Dhinakaran School of Civil Engineering, SASTRA University, Thanjavur, Tamilnadu, India ABSTRACT This paper explores the possibility of using externally bonded Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Polymer (HyFRP) with the combinations glass (GFRP) and carbon (CFRP) based laminate to strengthen the Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams against flexure. For this purpose a total of five beams were cast and tested. The beams were with a cross section of 150 mm × 250 mm and 3000 mm long. Four point loading was applied to test the flexural strength of beams over a simply supported span of 2800 mm. Out of five beams, one beams served as reference specimen and the other four beams were made with hybrid FRP laminates on their soffit. Spacing of stirrups, thickness of HYFRP laminate and composite ratio was taken as varying parameters. Sufficient data was obtained on the strength, deformation and failure characteristics of Hybrid Fibre Reinforced Polymer laminated (HyFRP) as well as reference beams. The Hybrid Fibre Reinforced Polymer (HyFRP) strengthened reinforced concrete beams exhibit increased strength and composite action until failure. Key words: Carbon fibre, deflection, glass fibre, HyFRP, strengthening, stiffness. Cite this Article: N. Sundar, P. N. Raghunath and G. INTRODUCTION Maintenance of concrete structures has become the tougher task today all over the world irrespective of type of construction. Huge amount of money also involved towards maintenance cost of such structures due to deterioration. Now people are thinking about rehabilitation and retrofitting of structural components with number of feasible mechanism by which the structure can restore its functionality. Use of FRP is one such technology and that too FRP laminates bonded externally proved to be a successful means of retrofitting the structure or enhancing the integrity of the structure. Many works were carried out in the area of FRP laminates made with glass, carbon and aramid. Among various types glass fiber reinforced polymer proves to be better and economical also. Hence to optimize the cost and strength factor, use of GFRP/CFRP was undertaken in the present work for evaluating the performance of Hybrid Fibre
