Casing Hangers

casing hanger  (n.) - Mechanism that locks into the casing head, responsible for hanging the casing pipe.

Developed to last 20 years with proper maintenance, FMC’s casing hangers are available to fit a multitude of well environments. Slip hangers seal automatically or manually, depending on the types of seals integral to their installation.

C-21 & C-24Designed with a "Type H" seal ring as a feature, these manual casing hangers are designed to use the seal as an additional packoff (which is independently installed) to provide an energized seal. These hangers fit standard FMC wellheads and can be lowered through the BOP before or after the cement has been set. With easily engaging, latching cap screws, the C-21 & 24 casing hangers are quick to install.

Designed with a "Type H" seal ring as a feature, these manual casing hangers are designed to use the seal as an additional packoff (which is independently installed) to provide an energized seal. These hangers fit standard FMC wellheads and can be lowered through the BOP before or after the cement has been set. With easily engaging, latching cap screws, the C-21 & 24 casing hangers are quick to install.

C-22 & C-29Adaptable to all C-22 and C-29 casing heads, the C-22 slip hanger is designed to suspend average casing loads. This type of hanger provides automatic packoff sealing at only 50,000 pounds of casing load. It is also suitable for short casing or lightly loaded applications.

Lowered through the BOP and landed either before or after the cement has set, the C-22 incorporates a spring-loaded latch, interlocking slips, and a heavy-duty hinge into its efficient design. The slips engage the casing evenly, thus distributing the casing load equally to the bowl of the casing head. Enhanced over time to become an industry standard, this hanger is available for off-the-shelf delivery.

C-121S The C-121S casing hanger is made for a C-29 casing spool to hang heavy casing loads in potentially harsh environments. Difficult applications include high pressure, high temperature, or highly concentrated chlorides or H2S situations.

With two options for packoff energization, this hanger can be used to meet a multitude of needs to suit your specific operation. Similar to our standard casing hanger product family, the C-121S has a split-bowl

Page 3: FMC Conventional Wellhead Breakdown

design with a compression packoff above the slips, and it incorporates locking slip segments with a non-extrusion plate.

C-122 & C-129This line of casing hangers takes on a higher load capacity than our standard product line. When drilling in HP/HT environments, the C-122 & 129 slip hangers can provide additional features, like automatic packoff sealing.

Compatible for use in C-22-EG, C-29, and C-29-ET casing spools, the C-122 and C-129 casing hangers use tangential bolting as a means of incorporating the split-bowl design. The patented non-extrusion plate further enhances the sealing capability of the hanger under both light and heavy casing loads, for a design life of up to 20 years.

C-229Designed specifically to fit FMC’s C-29-ET casing heads and spools, the C-229 casing hanger handles extreme casing loads and pressures. Similar to the C-121S, the harsh environments for which the C-229 is suitable are high H2S, chlorides, and HP/HT. The automatic packoff sealing that comes from the extensively tested elastomer seals is located above the slips, and incorporates the split-bowl design.

Casing Heads

casing head   (n.) - The lowest part of the wellhead that is almost always connected to the surface casing string, and provides a means of suspending and packing off the next casing string.

Page 4: FMC Conventional Wellhead Breakdown

Providing attachment to the surface casing string through the type of bottom connection (Slip-on-weld, threaded, Sliploc), the casing head is typically qualified to withstand up to 10,000 psi working pressure. It suspends the casing and packs off the next casing string while providing annular outlets, as well as supporting the BOP while drilling the remaining stages.

C-22-EGAccepting the C-21 and C-22 –type casing hangers, the standard C-22-EG head is an API standard. It eliminates the need for lockdown screws to retain the bowl protectors, creating fewer leak paths. The bottom prep of the casing head can be machined to fit a variety of applications.

The straight bowl design prevents the wedge-locking of bowl protectors, casing hangers, and test plugs, simplifying the installation process. Like all FMC casing heads, the C-22-EG has the option of a detachable base plate, another time-saving feature.

Safety: No need to work under a suspended BOP.

C-29With a deeper bowl than a C-22 style casing head, the C-29 accepts the C-29 and C-24-model casing hangers. An API standard, this model is ideal for heavier loads than the C-22- bowl family.

C-29-ETThe C-29-ET is compatible with the C-29 and C-24 casing hangers because it is part of the C-29 product line. With multiple lockdown screws in the top flange, it retains the hanger and can be used to energize the hanger packoff seal. (16" SOW x 16-3/4" 5K & 20" SOW x 21-1/4" 5K)

Casing Spools

casing spool (n.) - Equipment responsible for hanging the next casing string.

Designed with a bowl containing a load shoulder, each casing spool in the wellhead stackup hangs each casing sting after the casing head and before the tubing head. The bottom prep of the spool has been engineered to contain a packoff seal and flange for either a clamp-hub or a standard flange connection. For annular access, either studded or line pipe outlets can be machined into the spool.

Providing a controlled bore in the top bowl for the casing hanger seal, it also provides a seal in the bottom bowl to pack off the previous casing string and isolate the ID seals from internal casing pressure. An additional function of the casing spool is to allow for testing BOPs while drilling, retaining the bowl protector, and pressure-testing casing seals through a test port.

Page 6: FMC Conventional Wellhead Breakdown

C-22-EGThis straight-bowl casing spool eliminates the need for lockdown screws to retain the bowl protector, creating fewer leak paths than other standard casing spools and prevents wedge-locking of pressure-energized parts (hangers, test plugs). This model accepts C-21, C-24, and C122 casing hangers, and is formulated for use with C-22-BOP test plugs.

Threaded, studded, or flanged outlets can be machined to access the annulus, depending on your well. Bottom prep options range from metal seals to proprietary non-metallic seals, also determined by your well conditions and requirements.

C-29 & C-29-ETIndustry standard C-29 bowl sizes are found in both the C-29 and the C-29-ET, the –ET version designed to utilize lockdown screws in the top flange. Lockdown screws retain the hanger and energize the integral packoff seal. With a bowl deeper than that of the C-22 product line, these spools accept all HP/HT developed casing hangers, and are available with one of several bottom prep options, ranging from elastomer bushings to rough casing metal seals.

Secondary Seals

Page 7: FMC Conventional Wellhead Breakdown

Secondary seals are used to seal around the production casing stub in the bottom of the bowl of the tubing head. The various types are described below:

Double FS-SealsThis design consists of two elastomer-shaped seals located in grooves in the bottom of the tubing head. A seal is achieved by interference of the seal with the outside diameter of the casing and the bottom or OD of its retaining groove. A spring molded in each inside corner of the seal provides an anti-extrusion mechanism when sealing against pressure by bridging the gap between the tubing outside diameter and casing head seal bore. The shape of the seal allows it flexibility to maintain sealing interference with the large variations in tubing outside diameter.

PI-SealsThese seals consist of a T-cap seal element, nonextrusion rings and a receiver ring. These components will fit the HPE bottom prep configuration. The PI seal is designed for use up to 15,000 psi working pressure and temperatures up to 75°F or as low as -50°F, depending on the elastomer selected. It provides the proper compression and squeeze even with the larger API casing tolerances. The design effectively intensifies the annulus pressure and thus the internal stress in the elastomer to minimize the effects of explosive decompression.

SBMS-II SealsThis metal-to-metal seal consists of a "U"-shaped ring with a "bump" sealing surface at the outside and inside legs of the "U." When installed, the entry ramp compresses the legs of the "U" inward and creates contact stress in each "bump" that provides the seal. This seal requires the casing stub OD to be field machined after the casing is hung to provide the proper sealing tolerances and surface finish. This is accomplished with a portable pneumatic-driven tool. It is good for

Page 8: FMC Conventional Wellhead Breakdown

temperatures ranging from -75°F to 1200°F.

RCMS SealsThe Rough Casing Metal Seal (RCMS) is designed to use up to 20,000 psi. This seal does not require special machining of the casing stub; is compatible with temperatures from -20°F to 350°F in corrosive environments; does not require special installation tools and is simple to install; is NACE compatible; is compatible with casing spool and tubing spool strength; is compatible with casing string strength properties.

Tubing Hangers

tubing hanger (n.) - Mechanism used to hang the tubing from within the tubing head by means of a thread.

These load-bearing devices are installed in the top bowl of the tubing head and are run through the BOP. Also doubling as a means to access and manipulate additional smaller tubing lines that are utilized downhole and extended to the surface on the outside of the tubing string(s). Available for any type of single/multiple completion, most FMC tubing hangers accept a BPV that seals the tubing bore. Some hangers are ported for hydraulic control lines, SSSV’s, or other types of completion equipment.

Tubing Head Adapters

Page 10: FMC Conventional Wellhead Breakdown

tubing head adapter (n.) - Equipment used to adapt the uppermost connection of the tubing head to the lowermost section of the tree.

Providing a transition from the wellhead to the tree, the tubing head adapter is used for both single and multiple completions. FMC’s standard tubing head adapter product line consists of nine models, each designed to work with a set group of tubing heads and hangers. With threaded, flanged, or studded-top connections, most adapters can be machined with a hydraulic supply inlet for downhole control lines.

A-4 & A-4-MA simple transition piece between the wellhead and the tree, the adapter hangs no load nor provide a controlled seal bore. The smooth seal bore on a tubing head is used when tubing is suspended from the tubing hanger. For low-pressure completions, these tubing hangers are not designed for tubing string manipulation or control lines.

The A-4-M uses a metal seal, whereas the A-4 uses elastomer sealing technology; and is used with the TC-1A-EMS hanger. The A-4 adapter can be used with virtually any tubing hanger configuration.

B-2/P, B-1, & A-4-DConsidered "seal bore adapters" these products have the inside diameter (ID) machined to provide a controlled seal bore for an "extended-neck" tubing hanger or seal nipple. Capable of possessing a test port and/or a hydraulic supply inlet for control lines, seal bore adapters are more commonly used in advanced applications.

The B-2/P adapter fits with the TC-1A tubing hanger family, whereas the B-1 can be used with or with out a coupling. The A-4-D is intended for use with a dual completion, most often using the wedge tubing head, the TC-WD-ET.

BO-2 & BO-10Known as the coupling-type adapters, the BO-2 and BO-10 provide a means to suspend the tubing in conjunction with a special coupling. Creating a lower connection for the tubing head and an upper connection for the tree, the coupling also accepts a BPV.

High-pressure completions requiring tubing manipulation through a wrap-around packoff, needing a BPV, or an inlet for control lines, work well with a coupling adapter. With an ACME thread machined into the adapter’s bottom ID to be utilized in conjunction with the coupling, the adapter can be installed. In addition, when a tree is trimmed for critical service (H2S, chlorides), using the coupling adapter with a coupling nut prevents galling of threads between the adapter and coupling on makeup, a feature provided by FMC.

The BO-2 is installed as an entire assembly by rotating it onto the

Page 11: FMC Conventional Wellhead Breakdown

coupling, and is used as a studded top connection only. The BO-10 installs without the rotation of the tree, and is also solely a studded top connection.

A-3-EC & A-5-ECThe Electro-submersible Pump (ESP) adapters, designed with seal bores, accommodate both a tubing hanger neck seal and an electrical power feed-through device. Standard ESP adapters are equipped with rotating flanges to makeup to the tubing head, to minimize alignment concerns. By nearly eliminating the concern for proper alignment, the ESP hanger and tubing head flange are much simpler to install. The ESP product family is available for 3,000 – 5,000 psi applications.

Tubing Heads

tubing head (n.) - Equipment attached to the casing spool used to hang the tubing (smallest casing string) and seal the annulus between the tubing and casing.

The top spool on a wellhead assembly contains the highest pressure in the wellhead, and contains a load shoulder to hang the tubing hanger and tubing string. When the well is completed, the tree is installed on top of the head with a tubing head adapter. Providing a means to support and test the BOPs while completing the well, the tubing head is a necessary component when drilling and completing a well. The standard tubing head product line combines a straight-bore profile with a varied number of aligning pins, depending on the

Page 12: FMC Conventional Wellhead Breakdown

chosen model. FMC’s tubing heads eliminate the “wedge-locking” of the bowl protector, BOP test plugs, and tubing hangers. As additional advantages, valve removal (VR) threads are standard on all flanged or studded tubing head outlets, and if a 9” or larger top flange is required, the C-29 casing hanger can be used for casing-type completions.

lockdown screw (n.) - A mechanism that actuates the hanger/packoff seals in the event of annulus pressure, preventing casing movement caused by thermal expansion during production

Bottom ConnectionsBolt-through flange, studded flange and clamp-hub connections are available. The type and pressure rating used must match the top flange of the previous casing spool or crossover flange. Bolt-through flange connections are the most popular and economical type of connection in certain parts of the world. Clamp-hub connections are sometimes specified, because they are much faster to make up and because they reduce the diameter and weight of the assembly when space limitations are present.

Top ConnectionsFMC Surface Wellhead tubing heads have either bolt-through flange or clamp-hub top connections, which are compatible with all FMC tubing head adapters. The producing pressure of the well normally determines the pressure rating of the top connection.

TC-ETWith one aligning pin, the TC-ET accepts all of the standard "TC" tubing hangers, with the exception of a dual-completion hanger. Utilizing elastomer seal technology, the TC-ET can be machined with one or two seals in the bottom prep, depending on your operational requirements.

More economical to recondition after well abandonment, the TC-ET is designed with a straight bowl for maximum efficiency.

TCM-ETDesigned for use with a metal seal, the TCM-ET uses no aligning pins. The option exists, however, to add multiple aligning pins to convert the TCM-ET into the TC-60 or WD-ET for dual completions.

Page 13: FMC Conventional Wellhead Breakdown

TC-60-ETA model designed for versatility, the TC-60-ET is one of the most widely used tubing heads in the oilfield. Three aligning pins offer compatibility to either single or dual completion, even in tight-delivery situations. No machining modification is required to adapt this tubing head to your well, regardless of the change in circumstances.

TC-WD-ETThe "WD" designation in this tubing head indicates a wedge configuration. The wedge is used for alignment on specific types of FMC tubing hangers, with this particular design allowing for the alignment of multiple-string tubing hangers without external manipulation methods. Like all FMC tubing heads, the TC-WD-ET is of a straight-bore design, more economical to recondition after abandonment.
