Step 1: Parts for simple driver
These are the parts that you need for a simple fly back driver. The pros are thatit's simple to build and lasts a long time. The cons are that it doesn't make as bigsparks as solid-state drivers, and it's very noisy.
Parts:1- 5 volt relay?- wires1- 6 volt power source1- fly back transformer with pins identified1- on/off switch (optional)
Tools:1- soldering iron1- solder wire1- helping hands station (optional)
This is the schematic for the simple driver. Just wire the relay like the picture hasit. The two wires sticking on the bottom is what you connect to the power sourceand transformer. Just follow schematic #2 to see how to connect it all.
Step 3: Parts for solid state flyback driver
These are the parts that you need for the solid state driver. The pros are that itmakes bigger sparks. The cons are that it's harder to make.

Parts:1- 6 volt power source1- on/off switch (optional)1- fly back transformer with pins identified1-555 timer ic1-power transistor (see schematic and text file)1-0.01 uf capacitor?-resistors (it depends on whether you use the schematic or my info in the textdocument)?- wires

see what happens if you add a film capacitor across the +V and the positiveend of the flyback. i did this with a very similar circuit with a ignition coil and itgave me much better output (from <1mm sparks to 20 mm long sparks)

In parallel. That way you make a L1 tank circuit. It has to be well tunedso first without it figure out how many turns gives you the most output,then start adding various film or MKP capacitors to see what worksbest.
That wasn't exactly my original idea but it will do exactly the samething.

Hmm... Yeah, I saw this configuration on the ZVS circuit.
I might give it a try but people don't want me to play with high voltage...
But it's so much fun... :( I guess I'll have to go with second best andwatch photonicinduction's videos. :)

Does the capacitor have to be a 0.01uf or can it be bigger?
for the solid state one, it could be different, but the frequency wouldchange.

Would any old power transistor work? I've taken apart quite a few powersupplies form things lately and have a couple dozen transistors/MOSFETs thatare attached to heatsinks.

they should work, but I recommend that you look up datasheets forthem and see what their ratings are

Thanks, I was also wondering, I have this capacitor(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af1/XOIIO/IMG_02061_zps498ff924.jpg),should that work fine? I'm not sure if I need a DC or AC capacitor, and Imay not be able to find one, would it work without the capacitor?

if it's for the solid state circuit, then yes it has to be a DC cap, also if it'sfor the solid state one, then it needs a capacitor for timing.

woa siiiiick ima make this issht son im working on a battery powered tesla coilrite now im gonna post that when i get done. im trying to make a big mineral oilcap to hold alotta charge right now

The circuit in step2 is very similar to the old "vibrators" they use to use inVacuum tude car radios, so us dinosaurs could listen to our music. A smallcapacitor .1uF or so across the relay contacts might make it last longer ( keepsthe arcing down). Good job on the 'able. Cheers !
