Division Bioeconomy Energy Technology Center Fluid Catalytic Cracking Micro Activity Test unit Catalytic upgrading of biooils can be studied in the FCC MAT unit at RISE ETC. FCC is a very important refinery process and FCC MAT units are commonly used to study e.g. catalyst activity according to ASTM standardized methods. The FCC MAT unit at ETC is specially designed to allow co-refining experiments of biooils and fossil oils. Description of the unit Two syringe pumps are used to feed the oil/-s to the reactor. Inside the reactor, the oils are upgraded in contact with the fixed catalyst bed in a flow of nitrogen. The liquid products are then condensed in cooled glass vessels, and the reaction gas is collected and analysed via µ-GC. After the experiment, solid products inside the reactor are combusted with air and the effluent CO 2 is quantified, allowing a mass balance of the system to be performed. Up to seven consecutive experiments of this type can be performed in an automatic sequence. The formed products can then, if desired, be subjected to detailed characterization. Examples of research topics • Upgrading of various biooils • Co-refining of biooils with fossil feedstock • Catalyst development • Catalyst poisoning and deactivation • Identification of possible operating problems Contact Linda Sandström Telephone: +46-10-516 61 80 E-mail: [email protected] ID: 1852 RISE RESEARCH INSTITUTES OF SWEDEN Division Bioeconomy Energy Technology Center ADDRESS Industrigatan 1 Box 726, SE-941 28 Piteå, Sweden CONTACT +46 10 516 50 00 [email protected], www.ri.se The RISE institutes Innventia, SP and Swedish ICT have merged in order to become a stronger research and innovation partner for businesses and society.
