From minimal emergencywait times and a uniqueprocess for seamless in-

patient care, to a separatecorrections area for localcorrectional patients, Flor-ence Hospital at Anthem(FHA), licensed as a Gen-eral Acute Care Hospital, brings full-service healthcare to Florence, Ariz. Italso brings a deeper sense

of community throughhands-on local involve-ment and white glovetreatment for patients andfamilies.

Unique servicesThe hospital’s trademarkis “door to doc in 31 min-utes™” and its averageEmergency Room (ER)waiting time is expected tobe eight minutes, based onsister property Gilbert Hos-

pital’s statistics. The facil-ity also employs a uniqueprocess for inpatient care.

“We’re known for ourseamless continuity be-tween levels of inpatientcare,” said Amy Jascourt,FHA director of ConsumerAffairs and Marketing.“For example, patientswho are upgraded tointensive care never haveto transfer to an entirelydifferent unit, we simplymove them into an ICUbed. This is healthier andeasier for both patients

and their families.”Because FHA resides

in a town with 13 prisonfacilities, the hospital alsohas a full lock-down correc-tional unit toward the rearof the facility. Designedto meet the needs of itsincarcerated population. The corrections area hasa separate emergency en-trance, ER and ambulance, and follows processes thatnever allow a member ofthe general public to comein contact with an incarcer-ated patient.

Staff and communityteamworkFHA is focused on build-ing a team culture inwhich everyone helpsothers and no job is above

or beneath anyone else’s.This team spirit alsoextends into the com-munity. Before the facilityeven opened, the hospitalbecame involved in thecommunity on a grass-roots level. The staff andleadership participate innumerous events impact-ing the community: golftournament fundraisers,a local kids’ shoppingprogram and health fairsoffering free flu shots, health screenings andblood pressure checks.

Patient care“People tell us our hospi-tals look more like hotelsthan health care facilities,”said Jascourt. “We prideourselves on a warm, com-fortable environment. Evenour rooms are all private, for both inpatient andEmergency Room care.”

Everyone who comesthrough the doors at FHAreceives the “white glovetreatment.” Employees areinstructed to go the extramile and to say yes evenbefore knowing the need.

This is a different ap-proach to a hospital’semergency services.“We do not put people

into waiting rooms.”“We do not rush people

through.”“We do not ask for

insurance information upfront, only for a name andbirth date.”“We do not triage

(emergency) patientsunless we are completelyfull, and then we insistthat a physician and nursedo that together.”

Tim Johns, M.D., emer-gency physician, medicaldirector and a founder ofGilbert Hospital, couldprobably list a few morefactors contributing toemergency services atGilbert and the new Flor-ence Hospital at Anthem, but he’s happier to let thenumbers back him up.

For instance: 31 minutes. That’s the maximum timeemergency patients willwait to see a physician.Patients who need an intra-venous antibiotic will haveit started within 15 minutes.

Those requiring a chest

X-ray will have it com-pleted (and most likelyreviewed, too) within 20minutes. Initial laboratoryblood work will be donewithin 30 minutes.

At least 94 percent ofthe patients seen in thesehospitals’ emergencydepartments will receiveall the care they need atthat hospital.

“When we opened sixyears ago, Arizona hadthe worst wait times (inemergency rooms) in thecountry,” Johns said.“We realized that whenclinicians run the hospital,

things run differently. Webelieve doctors and nursesare the driving piece indelivering (the best) pa-tient care, and we really dolisten to the professionalsat the bedside. We work ina different way.”

“We have a really fierceattention to our teams, andbelieve that our strong teamwork, led by our nurses, makes for superb patientcare,” said Gilbert Hospi-

tal’s Chief Nursing OfficerLaurel Molloy, R.N., M.S.N.

Patients can expect thesame level of care at thenew hospital in Florence, according to Tish Little,R.N., emergency depart-ment manager and directorof clinical services.

“All emergency depart-ment physicians are board-certified, all of our nurseshave solid emergencyexperience with many

certified as emergencynursing specialists; thestaff is simply amazing,”Little said. “The attitude isright, with a general rightnumber of staff-to-patientsratio and state-of-the-artequipment There is alsoa thoroughly-groundedphilosophy that patientswill be seen quickly by aphysician.

“That’s how you provideunparalleled services.”

Meet the staff at Florence Hospital at AnthemThey bring a level of experience and passion for providing the best possible care By Alison stAnton

The staff at Florence Hospital at Anthem is made up of dedicated, caring professionals who truly enjoy the work that they are doing. Here is a brief introduction of some of them

Dr. Anne Borik,Chief of Staff: Dr. Borik, an internal medicine physician at Gilbert Hospital and Florence Hospital at Anthem, moved to Arizona from Pennsylvania in 1995. In 1997, she launched a hospitalist practice; meaning that rather than having an outpatient practice, she works at the two hospitals, making patient rounds twice a day.

“This allowed me to meet the staff, and really get to know everyone who works here, so it was very beneficial to everyone. The insurance companies are also very much in favor of the hospitalist model.”

Every Wednesday at 1 p.m., Borik can be heard on KQCK Live hosting her popular “DocTalk with Dr. Anne Borik” radio show.

Dr. Cruz Franco,Emergency Medicine Chief:Dr. Franco is in his twenty-eighth year in medicine. After complet-ing his residency at the University of Illinois he practiced at several valley hospitals included John C. Lincoln Trauma Center.

Currently the Chief of Staff at Gilbert Hospital, Franco is pleased to be part of a hospital that will provide a valuable and much-needed service to the residents of Florence and the surrounding areas.

“It’s so nice to be part of a new hospital that is conveniently located right in the community, where patients don’t have to travel very far to get to it,” he said. “I’m really excited to have this opportunity.”

Dr. S. Zubair Tahir,Chief of Surgery:Dr. Tahir has worked in the field of medicine for over 30 years. Before moving to Arizona, he practiced in both Pennsylvania and Arkansas.

In his role of Chief of Surgery, Tahir said he is pleased to be helping to build Florence Hospital at Anthem the same way he helped build Gilbert Hospital—by giving patients access to outstanding health care.

“I’m happy to be bringing quality and immediate healthcare to the local community,” he said.

Carolyn Masood,Vice President of Nursing and Regulatory Affairs:Carolyn Masood, who has been with Gilbert Hospital since 2005, is now responsible for the nursing oversight of both Gilbert and now Florence Hospital at Anthem. She oversees policy and processes, helping to develop nursing de-partments and the growth of the Continuous Quality Performance I mprovement programs that ad-dresses the quality of patient care. She also ensures both hospital are in clinical compliance with federal and state regulations.

Masood, who has been a Regis-tered Nurse for 23 years, said she is happy to be part of a community healthcare facility that will have an immediate and positive impact on the people it serves.“I tell my children every day to make a difference in at least one person’s life today, and that’s hon-estly why I became a nurse myself. I wanted to make a difference by touching the lives of those in need and have a profession that I valued. I’m very excited about the new hospital and feel privileged to work for this organization.”

Tish Little,Emergency Department Manager and Chief Nursing Officer:Tish Little, who worked in emer-gency medicine for over 30 years in Canada as well as overseas, was newly retired and had just moved to Arizona when she stumbled upon “an amazing new hospital down the road.”

She went inside to meet the staff at Florence Hospital at Anthem, tell them about her long career in emergency management, and ask about the hospital and emergency room setting. Little said she was so impressed with what she heard that she immediately came out of her short retirement.

“All of the things that I didn’t like about emergency rooms, like long waiting times and not enough beds, all seem to be a non-issue here. The whole philosophy is so refreshing and unbelievable that I just couldn’t resist — I just have to be a part of it.”

Page 7: Florence Hospital at Anthem

Kimberly Fawley,In-Patient and ICU Manager:Kimberly Fawley has been in the medical profession for 16 years. Originally started Nursing Career in Indiana and moved to Arizona in 2010 to expand in her Nursing Career. One of the best parts about working at Florence Hospital at Anthem, she said, is knowing that families from the local area will not have to spend a lot of time traveling to be with their loved ones.

“I am looking forward to the fact that we will be able to keep our patients who require a higher level of care right in their community,” she said. “I’m also glad that this will be one of the first hospitals to have a Multi Organized Service Unit — also known as MOSU. This will allow us the opportunity to work with many levels of nursing care.”

Brenda Ortiz,Corrections Manager of In-patient/ER/ICU:Brenda Ortiz, she has 15 years of experience in Correctional Medi-cine and 12 years in Acute Care. She started with Florence Hospi-tal at Anthem December 2011.

“I will be working with the security agencies in assuring that the inmates, staff, and public are kept safe while at FHA. I also oversee that the staff adhere to policies, procedures, and state/federal regulations at the hospital; ensuring that the patients receive the best medical care possible.”

Ortiz originally started her career in nursing in 1988. She said the people that she works with — both her co-workers and the patients — are what keeps her happily coming back to work every day.

“I enjoy them, and I enjoy helping our patients and making sure they are getting the best medical care possible.”

Zenji Reynolds,Director of Radiology:Zenji Reynolds, director of Radiol-ogy at Florence Hospital at An-them, is no stranger to the health field, having been in medicine since 1994.

His years of experience haven’t quieted his passion for helping others.

“I am looking forward to providing service to a new and growing community,” Reynolds said. “I am looking forward to growing with this company and being an integral part of a friendly and wonderful healthcare service.”

Reynolds is also a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.

Sandy Peek,Surgery Manager:Sandra Peek has been in nursing since 2006. Areas of experience range from Med/Surg, Telemetry, ICU, Cardiac Cath Lab and Sur-gery. Started with Gilbert Hospi-tal in 2008 and recently transfer-ring facilities to participate in the development and success of Florence Hospital at Anthem.

Peek stated she is very excited to help participate in starting a new hospital and to see it be as successful as Gilbert Hospital. Knowing that the people she works with and the positive at-titude from everyone, she feels Florence Hospital of Anthem will be very successful. She believes patients will receive excellent care.

“I have always thought, treat the patient as if he or she was a family member. The best part of being a nurse is at the end of the day you have made a differ-ence. It may be small, the patient might not remember your name, but they will never forget the quality care and compassion they received from their “nurse”.

Scott Bonhus,Director of Pharmacy:For more than 23 years, Scott Bonhus has worked in pharmacy field. While there have been many changes over the years, one thing has remained constant: quality care. Bonhus takes great pride in that!

The opportunity to work in a brand new hospital, serving the Florence community, is exciting for him. “Who doesn’t want to be involved in opening and working in a brand new facility?” Bonhus said. “This is a first for me!”

While Bonhus has many interests outside of the pharmacy field, such as travel, hiking, technology, cars and Mexican culture, it’s the opportunity to make a difference that drives him most. “I enjoy working and collaborating with the other members of the health-care team to help make sure patients get good, safe medication therapy.”

From the «simplest»X-rays to the 64-slice CTscanner to theMRI examscompleted in less than 20minutes, “We have the latestand greatest, from hardwareto software to training that’sahead of the curve,” he said.

Scans are faster and safer, too, since the hospitals’software helps maintain thelowest radiation needed.“The speed in our scans is

Speed in testing helpsassure more rapid patientcare and also means thatpatients have only thetests needed for diagnosisand treatment. “Whenresults are returned soquickly, you know you’lleither reach a diagnosis— or require another test,so you can escalate asneeded,” Reynolds said.

The hospitals also claimearly adapter status in

medical records, withboth implementing elec-tronic records.

“This,” said Gilbert chiefnursing officer Laurel Mol-loy, R.N., M.S.N., “is a toolthat helps us do our jobs —and gives us more time atthe bed side. Technologylike this really enhancesthe level of care.”

For Molloy, this game-changing technology isnot just for show. It’ssaving lives.

“When everything ison a screen, there’s noguessing about whatthe notes mean, or whatmedications are pre-scribed at what dosage,”she said. “Our technologydistinctly enhances thecontinuity and level ofcare given.”

For example, GilbertHospital is involved every yearwith donating bicycles forthe Bikes for Kids event heldthrough the Higley UnifiedSchool District. Gilbert Hospitalstaff donated approximately200 first aid bags to the town ofGilbert’s youth soccer programs.

“A successful event requiresthe assistance and participa-tion of all staff at differentlevels,” she said.

“Once they participate the

By midsummer of thisyear, both Gilbert Hospi-tal and Florence Hospital

at Anthem will be live on apaperless charting systemfor their patients.

Caterina Scianna, Direc-tor of Health InformationManagement at GilbertHospital, said the targeted“go live” date for their newelectronic medical recordis July 1, when they willtransition to what she callsa “paper light” status, withboth hospitals still using asmall amount of paper.

By October, both hospi-tals should be completelyconverted over and working

in a paperless electronicenvironment, Scianna said.

“An electronic environ-ment allows for heightenedpatient safety measuresthroughout the facility andimmediate access to the

patient’s medical record forphysicians who are provid-ing patient care,” Sciannasaid.

“This also allows forthe hospital to releasepatient information in asecure electronic formatto the patient who may

need to provide portionsof their medical record toother physicians or usetheir medical records forpersonal reasons.”

Using electronic medicalrecords will have a positiveimpact on patient care,Scianna said, because itwill allow for heightenedpatient safety measuresthroughout the facilities,

including patient allergychecks for the physicianswhen placing both dietaryand medication orders.

“An electronic record willalso allow for immediate ac-cess to patient’s medical his-tory by all clinicians involvedin the patient’s care.”
