Flipping Your Classroom for Blended Learning
Ideas for Getting Started & Some Resources…Megan M. Trimble
Say Whaaaat is Flipping?• Flipping your classroom means you are making content/lessons your normally
“teach” in-class available outside of the classroom.
• Lessons should consist of short/engaging videos, supplemental resources, and formative/summative assessments.
• Hence, students learn about the subject/topic outside of class leaving time in-class for review, discussion, work on extension activities, etc.
• Does this mean you have to create a video for everything you teach? No.
• The best approach is to start small, get your students comfortable with your online platform/method of delivery.
• Start by putting 1 of your Power-Points out there, linking to a pre-made video online, record 1 class-period, start with giving students an online scavenger hunt or a worksheet to complete, then you can start building your flipped classroom from there…and by doing so you will be providing a blended learning environment.

Flipping Requires a Platform/Method of Delivery:
• What method of delivery are you currently using in/out of network to share files?
Online vs. In-Network vs. Synergy (not flipping)

Stop Here!• If you are not using any of the online platforms on the previous slide, don’t know what the R:Drive is,
and/or you’re only posting attachments to students via Synergy than I recommend you STOP at this slide: *This is still considered “preparing” to flip
– Pick your platform and get your account set-up *(do this during our time and when you’re ready you can continue reading and accessing the information/materials below).
– Spend at least a few days or weeks getting comfortable using your platform (enroll a pretend student if needed)
– Once you’re comfortable then get your students enrolled and begin experimenting with small tasks such as locating files, posting a comment/reply, communicating with you, assign a quiz/poll, etc…
– Keep your platform open on your browser all day and start forcing yourself to post things to it and have students access it daily/weekly until it becomes habit
– This will help you determine if you want to keep it, change-it-up, and what you will do differently next year
– You can’t create/provide content for your students and “flip” your curriculum until you have this piece of the “flipping” game in-place.
– If you need a resource for online platforms talk to your computer teacher and/or a colleague you know uses the platform. Or, enroll in a BVEDTECH basic course… Start small and then build.
* This is where you need to start if you aren’t collaborating with your students online consistently just yet! My personal favorite is EDMODO (hands down)!

Classic (old-school) Tools for Media Creation:
• Just because it’s old…doesn’t mean it doesn’t work and/or isn’t a good place to start flipping. All the following can still be used and formatted for sharing online.
• Video Camera• Digital Camera w/ video recording capabilities• Desktop w/ webcam• Laptop w/ webcam• White Board/mini-lap white boards• Chalk Board• Document Camera• Elmo
• Look around your classroom, ask your colleagues/Administration, librarian, and/or computer teacher for any/all of the above.
• All of the classical tools above can be used for flipping a lesson

Videos & Tutorials• Videos-are just what they sound like... Videos. (There a lot available for free out
there for you to use for education purposes…sometimes it’s best not to re-create the wheel. Use what others have created for you! You can record yourself during a class of your choice, from home, record a Power-Point, have a student record you (assign videographers), have
students create the video, etc.
– Videos can be created using all the old-school resources and/or Web 2.0 tools-publish your final product using Windows Movie Maker (district software), iMovie
• Tutorials-can be created using old-school AND new-school resources. – Many tutorials are available online or create your own using your SMART Board, Doc Cam, Elmo, etc.
• Screen-Casting Software is the best way to create an electronic tutorial.
• There are so many new-school Screen-Casting sites that are free and Web 2.0 options for creating engaging videos/tutorials (which are mostly online and easy to share-out). I’ve compiled some of the best for you here:
