The buildings that occupy the surrounding area that encom-passes our site are varied and diverse; not only in function, butalso in physical appearance. To the immediate left of the site, there is brand new development where there once was a vacant lot. The lots across the street are all commercial businesses ranging from restaurants, to property holding companies.

CONCLUSIONS

Through this project I discovered an area of Florence that I may have never seen. I researched the Novoli site that once housed the heating plant for the Fiat factory. The once proud site is now disintegrating, chipping o", and lacking luster in every form.

Since visiting the site three times, I have made some conclusions as to what I would like to do, what I think should be done, and why I chose the topics I did to analyze. I began my analysis with ciculation and focused on it throughout. I did so because I feel it is a topic that needs improved; and can only be done by repairing the pre-existing infrastructure. Current circulation is con#ned to major roadways, thus limiting foot tra!c and non-vehicular movement. Walkability is a major factor in creting a successful piazza or center. Once this can be accomplished, Novoli may be a site that people will want to visit to shop, to live, or to just spend the day.

I also focused on climate. I feel climate is a big issue in creating a “walkable” area. The weather in Florence is very mild, meaning, it does not get too hot, nor does it get too cold and snow. Intense weather conditions can e"ect the users perception of the area thus limiting usage and popularity. In relation to the sites walkability, I created a chart that highlights the walking times to and from the site. There are plenty of businesses and shops located within the 15 minute walking radius that the site possesses.

In concern to the design of the renovation and the repurposing of the heating plant, I included the local color palette as well as textures found on and around the building. When designing, it is my goal to create something very cohesive and unobtrusive to the area. I felt color palettes were a good way to start. When in the conceptual process, I plan on designing this building to match perfectly to the environment and have it blend, or create something totally di"erent that stands alone aesthetically. Colors were a good way to start with matching, contrasting, and developing a color palette that compliments the pre-exsiting structures and textures.

My underlying goal with this project is to create a walkable functional community area. I plan on doing that by opening up the pre-existing structure, adding more light and function, as well as continuing the green space that exists to the left of the building. Next door there is a wonderful par that needs to be taken advantage of and see more visitors.
