FLIGHT OF "SOYUZ 10"

ABSTRACT. The launching of t he space s ta t i on"Salyut" and i t s docking with the spacecraft "Soyuz

10" i s described. Aft er t h e program of experimentswas completed, "Soyuz 10'' w a s r e tu r n ed t o t h e e a r t h .

In conformance with a program of space re sea rch , an o rb i t a l s c i e n t i f i c

s t a t i o n "Sa lyut " w a s launched i n t he S ov iet Union on Apr i l 19, 1971.

The s t a t i o n was p l aced i n an o r b i t c l ose t o t he ca l cu l a t ed o r b i t with t h e

parameters: maximum di st an ce from th e Eart h's su rf ac e ( at apogee) - 22

On th e 23rd of Ap ri l 1971 a t 2 : 5 4 Moscow t i m e , a r o c k e t c a r r i e r w i t h the

sp ace cr af t qsSoyuz 10'' was launched i n t he So vie t Union, pi lo te d by a crew corn-

p ri se d of t h e sh ip commander, twice Hero of th e Sov iet Union, USSR cosmnaut

On th e 24th of A pr il , 4:47 Moscow t i m e , th e sp acec raf t "Soyuz 10" was

jo ined wi th th e "Salyut" or b i t i ng s t a t io n . The docking process was car r ied out

i n two s t ages . I n the f i r s t s t age , under an au tomati c con t ro l r eg ime, the

cr a f t approached to wi th in 180 meters of th e s t a t io n . Fu r the r app roach a d

be rt hi ng were conducted by th e crew. -3The f l i g h t o f t h e s p ac e s t a t i o n - spa cec raf t system whi le docked

l a s t e d 5 hours and 30 minutes. Dur ing the course of f l i g h t , the onboard system

w a s checked ou t , and dynamic ch ar a ct e r i st ic s were evaluated .

After completing the above experiments, the crew undocked and separated

th e "Soyuz 10'' sh ip f rom t he s t at io n .

I n t h e c ou rs e of t h e j o i n t f l i g h t w i th t h e o r b i t a l s c i e n t i f i c station

"Salyu tP ', se ve r a l s tu d ie s were conducted on ver i f y in g th e opera t iona l & i l i t y

of the sy s e rn f o r in t e r r e l a t ed r e sea rch , and on fu r t he r connect ing , be r th ing ,

docking and , undocking of th e spac ecra f t and or b i t i ng s ta t i on .

Af te r completing th e program of experiments, oper atio ns f o r preparin g for

th e de sce nt of "Soyuz PO" t o Ea rt h were performed. The crew carried out the

necessa ry or ie n t a t io n of t he cr af t , and a t 1:59 Moscow t i m e , t h e r e t r o r o & e t s

w e r e s t a r t e d . Af ter the engine comple ted i t s opera t ion and th e spacec ra f t

sec t io ns were de tached , descent of t he spa cec ra f t t o Ea r th s t a r t e d . After aero-

dynamic braking i n th e atmosphere, th e parachute system w a s p u t i n t o crperatim,

and immediate ly befo re reaching Ear th , th e s o f t landing engine w a s act iva ted .

On 25 April 1971, a t 2:40 Moscow t i m e , a f t ek f u l f i l l i n g i t s p r o g r m o f

s c i e n t i f i c t e c h n i c a l r e s e ar c h w it h t h e $ "S alyutl' s t a t i o n , t h e s p a c e c r a f t

"Soyuz 10" completed a so f t landing in the USSR, 120 kilometers northwest o f

Karaganda.

Research conducted during t h is fl ig ht was one st ep i n a general p r og rm

with the s ci en ti fi c orb ita l station "Salyut".
