47TH ANNUAL EXHIBITION
1949-1997
April18 · May 9, 1997
FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP,~ VENICE ART CENTER 390 NOKOMIS A VENUE SOUTH * VENICE, FL 34285
FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP,~ PURPOSE The Florida Artist Group was incorporated as a non-profit organization of practicing artists who had gained recognition nationally or state-wide and whose work would contribute significantly to its exhibitions. The purpose is the stimulation of finer standards of the creative effort within the State of Florida.
ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM Since 1949, the Florida Artist Group has held a symposium and a members' exhibition each year in a different Florida city. Its education and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions, films and exhibits.
In addition to the Symposium and Exhibition held in the Spring, area exhibitions and meetings are sponsored at other times in various places in the state. The nature of these meetings follows, in a small way, the character of the Spring meeting. They also serve to bring the members of the organization more closely together.
JURIED SHOWS The annual exhibition is juried for awards. The organizatio w1ys brings in an eminent juror from out-of-state who is pri ily associated with art administration, education or a painter or scu r of national repute. Past locations of exhibitions have included the Norton Gallery, Ringling Museum, Cummer Gallery of Art, the Jacksonville Art Museum, Miami Metropolitan Museum and the Lowe Museum, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Rollins College, Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences and many other outstanding galleries.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The Florida Artist Group's changes through the years are a result of
deaths, inactive status and resignations ... but most importantly, because of new members welcomed each year to add to our list of an active, professional and participating membership.
We must continue to remain an exceptional organization, going forward in our visions, actions and accomplishments.
The Board of Directors and I are grateful to Connie Q. Heller, Symposium Chairman and Area Ill Chair, and to those persons from her area who assisted her in presenting this annual event.
We are also indebted to Katharine Lee for jurying for awards; to the generosity of our sponsors, old and new, for their awards; and to the officers and members of the magnificent new Venice Art Center for the exhibition space.
I especially wish to thank all of you who were able to attend this 47th Symposium and hope that those of you who were not with us will join us in Jacksonville in 1998.

Juror: Katharine C. Lee Director, Vir~nia Museum of Fine Arts
Richmond, Vir~nia
ABOUT THE JUROR Katharine c. Lee, Director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in
Richmond, Virginia, has a B.A. degree, Magna Cum Laude from Vassar College and a Master of Arts degree from the Department of Fine Arts, Harvard University. In her early career, two fellowships were awarded to her: a Fulbright Scholarship, the Sorbonne Institute of Art and Archaeology, Paris, and a Ford Foundation of Museum Curatorial Training Internship, Toledo Museum of Art. Ms. Lee held the posts of Curatorial Assis
tant and Assistant Curator at the Toledo Museum. She has been closely associated with the University of Chicago in a
wide spectrum of positions: Director of Exhibitions, Renaissance Society of the University; Lecturer, Department of Art, Curator of Collections, David and Alfred Smart Gallery; Assistant Director and Deputy Director, The Art Institute of Chicago.
Ms. Lee has served and is serving on over 20 boards, associations and advisory panels including Accreditation Commission, American Association of Museums; Board of Trustees, Association of Art Museum Directors; National Endowment of the Arts, Museum Programs Review Committee; and Board of Directors, the Trust for Museum Exhibitions.
Ms. Lee, who is fluent in French, German and Italian, also holds a significant number of memberships in both professional and non-professional organizations.
JUROR'S STATEMENT
There are many ways in which people participate in the visual arts; whether they study its history, visit art museums, collect or express themselves as artists through a particular medium. The degree of originality, independence, complexity and satisfaction in these endeavors is as varied as there are visually-minded people.
Pursuing one aspect can be rewarding if one sets standards and has a spiritual and intellectual center of gravity that produces honest results, work and observations that are truly personal.
The Florida Artist Show is full of works that show committment and authenticity. There is a fine range of media and a remarkable variety of approaches. It is apparent that artists in this exhibition find great challenge and, at times, joy in what they do.
My responsibility as a juror is, I believe, to recognize especially strong individual visual statements that, to my eye, have quality and are especially successful in achieving goals and solutions to problems that the artist has set for him or herself. The awards that have been made are, necessarily, personal reactions upon my own professional experience.
It has been a pleasure to participate in your very fine exhibition.
