Seven specialist commercial vehicles competed for the two remaining prizes in the Continental Irish

Van of the Year 2014 awards with Toyota and newcomer SsangYong winning the respective Car Derived Van and Commercial SUV categories.

Th e nine voting members of the Irish Motoring Writers’ Association Van Jury chose the latest Toyota Auris (in 5-door CDV form) ahead of the similarly shaped Ford Focus Van, the three-door Hyundai i-Pro and unique Mini Clubvan. Ssangyong Ireland had a two-in-three chance of taking the Commercial SUV accolade with the Korando Commercial

defeating its sister model the Korando Sports Pick-Up truck and the refreshed Mitsubishi Outlander Business (5-door).

In deciding on these category winners, the jury members took into account such att ributes as load capacity, reliability, overall versatility, cost of ownership and drive comfort.

At the presentation of the awards to Ian Corbett , Toyota Ireland, and John Keogh, SsangYong Ireland, Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres Ireland, commented, “In today’s tough commercial vehicle market, these two vehicles have been singled out by the Irish Motoring Writers’ Association

van experts. I am sure that these awards will provide a huge boost for both the Auris Van and Korando Commercial.”

Chairman of the IMWA Van jury Brian Byrne added; “In assessing candidates for the Continental Irish Van of the Year category awards, our jurors pay close att ention to how the vehicles meet the particular requirements of the Irish market – that is why these recommendations are so useful to Irish van/commercial drivers and fl eet managers”.

As mentioned in the previous edition, the latest Mercedes-Benz Sprinter won the overall title, Continental Irish Van of the Year 2014.

A 2.52% increase in Light Commercial Vehicle sales, representing 272 additional units during 2013, following a 4.31% dip in 2012, is a positive move aided by a decrease in private imports (from

428 to 172). From the fi gures outlined below, courtesy of the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry), the top two players changed positions, with Ford regaining the number one slot with 2,541 units sold, ahead of Volkswagen (2,079 units), with Renault maintaining the third step on the podium. In gaining almost 2% market share, Ford Ireland puts its success down to the phasing out of the Stage 5 Ford Transit and the introduction of the all-new Transit Custom (International Van of the Year 2013).

“Irish van drivers and fl eet operators love our vans and it is heartening to see that we have secured the top spot again in the 2013 sales chart,” stated a pleased Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director at Ford Ireland.

Looking down the chart, Toyota while staying at fourth, lost market share as the impact of the new Proace (based on the PSA Peugeot Expert/Dispatch) has yet to reach the popularity of the long serving Hiace. Expect strong demand for the Land Cruiser in the new 5-seater Business Class form and the latest Hilux Pick-Up. Citroën, Nissan and Land Rover increased sales, the latt er making hay while the sun shines on the N1 (Commercial 5-Seater) version of the Discovery.

2014 could turn out to be Ford Ireland’s best ever year as

its LCV off ering will be the broadest and freshest ever. Th e arrival of the new Transit Connect fresh from collecting the International Van of the Year 2014 gong in Moscow is imminent, while in April the new Transit 2-tonne will go on sale with the all-new compact Transit Courier following in May. Th e ‘blue-oval’ brand also off ers tailored fi nance and service packages for the individual and business buyer. A face-l i f ted version of Citroën’s popular Berlingo van has gone on sale,

featuring reduced emissions and fuel consumption, a new gearbox, and more in-cab storage, as well as a revised exterior. Visual updates include a new chrome grille and revised side skirts. Inside, storage space is enhanced with all vans and platform cabs gaining a full-length overhead storage shelf.

Citroën’s automated manual gearbox option has been upgraded to the new ETG6 six-speed unit, off ering improved drivability compared to the previous EGS6. Fuel consumption has been reduced to 5.0l/100km (56.5 mpg) for SWB vans with the HDi 90 engine, while LWB models fi tt ed with

the same engine and ETF6 gearbox return up to 4.9l/100km (57.6mpg). Payloads have also been improved across most models.

For the fi rst time in Ireland, the Berlingo can be ordered in Crew Van and Platform Cab versions. Th e Crew Van off ers seating for up to fi ve and a payload of 722 kg. Available in short and long wheel variants, the Berlingo comes in a choice of two trim levels. 1.6 HDi engines in 75 bhp and 90 bhp as well the ETG6 Airdream 90 bhp model are off ered. Th e Berlingo off ers a maximum load capacity of 4.1 cubic metres and payloads up to 896kg.

Prices for the new Berlingo range from €13,090 to €19,200 ex-VAT

(€16,055 - €22,984 retail).

Citroën revises Berlingo

Mercedes-Benz has launched an all-wheel drive version of the new Sprinter, the

Continental Irish Van of the Year for 2014. It is, states Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles, the only ex-factory all-wheel-drive van with ESP.

Using an on-demand system, all-wheel-drive is activated by the push of a butt on activating the Electronic Traction System (4ETS) that distributes the torque in a 35:65 front/rear ratio. Th e standard-fi t Adaptive ESP remains active regardless of whether all-wheel-drive is activated or not.

Adding extra capability for use in challenging terrain, the Sprinter 4x4 can be optionally fi tt ed with an additional reduction gear, which shortens the gearing by 42%. And to aid drivers when descending tricky slopes, an optional Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) system keeps the vehicle at a preselected constant speed.

Mercedes-Benz isn’t marketing the Sprinter 4x4 as an off -road vehicle, but compared to the regular van, the all-wheel-drive variant has a raised body – by 110mm in the front, and 80mm in the rear. Th e addition of the all wheel traction only adds about 120 kg in weight, meaning payloads are similar to conventional vans. Fuel consumption returns are around 0.4 – 0.8 l/100km poorer than rear-wheel-drive Sprinters.

Th e Sprinter 4x4 is available in right hand drive via special order through Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle dealers in Ireland. Prices are approximately €9,000 (ex-VAT) more than the equivalent regular vehicle.

Meanwhile the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Catloc range has been extended. “Following the introduction of the Catloc security device for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter last year, the Catloc range now includes the recently launched Euro 6 Sprinter, which recently won the Continental Irish Van of Th e Year

2014 award,” explained Terence Maguire, Mercedes-Benz Parts Manager, Motor Distributors Ltd.

Th e Catloc is available for the full range of Euro4/5, Euro5B+ and now Euro6 engine types and prices start fr om €169 + VAT, fi tt ed. Catloc can be ordered and fi tt ed by your local authorised Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle dealer.

Mercedes-Benz brings all-wheel capability to Sprinter

In order to meet increased customer demand and successful growth in the West of Ireland,

Northgate has relocated its Limerick branch next to St. John’s Cathedral on Cathedral Place. Th e new site will house up to 400 vehicles, together with a fully equipped workshop and caters for short, medium and long-term commercial vehicle rentals.

On the move, Darren McNamara, Branch Manager at Northgate Limerick commented, “Th e new branch location at Cathedral Place is well situated in Limerick, allowing us to deliver our appealing and fl exible vehicle hire off ering to local businesses. Northgate Limerick moves Hyundai i-Pro X-Cels!

On top of off ering class-leading specifi cation on the standard i-Pro van, Hyundai Ireland is raising the bar even higher with the introduction

of the range topping Xcel trim level.

In addition to the Cruise Control, Bluetooth and USB connections, leather steering wheel and LED daytime running lights, the Xcel has air-con, alloys, auto lights control and centre arm rest. Th e i-Pro, based on the successful Hyundai i30, 3-door hatch is powered by an economical 1.4 litre 90-bhp/220Nm diesel providing a payload of 515 kg. Xcel is priced at €18,995.

J ust over six months into his position as Head of Brand Fiat Professional for EMEA Region, Henrik Starup-Hansen complimented the ‘team

of passionate professionals, who create something more than vans’ in describing “the people behind the solid function on which one brand is set.” Mr. Starup-Hansen, who has many years experience with Fiat Auto Group’s sister brands CaseNewHolland and Iveco, took stock of his time to date at Fiat’s Light Commercial Vehicle Division in the presence of members of the International Van of the Year jury at Fiat’s Centro Stile in Turin. “Th is is the treasure I found in Fiat Professional,” he enthused, “You know, when you are called to drive a brand like Fiat Professional, you need to know what’s going on behind the scenes, to evaluate what are the strengths you can count on and the weaknesses you have to fi x and in my fi rst six months as Head of Fiat Professional I had the pleasure to work with a team of people who ‘can do and do it well’ who along the years were able to set up and consolidate the fi rst brand totally dedicated to the Light Commercial Vehicle market.”

Henrik went on to decipher the word ‘dedicated’ through a series of facts, fi rstly with a look back at the company’s heritage in the business. “Fiat Professional can claim over a century of expertise in the market and already at the beginning of the 20th century was well aware of the importance of off ering a complete line up, spanning from chassis to cargo cab, from Crew Cab to Tipper. Th en we had 110 years to work on our range and nowadays Fiat Professional has a complete product off er that starts from the litt le Panda Van, to the 4.25 tonnes of gross vehicle weight of the current generation Ducato. Secondly, not only has Fiat Professional a complete line up, but it is also the brand with the widest off ering in the marketplace. For each of our products we can propose a rich selection of bodies, wheelbases, lengths, heights and gross weight vehicle rating classes.”

“Fact number three – Fiat Professional can count on a network of highly professional partners. Along the years we have created a strong network of 1,500 dealers and over 2,500 points of sales in Europe, Africa and Middle East that meet rigorous standards to be always close to Fiat Professional customers. Th rough our network we can also guarantee competent and rapid assistance; thanks to the availability of more than 6,500 service points – all fully equipped for the maintenance and repair of Fiat Professional vehicles.” He concluded with fact number four, which highlighted expansion plans for the brand worldwide. “Our LCV range has a global task. Global because of the distribution of production sites that spans from Turkey to Italy and France, up to Central and South America, and Global because of the coverage. Our vehicles are sold in the whole world, including, Europe, Africa and Middle East – which is the EMEA region I represent, Asian and Pacifi c markets, South America under the Fiat brand and now even in North America – where last September we introduced our Ducato under the RA M brand.”

Mr. Starup-Hansen then spoke about the DNA of Fiat Professional citing “Heritage, People, Product, Network, Service, Global reach: these are the strengths on which Fiat Professional has built its positioning. Here again let the numbers speak for itself. We will close 2013 with almost 250,000 units sold in the EMEA Region. In Europe – with a share of 12% – Fiat Professional is the third Commercial Vehicle manufacturer.

Th is is a positioning we reached thanks to the good results of each product of our range, and particularly, of Ducato which is fi rmly on the second step of the podium, with over 20% market share, and of Fiorino which is number one in its segment with 41% market share.”

“Th is is the picture of Fiat Professional, a starting point for my team and me on the base of which we are already working to build the future of our brand. Th at statement is strongly linked with the future of the Ducato. In 33 years of continuous innovation and success, Ducato has become a ‘brand within the brand’ the workmate and the travel companion of more than 2.6 million customers that have chosen it since 1981. Th is year, with 133,000 units sold, Ducato represents 30% of our sales worldwide. In Europe, following a constant growth along the years, with over 20% Ducato in 2013 has reached its best share ever. Ducato has proven to be leader in our region – fi rst in ten markets, second in fi ve and third in two. Along the years Ducato crossed the European boundaries and is now sold in more than 80 countries all over the world including North America this year, where it has been launched under the RA M brand, changing its name in ProMaster. With the opening of the new assembly plant dedicated to ProMaster in Saltillo, Mexico to add to the Sevel plant in Atessa here in Central Italy and to the Sete Lagoas plant in Brazil, Ducato is now produced in 3 countries and sold worldwide, which makes it a true global vehicle, our worldwide van.”

His fi nal words were “Th e Ducato is a real market leader which will lead the future global growth of Fiat-Chrysler Group in the Light Commercial Vehicle sector.”

SS even million miles (equal to 275 round-the-world trips) of extensive durability tests indicate the extremes Ford has gone to to ensure the all-new Ford Transit 2-tonne will meet their own and customer’s expectations. Ford’s

engineering team promises through its marketing colleagues that the latest Transit “combines best-in-class cost of ownership with unbeatable load carrying capacity for European customers.” Best in class ownership (TCO) not only includes day-to-day fuel effi ciency but also reduced regular maintenance and repair costs.

According to Paul Randle, Vehicle Line Director, Global Commercial Vehicles, Ford of Europe, “Ford’s fl agship Transit model is once again sett ing the standard in its class by cutt ing running costs, shift ing bigger loads and pioneering valuable new technologies. All this together with a vast choice of model options and of course legendary Transit toughness,” he said.

Th e new model is another element of a busy twenty-four month renewal programme undertaken by Ford for its entire commercial vehicle with another new addition also coming on stream. Th e new line-up includes the Ford Transit Custom (1-tonne model) and Ford Transit Connect, which both went on to win the coveted International Van of the Year in consecutive years 2013 and 2014. Th is summer will herald the arrival of the Transit Courier, which enters the mini-cargo segment.

Based on a new global platform, the new Transit replaces the heavier Transit derivatives in Ford’s commercial vehicle line-up. Although termed the 2-tonne, its payload capacity extends to 4.7 tonnes.

Th e new generation Transit was developed under the ‘One Ford’ product strategy and will go on sale in six Continents, with North America the key worldwide market its main priority. Ford, is not alone in this move as Mercedes-Benz and Fiat Professional are looking to the United States for sales volume growth. Available here later this year, the 2-tonne Transit will be built at the Ford Otosan factory in Kocaeli, Turkey while the North American versions, which will eventually take over from the best selling E-series range, will be manufactured in Kansas City, alongside the Ford F-150 Pick-Up truck.

Th e standard powertrain for the new Transit is as before with the 2.2 litre Duratorq diesels off ering 100 PS/125PS/155PS mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Th ere will be two Euro 6 engines at the latt er end of the power range. Again front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and all-

wheel-drive versions will be off ered. On the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) advantages, service intervals now extend to 2 years/50,000 kilometres, with the time required for scheduled maintenance over 120,000 kilometres cut from 5.4 to 4.2 hours over the outgoing model. For example, the labour required for a rear brake disc repair has been shaved-off from 2.6 to 1.3 hours.

Vans are available in three diff erent lengths and two diff erent roof heights. Model-for-model, load volume has been increased by around 10% compared to the outgoing range. For instance, the L2 van’s maximum volume with standard full steel bulkhead has risen from 10.3 to 11.2m3 enabling it to now transport four euro pallets and carry 3.0m length items along the fl oor. Th e largest Jumbo van can swallow 15.1m3 of cargo behind the bulkhead. Th e side load doors now have an opening width of 1,300 mm for easier loading and unloading especially with forklift trucks.

Additional variants of the new Transit range comprise of Crew Cab vans, Chassis Cab and Double Chassis Cab with the new L5 Chassis Cab capable of accommodating 5 metre fl oats or box bodies while the Transit Bus range can carry up to 18 passengers. Th ese latt er confi gurations will be launched later this year.

Drivers will immediately notice that the cab off ers signifi cantly more space with increased shoulder room, head clearance and visibility, and a more comfortable driving position with a steering column fully adjustable for rake and reach. An all-new interior console design, derives

directly from some of its car siblings and incorporates a number of clever storage areas together with a full-width overhead shelf and a large hidden compartment under the dual passenger seat. As the van will be also used as a mobile offi ce, a broad selection of convenience features from Ford’s latest passenger cars can be specifi ed, including the Ford SYNC voice-activated, in-car connectivity system, limited to an innovative AppLink feature – which enables drivers to control their favourite Smartphone Apps using voice commands.

An additional safety feature with the SYNC system is Emergency Assistance, which allows occupants to call the local emergency services operator in the event of an accident, a valuable facility for the professional driver. Further in-cab technologies available to enhance driver awareness and confi dence for those long hours behind the wheel comprise of:-

Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Alert• Lane Keeping Alert and Driver Alert• Rear View Camera with Trailer Hitch Assist• Static Cornering Lights• Tyre Pressure Monitoring•

Apart from the latest Electronic Stability Control technology, a new Ford developed programme is added called Curve Control. Th is is designed to slow the vehicle in a safe and stable fashion when it enters a bend like a motorway exit ramp too quickly.

Transit ECOneticAs per the previous edition, a low emission, frugal ECOnetic version of the new Transit will be in the line-up, delivering class leading CO2 emissions from 169 g/km with the version fi tt ed with the fi xed 100 kp/h speed limiter with an estimated 44.1 mpg/ 6.4L /100 km return, this latest version further reduces fuel consumption by a further 6%.

Unveiled at the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association Show in Las Vegas, the reigning International Van of the Year has been transformed from a versatile load mover to a full size race-ready machine based on the extremely popular Hot Wheels concept.

“Th e Hot Wheels design team jumped at the chance to hot rod a Transit Connect van,” said Felix Holst, Vice-President of creative for Matt el Wheels Division.

Th e Hot Wheels brand has produced more than 4 billion model cars since fi rst introduced by Matt el in 1968. “Th e idea was to create a race-inspired support vehicle for the average guy to spend a weekend at the track testing his Hot Wheels race car.”

“The Hot W heels Transit Connect features an entirely custom, euro-look wide body kit, Rotiform ROC wheels, sleeping quarters and a Sortimo tool storage for living the dream that most of us had playing with Hot Wheels as a child,” Felix added. “It even has slide-out drawers to keep your favorite Hot Wheels cars with you at all times.”

Cancer Awareness charity Th e Marie Keating Foundation has put a new Volkswagen Caddy Maxi van on the

road courtesy of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland as part of a new sponsorship partnership. “We are delighted to support the Marie Keating Foundation as we recognise the vital work that they carry out everyday around the country. We wish them well in the year ahead and we hope that by providing the Caddy Maxi we can contribute to the work they carry out and provide support of those who need it,” stated Niall Phillips, Head of Sales & Marketing, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles at the presentation. Th e Marie Keating Foundation raises much needed funds for Cancer Awareness and their work is carried out through a number of channels including the Marie Keating mobile units which travel

countrywide staff ed by registered nurses providing cancer information to men and women of all ages. Th e foundation also runs a schools programme, which reaches students in the senior cycle of secondary schools. Th e organisation operates a hospital oncology waiting room refurbishment programme and administrates a comfort fund for people experiencing fi nancial diffi culty during their cancer treatment.

Based on the award winning NV200, Nissan has unveiled the new face of its Taxi for London, re-designed

to make it instantly recognisable as one of the British capital’s iconic black cabs.

In response to feedback from the London Mayor’s offi ce, Transport for London and other key organisations which have put their backing behind the new taxi, Nissan has redesigned the vehicle to bett er refl ect

the iconic nature of the traditional black cab.

launched in December 2014 with a modern, clean, 1.6-litre petrol engine equipped with an automatic gearbox. Furthermore, Nissan will launch a zero emission electric version of the NV200 Taxi in 2015.

Among the specifi c changes that have been made to the front of the NV200 Taxi are round headlamps and a re-modelled grille mirroring the traditional black cab ‘face’ while LED lighting improves visibility of the traditional taxi sign.

In the United States Autobytel.com has named the 2014 Ram 1500 as the winner of its “Pick-

S printer is fast approaching its twenty year anniversary,

and the way it has kept with the times is quite remarkable. Looking back, the original launch model now appears dated, though only when compared directly to more contemporary versions, no doubt today’s Sprinter will look dated in another twenty years. While the latest version delivers some slight styling tweaks, the real changes lie in the

application of technology, and again Mercedes-Benz’s new Sprinter is sett ing the standards in a similar fashion to each of its predecessors since 1995.

At fi rst glance the external appearance seems litt le changed and to a large extent this is the case. Th ere are some subtle diff erences around the front and rear lighting clusters, and a larger grille to handle cooling requirements for the Euro 6 version. In reality there is not a great deal of radical new design anyone can apply to a large box shape as found in this class of vehicle and still retain its functionality. What the new Sprinter comes with are impressive enhancements in the areas of safety, fuel consumption, and operating costs.

Using a Sprinter fi tt ed with the four cylinder OM651 Euro 5b+, Mercedes-Benz claims a new standard in fuel economy of 6.3 l/100 kms. Th is is 20% less in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions over the previous model. Th e benchmark used is the ‘New European Drive Cycle’ (NEDC). Interestingly the same fi gure is claimed for both Euro 5b+ and Euro 6 versions of Sprinter, and at 6.3 l/100 km, fuel consumption is bordering on saloon car territory. Savings in operating costs have also been realised, with service intervals now extended to 60,000 kms.

Mercedes-Benz believes that savings and effi ciencies for operators are not just to be found with improved fuel consumption or increased carrying capacity, and this is especially true in the van sector. By focusing on diff erent aspects of safety, the company can off er some signifi cant savings depending on the type of work Sprinter is used for. Some of the features are standard, though many of the systems are optional extras, as this is very much a matt er of choice for the individual operator. If for instance, the van is used for city centre parcel deliveries, or driven to a site and parked for the day, cruise control is of litt le value and won’t provide the necessary savings. However, if the mainstay of the work is longer distance intercity work, then cruise control is arguably a necessity. Similar issues arise with the other systems, however the blind-spot warning light in the rear view mirrors benefi ts all areas of work with particular benefi ts in city and urban areas. Aft er a week driving the van we found this system invaluable.

One of the more interesting safety systems fi tt ed as standard on Sprinter is ‘Cross Wind Assist’ (CWA). We were fi rst introduced to CWA at a test facility in Germany, where the benefi ts were clearly demonstrated. Fortunately, during our Irish test drive we experienced one of the windiest days of the year, allowing us to feel the full benefi ts of CWA on our distribution run down to Rosslare and the (sometimes) sunny South East.

Vehicle instability caused by cross winds is a problem suff ered by all high sided vehicles, and arguably more so with high-sided vans. As a rule drivers get accustomed to the sensation and compensate with almost automatic adjustments of the steering wheel. Nevertheless, for the occasional sudden gust, or when overtaking other high-sided vehicles, CWA will activate and keep the Sprinter on track by engaging the ESP system to maintain control.

CWA is one of fi ve safety systems available for Sprinter. Our test van included warning systems for Lane Departure, Collision Prevention Assist, High Beam Assist, along with the Blind Spot and CWA programmes. Previously these systems may have been considered as ‘nice to have’ rather than important, and few would consider paying the additional cost. Nonetheless insurance underwriters are also seeing the advantages of such safety systems, and are beginning to account for them in their premiums. In addition, if a vehicle can be prevented from being involved in an incident, it stays on the road and keeps working. Whereas if it is off the road being repainted, the per day cost, plus the cost of repair can far outweigh the initial outlay for the accident prevention system. Recently RSA Insurance

TEST I | 13highlighted that an incident could cost an operator up to four times the initial accident value, in indirect costs related to non-recoverable excess, increased premiums, employee absence and reputation.

Th e driver’s seat in the Sprinter off ers a wide range of adjustments and provides a formal (and probably correct) seating position. Th e well fi nished modern interior comes with ample storage and overall the interior is well thought-out for the delivery driver. In-cab ergonomics are fi rst class with all controls and switchgear perfectly functional, and work simply in that reassuring Germanic fashion. Th e only complaint was that the heater fan was a touch noisy, even at slow speeds. However it is strangely comforting that such a minor detail is all we can complain about, and in truth you only noticed it being noisy when you switched it off .

Sprinter, as with many light commercials would benefi t if the parking brake was moved to the dash, or replaced with an electronic version. Unfortunately as manufacturers will tell you electric parking brakes are not cheap, and in this price sensitive market sector, possibly prohibitively so.

Another noteworthy aspect of Sprinter was the absence of the bodywork ratt les and squeaks normally associated with driving any panel van. Th is would indicate a high level of build quality, and would certainly be of benefi t in the other Sprinter variants for crew cab or passenger transport. In fact the Mercedes delivers a quiet and sedate drive making it easy to forget that you are driving a sizeable commercial vehicle.

Sprinter is one of the larger vehicles in this class, though it is easy to drive and surprisingly nimble despite its size. Although a defi nite plus is the roof mounted reversing camera, particularly when manoeuvring in the city centre or around the modern retail parks - the ones designed with access for nothing bigger than a family hatchback. At speed on the Motorway, even in strong winds the rear wheel drive van feels positive and surefooted, with possibly some small benefi t derived from the chassis being lowered by 30 mm. Th e positive road holding was boosted with a set of Continental Vanco 2 (235/65) tyres which coped well with the torrential rain and pooling water.

Driveline options for Sprinter now include the 7G-Tronic Plus Automatic. Th e 7G-Tronic Plus would especially benefi t passenger operations, or where a van may have a number of diff erent drivers with diff erent levels of ability. Our test version came with a six-speed Eco-shift manual, which

was specifi cally developed for Sprinter. Th e ECO-Shift has quite a short 1st gear and with the max torque of 360 Nm being delivered at 1,400 rpm, moves the van quickly from stop. Th e 360 Nm holds through to 2,400 rpm and returns low engine speeds from a long 6th gear when cruising. Gear selection is positive and precise from the well-placed lever and the transmission is comfortable to work with either around town or on the longer runs.

Almost two decades aft er its launch, and with over 2.5 million units sold in over 130 countries worldwide, Sprinter has been a major success for the German manufacturer. Th e continuous development of the vast Sprinter range, means it consistently sets new standards for the light commercial sector - and improved effi ciencies for the operator.

SsangYong Korando - Competent & Classy

I t appears the strengthening respect for Korean-made consumer electronics is being mirrored in the automotive industry. Korean vehicle producers are

earning a formidable reputation and steadily increasing their share of the European vehicle market. With this in mind SsangYong’s return to the Irish scene is timely and welcome, as was our chance to see what SsangYong’s Korando Commercial has to off er the business user in the SUV van sector. Th e SsangYong brand has had a chequered history in Ireland, and many might not be that familiar with the marque - however that is all about to change. SsangYong is now part of the Indian conglomerate Mahindra & Mahindra, a company that can trace its automotive heritage back to 1947 when it began assembling the iconic Willys Jeep under licence. Th e SsangYong range is distributed in Ireland by the Harris Group and with a prominent nationwide dealer network now in place, SsangYong is set to off er customers some interesting alternatives to the more traditional European brands.

Historically some vehicles from the Far East have never fully engaged the European psyche, and oft en this was att ributed to the exterior design appearing slightly dated. SsangYong addressed this by turning to the people who created some of the most revered vehicles in automotive history, Ital Design – and it has worked. Th ey have fashioned a contemporary design that has an air of quality and distinction. A small example would be the twin tailpipes that lend a touch of class, and fi nish off the Korando’s rear profi le fi tt ingly.

First impressions are important, and once you slide into the driver’s seat you get the sense that Korando has a lot to off er and overall the Commercial SUV has a solid positive feel. Interior trim and ergonomics are much improved on previous models and are now closer to the standard of European producers, though the trip data display could be a litt le clearer. Korando has cruise control as standard, and the control is positioned about 4 o’clock on the steering wheel,

a novel idea that works quite well.

Th e high mounted heated seats off er an excellent driving position and allow superb visibility. Standard spec is higher than many of the competitors and comfort levels are fi rst class for a small Commercial. Running empty we found none of the ratt les or noise from the cargo area that are sometimes found in commercial versions of passenger cars. Th e Korando is surprisingly quick and the car class comforts in the cockpit lend to its overall appeal and practicality as a business vehicle.

Load volume is generous and will accommodate a standard euro pallet without diffi culty. A sturdy bulkhead allows maximum use of the space available, and the payload capacity of over 500 kgs should meet most requirements in this segment. A wide, high lift ing rear tailgate gives easy access to the load area, and with the rear passenger doors still in place, it is easy to retrieve smaller items without having to climb into the cargo bay.

Korando is fi tt ed with SsangYong’s own Euro 5 compliant 2.0 litre common rail unit delivering 149 hp. Th e four cylinder diesel links to a 6-speed transmission which has a solid and precise shift patt ern. When empty, fi rst and second can seem quite short, though when loaded they are well spaced. With 360 Nm of torque available, Korando comes with impressive towing credentials of up to 2,000 kgs.

SsangYong Ireland appears to have done its homework thoroughly. It has kept the positive aspects of the passenger car, and delivered a Commercial version that’s enjoyable to drive, and easy to work with. Korando is a welcome newcomer to the Commercial SUV market, and whether operating as a delivery van, or service unit it has a lot to off er a wide variety of professional users. On the business side it deserves serious consideration in the value for money and practicality stakes. It has been recognised by the IMWA voting it Continental Irish Commercial SUV 2014

In addition SsangYong is backing its Korando with a fi ve year or 150,000 km warranty, and fi ve year roadside assistance. Th at said, our drive in SsangYong’s Korando Commercial gives the sense that it’s a warranty the company can aff ord to off er because it’s unlikely to be needed. Either way it’s win win for the customer.

Ford Focus - Small Van or Stylish Hatch?

E ver acknowledging the history behind the Blue Oval’s commercial range (especially the nostalgia evoked by Transit),

Ford customers are exceptionally loyal to the brand. However, it is possible for brand loyalty to create a degree of tunnel vision, and so be misplaced.

Yet, faced with increasing levels of competition, Ford’s Light Commercials continue to win favour with customers and consistently retain their impressive market share. With so many quality vehicles available to the business user, how does Ford manage to keep its customers coming back again and again? Like many of its competitors the Focus Van is based on the passenger car version, which in this case means it is starting from a good place. Th e Focus is one of Ford’s most popular and biggest selling models as is clearly apparent everyday on the roads of Ireland. It has a familiar and stylish presence that can be easily enhanced with some creative sign-writing to promote a company’s image. Even our test unit with the unmissable ‘Focus Van’ livery added a touch of panache. Noticeable is the fact that this version now has 5-doors unlike the 3-door hatch used for previous generators.

What fi rst impresses with the Focus van is the build quality. Ford uses the same standards as found in the passenger car and just because it is a commercial, did not skimp on the spec. Th is is important because while the van may be used for work or business. Th e driver may spend a great deal more time in the van than the average commuter will in their car. It can be their offi ce and place of work and should be at least as comfortable as their colleague’s workplace, something the Focus van certainly is. Especially if you opt for the ‘Edge’ version we tested. Some of the features this package includes are air conditioning, stereo with 3.5” screen display, leather trimmed steering wheel, and Eco-Mode, with further options available.

On the performance side, the fi ve-door Focus van is a great drive. Th e 1.6 litre TDCI diesel is smooth and feels very solid, as indeed does the

whole car. Likewise the six-speed transmission delivers a definite and precise shift when changing the nicely spaced ratios, making the driving experience more enjoyable. Just because it is a van does not mean you can’t enjoy your work, and that is one aspect which is pleasing with the Focus van. Aft er a day spent working, you would have no diffi culty going back out again in the evening. Along with being enjoyable, the Focus van is also easy to drive. A point not to be underestimated with work vehicles in the B licence category, where it is possible for a company’s drivers to have a full licence, though not a lot of ‘driving for work’ experience.

Focus sits on the road with a wide track and scores well on road holding. Our test unit came with 215/55 R16 tyres, which further enhanced the stability, and gave it a more sporty positive feel. Less like a van, and more like a hot hatchback, fi nished with an additional spoiler on the rear tailgate.

Ford has progressively improved the quality of its product range over the past few years both in standards and performance - one fi ne example being the new Transit Custom. Similarly the Focus van benefi ts from the same improvements. Loading capacity comes in at 1,148 litres and the well fi nished cargo area is rated for a payload of 581 kgs - signifi cant for

a small van. Importantly, suitable anchorage points ensure load securing requirements can be met, and as the load can be accessed through either the rear tailgate or rear doors, it improves the overall practicality.

On the fuel consumption side Ford claims a combined fi gure of 4.5 l/100 kms, and we found this a fair guide as we managed a respectable 4.9 l/100 over our test route in somewhat unfavorable weather. For the business user in need of a small light commercial, Ford’s Focus delivers a van as stylish as its passenger models, with good fuel consumption and sporty hatchback-like drive - it is easy to see why customers keep coming back.

W ith a 3% increase in Light Commercial Vehicle sales recorded during 2013, the business end of the automotive industry is heading in the right direction at last. Expect to see a bigger upturn next year as

Euro 5 engine models will be phased out and replaced by the next stage of EU emission legislation. Van manufacturers will be busy throughout 2014 introducing fresh versions with Euro 6 technology. From early February the covers will come off the new Ford Transit 2-tonne followed by the all new Courier Connect, a mini-cargo panel van that will compete with the Fiat Fiorino, Peugeot Bipper and Citroën Nemo. Th e Renault/General Motors (Opel/Vauxhall) and Nissan Alliance will reveal the new Trafi c/Vivaro/Primaster while the summer sun will shine on the new Fiat Ducato and Mercedes-Benz Vito as well as Fiat’s sister brand Iveco with yet another new version of the Daily. Expect to see PSA Peugeot/Citroën variants of the Ducato during then too. Not forgett ing the new Iveco Daily also due this summer.

Most of these new vans will share the spotlights at the IAA European Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover next September and may be joined by the latest creation from Volkswagen, but this has yet to be confi rmed. Before then, the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC in Birmingham next April is likely to feature the new Fords and the Renault Trafi c and its Vauxhall compatriot the Vivaro, which will continue to be produced at the former Bedford factory located near Luton Airport.

For the purpose of this article, we take a closer look at all of the contenders in the 2014 Continental Irish Van of the Year awards from the Panel Vans, Car-Derived Vans and Commercial Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV). In fairness to all of the contestants, the manufacturer’s investment in improving every aspect of how the vehicle performs in terms of load capacity, reliability, versatility, driver comfort and now above all, Total Cost of Ownership shows, with the latest generation of Light Commercial Vehicles more refi ned and capable than ever before.

Packed with the latest safety technology, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter practically ‘blew away’ the opposition to take the overall title. Th at reference or innuendo was made

to acknowledge the new Crosswind Assist, a world fi rst for vans, introduced by Mercedes-Benz with the new Euro 6 Sprinter. Not only that but the provision of Collision Prevention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Highbeam Assist and Lane Assist as well as ESP as standard are all included in the new range of safety systems on board. Crosswind Assist ensure that the van remains safely on course when the wind is gusting strongly. Th en of course there is the new Euro 6 drivetrain (the fi rst for the sector) which according to Mercedes-Benz sets a benchmark in fuel consumption, delivering a combined cycle of 44 mpg/5.35l/100 km and a CO2

Nissan NV200

Since winning the International Van of the Year award for 2010, the Nissan NV200 panel van range has extended to become a unique taxi in North America (and London) and even an

electric version for certain European markets while not forgett ing the Lunar caravans built campervan (called the Vacanza) introduced in the UK last year. In the past 12 months, the NV200 van received a mid-term makeover which included the installation of an upgraded and more powerful 1.5 litre dCi diesel engine that now delivers 110 hp through a smooth 6-speed gearbox. Fuel consumption has not been hit as it returns 5.3L/100 km. Th e NV200’s compact dimensions hide a cargo volume of 4.2 cubic metres and thanks to its low fl oor - cargo, loading and unloading is easier. Payload is now at almost 800 kg. A revised dash area and a reversing camera are now part of the modifi ed interior off ering increased comfort levels.

Renault Kangoo

Did you know that the Renault Kangoo is one of the most popular vans across Europe? Since its launch in 2008, it has signed up over 400,000 business users whether in petrol,

diesel or electric forms. Now that the Phase 2 version is with us, it is clearly apparent what has been changed and improved. Starting with the new front end, with styling related to Renault’s new family appearance, new headlights and door mirrors complete the design change outside. In-doors there is a new centre console and steering wheel column. Th e latest Kangoo line-up builds on the strengths of its predecessor, especially when it comes to fuel effi ciency. Th e 1.5 litre dCi 75 and 90 bhp diesels feature Stop/Start technology and boast 4.3 litre/100 km or 65.7 mpg (equivalent to 112 g/km CO2).

Toyota ProAce

To replace the extremely popular Hiace, Toyota Europe decided to join ranks with PSA Peugeot/Citroën to produce a rebadged version of their Expert and Dispatch panel van.

Under the brand name ProAce, everything about this van range sold by Toyota is as the PSA product line. Litt le has changed except the Toyota logo placed here and there as necessary.

Both the 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre diesel engines from PSA are used to power the new ProAce, off ering 90 bhp/128 bhp and up to 320 Nm of torque. Available in panel van or crew cab confi gurations. Load capacity reaches up to 7m3 and payload to 1160 kg while the ProAce has a towing capacity of 2.0 tonnes. Th is ProAce project is seen as a stop-gap measure as the association with PSA is said to get stronger in the near future, with the plan to jointly design and produce a new medium sized panel van in the near future for global markets.

Mitsubishi Outlander Business

One of the most striking vehicles at the Continental Irish Van of the Year 2014 Awards Appraisal Day was the new Mitsubishi Outlander Business with its vibrant livery. Th e

4-wheel drive 2-seater Commercial SUV is powered by a 2.2 litre 150 PS diesel with 6 speed manual gearbox. Its emission fi gures include 138 g/km CO2, and the fuel consumption rating is 5.3 l/100km. Th e Outlander Business qualifi es for road tax of €333.00 and its VRT fee is €200.00.

Looking at the spec sheet, the Outlander Business is extremely well equipped with electrics all round and auto air-con. Bluetooth connection, Active Stability and Traction Control and Hill Start Assist are part of the safety items listed along with the required numerous airbags. To add to its premium feel, the multi-function three-spoke steering wheel has a leather surround as has the gear knob.

SsangYong Korando Sports

“It’s got Seoul,” is the promotional tag line used by SsangYong Ireland for its Korando range. We knew that, particularly with the Korando Sports Pick-Up, as it was one of the

more impressive entries in the 2012 International Pick-Up award. From the group test trials held at the renowned Proving Ground at Millbrook in Bedfordshire, the Sports ticked all the right boxes in terms of looks, comfort and off -road ability.

Th e 2.0 litre 155 PS Euro 5 diesel combining well with the 6-speed box whether it’s in two-wheel or four-wheel drive mode. During the recent storms, the Korando Pick-Up stepped up to the mark in helping to shift fallen branches from 120 year old trees in our driveway. Four wheel drive (4WD) was used to pull the stubborn, heavy load away without diffi culty. Another aspect of admiration of the Pick-Up is how it behaved on the road with excellent stability and comfort.

Mini Clubvan

If in the marketplace for a stylish yet practical van, take a look at the Clubvan, the fi rst Mini to be classed as a commercial vehicle under the BMW ownership era. Clubvan has all of the personality and

driving hallmarks of the Mini, whatever the shape or size. It has fi ve doors but only two seats. Stored cargo can be easily accessed through the double rear doors or via the (reverse) Club door on the driver’s side. Inside, the cargo stretches back 115 cm and is 102 cm wide, which relates to 860 litres of space and a payload capacity of 500 kg.

Interestingly, there are three types available based on the 1.6 litre diesel driveline – 98 hp Mini One Clubvan, the 122 hp Cooper and 112 hp Cooper D mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed auto box. Inspired by the Morris Mini Van from the 1960s, Clubvan is built in Oxford.

Car Derived VansToyota Auris Van – Continental Irish Car Derived Van of the Year 2014

In the C-segment commercial vehicle category known as the Car Derived Van segment, the Toyota Auris Van came out on top in the quest for the Continental Irish Van 2014 awards.

Th e 5-door hatch van with the 1.4 litre D-4D/6-speed transmission features a Stop/Start system with improved suspension and steering systems. Fuel consumption has also been improved by 12% compared to the previous model and emissions have been reduced by 14% to 110 grams.

With the extra doors and longer wheelbase, a 12% payload increase is provided. Th e interior of the Auris Van has more supportive steering and a host of safety fi tt ings such as Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and 7 airbags as standard. Other items as standard include LED Day-time running lights, USB and Aux in-connections plus follow me-home lights.

Ford Focus Van

Ford Ireland’s number one position in the CV sector was helped during 2013 with the introduction of the fourth generation Focus Van. Unlike its predecessors, it is based on the 5-door

hatchback and comes with a 1.6 litre TDCi 95 PS diesel engine. Th e new Focus Van also boasts a gross payload of 581 kg and with a load length of 1490 mm it has a load volume of 1148 litres. “Th e qualities of reliability, value, space and drivability that have made our current Focus passenger model the number 1 car in Ireland for the last number of years, are transferred to this commercial version,” commented Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford Ireland. ”Add to all this, great versatility, sleek looks, class-leading safety and security and its range of technology and you can see why the Focus Van is the complete package,” he concluded.

Hyundai i-Pro

Since the introduction of the i-Pro Commercial based on the i-30 passenger car, Hyundai Ireland has hit the ground running. Th e 3-door car derived van is unique in this fi eld

now that Ford and Toyota are converting the 5-door versions of their popular hatchbacks. Proving most popular in the fl eet sector the i-Pro now has two trim levels available, the basic and now Xcel which gets alloy wheels and other embellishments. Both variants are powered by an economical 1.4 litre diesel that produces 90 bhp and 220 Nm of torque. Standard spec on the i-Pro entry level is impressive, with leather steering wheel, cruise control, front fogs and Bluetooth/USB/iPod connections just some of the fi tt ings listed. Payload is 515 kg and its towing capacity is 1.3 tonnes. It has a turning circle of 5.3 metres and the i30 i-Pro CDV comes with 3 years/100,000 km warranty.
