Hi folks...
...and welcome to the June issue of Focus Around.
As we move into Summer we are getting back to some form of normality after the abundance of Bank Holidays over the last two months.
We took the opportunity to grab a break during that time which has set us up nicely to push forward in the rest of this year.
During the Summer many local community groups run vital fundraising events for their organisations. Keep an eye on our Community Noticeboard pages for details of any galas or fetes in your area. These are usually good fun so why not pop along, have a day out and help your local community into the bargain!
If you are involved in a local not-for-profit group and want to publicise your organisation or any event you are holding just contact us and we’ll do our best to promote it in Focus Around.
Also in our next issue we are looking to include a special feature on activities during the school holidays. If you have a business providing such activities (kids play area, tourist attraction etc.) and would like to advertise in this special feature please contact us for details.
In the meantime enjoy the long (and hopefully warm & sunny) summer days!
RegardsSteve

Daft as a Brush Charitable Trust was founded by Brian Burnie to provide free transport for Cancer outpatients that, because of their illness, have to undergo Chemotherapy and/or Radiotherapy treatment. There is no charge to thepatients for the service that entails collecting and transporting the patients in a safe and comfortable environment from where they are living, taking them to where they will be having their treatment and, if required, staying with the patient whilst they have their treatment and then bringing them back home.
The patient's transport is a fleet of brand new Nissan NV 200 seven seater people carriers that are staffed by two persons, a Chauffeur and a Companion. The target/goal is to create a world-class organisation that is capable of transporting 50,000 cancer patients per year.
If you are interested in becoming a VOLUNTEER either visit our website www.daftasabrush.org.uk to download an application form or send us a stamped addressed envelope to 3-5 Hood Street, 1st Floor Grainger Chambers, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6JQ or call in to our Hood Street office (we are between the Vivienne Westwood shop and the Newcastle Building Society branch on the first floor) to have an informal chat with one of our staff. LEGAL MATTERS
emmersonssolicitorsby Jacqueline Emmerson
www.emmersons-solicitors.co.uk
There are many issues to consider when you first separate.
However, of great importance something which should be considered in the first instance is this: Most couples when buying their home buy it as joint tenants. Most of my clients when asked don’t even realise this. The consequence is that when one you dies the other automatically in-herits the entire house. This is the case even if you make a will stating otherwise. To avoid this you need to sever the joint tenancy. This is a straightforward procedure. It means that you then each own a share of the house which you can leave to family members other than your spouse/civil partner.
If you are going to do this you must also at the same time make a will excluding your spouse, otherwise they would automatically inherit your estate in any event as your next of kin. These are issues which should be considered as soon as it becomes evident that you and your spouse/civil partner have decided topermanently separate.
The whole idea of making your new will is to protect your share of the house. In many cases clients will choose to leave their share of the house to their children or their parents. You should sign a separate document at the same time as executing your will explaining that you do not wish to leave your estate to your spouse. This makes your intentions clear and would be taken into account by the court if your spouse/civil partner challenged your estate. They are likely to do this prior to a finalfinancial settlement being reached between you upon divorce/dissolution.
Handy hints for separating couples
Many couples will have joint bank accounts. This is fine whilst you are still in a relationship. However, after separation one party mayremove large sums of money from a jointaccount which could leave the other struggling financially. Under the circumstances it would be better for you to discuss the matter and agree that each can take a certain amount from the account. This would be pending a finalfinancial settlement. Thereafter the account should be frozen so that no further monies can be removed until a settlement has been reached.
In some cases one party will cause a jointaccount to become overdrawn. Unfortunately the other party is just as liable to pay back the debt to the bank. If you think that there is any danger of this happening ask the bank to freeze the account. Advise them in writing (and keep a copy of the letter) that no further funds are to be removed.
Finally, don’t forget to inform the council tax department that your partner is no longerliving with you. If you are the only adult left in the house you will be entitled to the single persons discount.
