and Mary Sarkisian know how to entertain. The “very surprised” owners celebrated their Small Business Award win in the 6-15 employees category at the 2011 event with 16 friends, family, and co-workers. Mary continued, “This was the first year we were nominated and the competition was extremely good. We were just thrilled to make it to the finals.”

The week they won the award, they also celebrated the 6th year anniversary of being open for business and the 1st Year anniversary of opening the Bistro. Customers enjoyed a week full of special offerings, sales and prize giveaways.

Their fabulous “New American” style bistro in Fishhawk Ranch, now offers a full bar, retail wines, spirits and cigars and outdoor seating for those interested. What most inspired the Shawn and Mary to open their business was “Our love of wine and desire to go out on our own.” We both come from entrepreneurial families (Shawn’s parents started a Tropical Plant business in Detroit and my great-grandfather founded a successful brass business in Cleveland). What inspires us to keep going is our customers’ loyalty and the relationships we have built with our patrons.

One sign these days of a thriving retail establishment is the number of “likes” and comments posted to the company’s Facebook page. The Sarkisians have this and more going on. Mary explained, “We are increasing our marketing to reach a broader area and also utilize social media outlets more (FACEBOOK, Twitter, UbanSpoon, Foursquare, etc) to attract new customers.”

Park Square Cellar provides top-notch service because word-of-mouth referrals and business

networking helps to drive their business to the next level. The Sarkisians encourage patrons to “Spread the word - through every means. We have a ‘Feeling Social/Connect with Us’ card we give to our customers. Patrons can join our Cellar Club and post online reviews (UrbanSpoon, Yelp, Google places, etc). For this they receive a free dessert on their next visit. When they join the Cellar Wine/Beer/Bistro Club, customers receive monthly discounts and special offerings such as wine/beer of the month or a 10% bistro card. We gain their loyalty and repeat business.”

The couple believes Park Square Cellar strengths to be “excellent service, superior food and beverages, and the 425+member Cellar Wine/Beer/Bistro Club.” They explained, “We live and work within our community. Our professional and personal lives are intertwined. Our loyal customers we deem as our good friends. We strive to sell the best possible food, wine and beverages. We only buy fresh produce and meats - no flash frozen products. Most of our wines come from small boutique wineries.”

As for advice to other owners, they suggest, “Look for ways to gain repeat business. Our Cellar Club has been an excellent source for guaranteed business. It creates customer loyalty and well as providing guaranteed monthly income for the business.”

Chamber membership especially brings great benefits. Mary said, “The Chamber is an excellent source of knowledge and networking. From attending seminars like ‘How to Wow’ to better your business to socializing with the YP (Young Professional) Group for networking with other area businesses, members have a chance to use the Chamber as a valuable resource. We are honored to be a part of the Greater Brandon Chamber - a 5-Star Nationally recognized Chamber - which offers so much to its members. “

u.S. Army Iraq War veteran Juan Ramos had been searching for a new place to put his business administration skills

to work in. He knew he wanted to open a pizza shop, but though his excitement ran high and he wanted to get started quickly, it was a while before he found something he thought he could feel truly passionate about. “I wanted something I could be proud of,” he said as he detailed his journey.

Well, he finally sunk his teeth into a slice of pie from a New York Pizza establishment and thought, “It was the best pizza I ever tasted in my life.” Now, here we are from FOCUS, ready to see what New York Pizza has to offer.

If the pizza at New York Pizza had a trump card, Juan thought it would have to be the cheese. “They make the best stuff on the market,” he said of the Grande brand cheese that he uses exclusively. “If you taste this and then you go down the street [to another pizza place], you’ll taste the difference,” he said.

But the cheese isn’t the only thing that sets his food apart. Every pizza is stretched and made to order, and then cooked in the

restaurant’s brick oven. Great care is taken to make sure everyone knows they are dining out for something special- and that no one is reminded of fast-food pizza.“ A lot of big chains have lost those qualities that make the difference,” he said, noting how some companies do things like carry extra dough over from day to day and freeze some of their ingredients for convenience.

We sat down at a polished cherry-wood table and tried a slice of Cheese and Pepperoni. Well, Juan was right. The cheese is incredible. It’s rich and mild- not tart, not buttery. A thick layer covered the crust all the way up to the edges- there’s just a big melted load of hot, stringy, bold-flavored cheese over the house-made sauce on the thin crusted pizza. I added some grated Parmesan, dried red chili pepper flakes, and garlic powder to bring the stakes up a notch, and it delivered. From 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. try the lunch special: any two slices plus a drink (Coke fountain drinks which include Mellow Yellow). Lunch Special selections rotate throughout the week and usually include Supreme, Meat Lover’s, Cheese, Pepperoni, and according to Juan, “Sometimes we’ll switch it up and make a Sicilian, or we’ll just get funky with the toppings.”

Check out New York Pizza’s Loyalty Program, where for every dollar one spends, they earn points toward free food. “A lot of customers love it,” Juan said. “They rack up the points fast and then when they come in they get a free meal.”
