FMP and Me… People are asking: “What is FMP and what does it mean to me?”

“FMP” is the EB acronym for the Facility Master Plan and it is our vision for how Quonset Point and Groton are going to physically expand to meet the increase in production volume for the Virginia Block 5 Payload Module (VPM) and the Columbia SSBN Program (formerly ORP) in the years ahead. The changes at both facilities will be significant: the current plan for QP includes the relocation of Roger Williams Way to

create a larger waterfront “campus”, as well as several new buildings that eventually may add up to 500,000 square feet of new production space over the next 10 years

detail design for a new module transport barge (to supplement Sea Shut-tle) has been put out to bid – the barge will have twice the capacity of the Sea Shuttle

the plan for Groton includes a new production facility in the South Yard for Columbia Class construction and a new floating drydock for launch-ing Columbia

As you might imagine, facility changes of this magnitude will require exten-sive coordination with Navy, federal, state & local officials, as well as a host of contractors for the design and construction of these new facilities. Few at Quonset would argue that facility expansion needs to start as soon as possible so teams are already in place, working on the details for these new facilities. Over the next few months, plans for the first new building at QP will be firmed-up so that design of this building can begin, after which the manage-ment team will be able to share the details. It is expected that ground for this building will be broken within a year. With all this expansion there will also be challenges – most importantly, construction of these new facilities can’t impact performance on our existing Virginia Class work. So, what does FMP mean to me? It means that our business is growing and if we achieve our performance goals, we’ll all have plenty of work for the fore-seeable future…

Facilities Update - The Nuclear Pipe Shop

To accommodate additional work we are expanding the Nuclear Pipe Shop. Here is the 3 phase plan:

Phase 1 – Rearrangement of the Existing Nuclear Pipe

This phase has been designed to create the space needed to support current D904 Nuclear Pipe Shop hiring plans in the current space constrained shop. The expansion of production space into the current supervisor office and Test Space, which will be used for small pipe detail fabrication, will in-crease the area to nearly 9,000 square feet.

Phase 2 – Relocation of the Electric Shop

The next phase relocates the D903 Electrical Shop from its current location to the former MDC across the courtyard. This increases the Electrical Shop from its current 22,000 to 26,000 square feet, an increase of 18%.

Phase 3 – Relocation of the Nuclear Pipe Shop

This phase of this project relocates the Nuclear Pipe Shop from its current location to the former Electrical Shop. This will more than double the shop’s size from its post-Phase 1 area of 9,000 to 22,000 square feet. This space is required to support reducing D904 backlog associated with materi-al availability issues and increase the packaging footprint.

2017 Junkyard WARS Competition

This year a record 39 teams reg-

istered, including 5 teams from

Quonset Point. This year's com-

petition, held on March 9, 2017,

featured a mix of pinewood der-

by and shuffleboard in a mar-

riage of Electric Boat's history

and its future. The course con-

sisted of a ramp leading down

from a scaled 260 building onto

a flat scoring area. The ramp was

meant to serve as a slipway for

the "launching" of teams' vehi-

cles. Each team was allowed to

build two vehicles to represent

Electric Boat's commitment to

build two submarines per year.

The competition featured two

teams facing off against each

other. Teams alternated launch-

ing their two vehicles to attempt

to score points or to knock other

teams' vehicles out of position.

At the end of each round, scores

were totaled based on the vehi-

cles' positions on the course.

Congratulations to all competitors.

ECSA NEWS - Sad News

Bowling League End of Season Pizza Party

The First Shift League would like you to join them on March 29, 2017

@KB Bowl on Post Road right after work.

The cost is $20.00 for 3 games, shoes and pizza. If you do not want to

bowl, the cost will be $10.00 for just pizza.

(SORRY NO ONE ADMITTED WITHOUT A TICKET)

This will be the end of our 13th year and we have 16 openings for any-

one thinking of joining the league next year. Come out and try it - it’s a

great way to relax after work with your co-workers!

If interested you may contact Frank Hehl, Jenn Peckham (dept. 904 Pipe

Shop) or anyone else that is on the bowling league!

For the last 30 years, the South Providence Neighborhood Ministries has been our

toy raising destination. The ECSA received a letter from the organization this

week. Apparently, the Calvary Baptist Church basement that they have been using

for their children's program doesn't meet the DCYF standard because there are no

windows that open up to the outside. The waiver that they previously received

from DCYF has been denied and the SPNM has been looking for a new location

to move to, but without success. The decision to close their doors is in part be-

cause of the location's deficiencies but also because of the reduced stream of grants

and revenue. The ECSA will try and come up with a new plan for the 2017 holi-

day season and will keep you informed of that status.

EB Connections:

Linking Past, Present &

Future The company kicked off EB Connec-

tions, an employee-communications

initiative designed to establish a link

between past accomplishments, current

performance and future promise last

Friday.

The first event was tied to an historical

achievement that occurred 58 years ago

when the Electric Boat-built USS Skate

became the first submarine to surface at

the North Pole.

“The spirit of innovation behind Skate’s

accomplishment is alive at Electric Boat

as we strengthen the Virginia program’s

standing as a model of acquisition ex-

cellence, and continue development of

the Columbia Class,” said Chief Operat-

ing Officer Kurt Hesch.

All three shifts at QP received their

commemorative card, hard hat sticker

and breakfast bar last Friday and both

yards will discuss the event at this

weeks Crew Talks.
