SHAWN SAUNDERS Bass, Harmonica, Vocals, Producer
Hailing from Fredericton New Brunswick, Shawn Saunders started
doing sound for bands and recording with local bands on Community
TV while in high school. The thoughts of playing bass kept popping
into his head so he purchased that first bass guitar at age 37.
Dedicated to learning the bass and being in a band like his uncle,
he learned the basics quickly and started using his vocal abilities
as well. Shawn eventually joined a band that became FlatBroke and
later Flat Broke II. After moving to Alberta in 2006, Shawn played
with the Muskeg River Band, Emo Leblanc, Paul LePage, and joined
forces with Bonni MacDonald to create the current version of
FlatBroke. Shawn's influences include The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac,

FlatBroke Backline / Stage plot
Please refer to Shawn Saunders for all technical questions.
780-267-2608 or [email protected]
Ideal stage size is 10’ x 16’
Since we are a duo who plays with backing tracks and
instruments, FlatBroke travels with its own sound rig mixing system
for FOH and monitors. We can provide left and right audio signals
to the venue’s sound system if necessary. For smaller venues,
FlatBroke provides basic stage lighting, and an array of various
cables and power cords. We can provide pre-recorded background
music during breaks.
-
If the venue is providing sound reinforcement, the band can also
provide individual instrument outputs from our sound rig instead of
the final mix. We prefer to use our Bose system for stage sound
(monitor) and will mix our stage sound ourselves through our rig.
All sound outputs will be line level 1/4'” unbalanced outputs. We
recommend using DI’s from each output for long runs to the venue’s
mixer (typically 8 DI’s will be required). Outputs are as
follows:
Equipment list (backline)
1 Bose tower
1 Fender bass amp with DI output on XLR
1 Samson wireless for Bass Amp with DI
1 Sure SM58 wired microphones XLR
1 Sure SM58 wireless microphone with mono ¼” jack or XLR
1 Roland Juno DI keyboard with stereo 1/4” jack
1 Fiddle DI box with XLR output
1 Stereo (L/R) output from Laptop (2 x ¼” jack”)
Various personal audio monitors as required.
(Front line)
2 powered Peavey 15” 400W cabinet
2 unpowered 15” passive cabinet
2 powered Peavey 18” sub-woofer cabinet
Additional information:
We use foot pedals to control our backing tracks on the laptop.
Video monitors tied into the laptop for our use. Depending on the
stage layout, we may use small 18” video monitors on music stands
or larger floor video mounted monitors.

Re: FlatBroke Reference
The Millarville Rodeo Committee contracted FlatBroke to
entertain at the 18th Annual Rodeo which took
place August 1 – 3, 2014.
Our committee, as well as our rodeo spectators were very pleased
with the calibre of entertainment
that FlatBroke was able to provide for our event. The musical
entertainment was exceptional, and was a
great fit for those that attended our event. Their set up,
lights & sound equipment was wonderful.
All members of the band were very accommodating, and interacted
professionally with those who were
participating it the weekend’s rodeo activities. Additionally,
upon request Bonni sang our national
anthem for two of our rodeo performances during our grand entry
rides.
If you are considering hiring FlatBroke for any of your upcoming
events, they would come highly
recommended from the Millarville Rodeo Committee. And we look
forward to working with their crew

Local artist gives back through song By Claire Theobald,
Edmonton Examiner
Thursday, March 14, 2013 2:45:32 MDT PM
Local vocalist Bonni MacDonald is using her musical gifts to
give back to the church and community that welcomed her in by
donating the proceeds from her first solo album The Gift.
“It was a dream of mine. I never thought it would happen,” said
MacDonald. “To be able to do it for such a great cause is very
heartwarming.”
Bonni MacDonald, who said she has been singing since childhood,
has performed in venues in and around the Edmonton area for years.
After moving to Duffield, she says the Mewassin Free Methodist
Church went above and beyond to welcome her into their
community.
“If you’re a stranger, you set foot in that door of the church
and there’s always someone there to welcome you,” said
MacDonald.
“You really feel part of it right from the very first time.”
Still housed in the original structure built in 1936, the parish
is quickly outgrowing its 50-seat capacity, and hopes to construct
a new 4,000-sq.-ft. church and youth centre on the same property so
it can continue to welcome new members.
“It’s something that a lot of people have put a lot of hard work
into and I really want to see it happen,” said MacDonald.
The Gift was created as a way to raise funds for the church,
with MacDonald and nine other musicians all donating their time and
talent to put together the album.
Inspired by old country legends like Johnny Cash and Marty
Robbins, this gospel album incorporates some of MacDonald’s country
flair.
All profits from the sale of the first 500 CDs will be donated
directly to the church’s building fund.
“This is my gift to the church,” said MacDonald, “my way of
contributing and my way of giving back for all of the kindness and
everything that everyone there has shown me.”
Now in the final stages of development, The Gift will be first
available at their release party on Friday, May 31, at Duffield
Hall on First Street in Duffield, Alberta.
The event will feature a dinner, dance, live performance and
silent auction, with all of those proceeds going straight to the
church development fund.
“Being able to do this is a very rewarding feeling,” MacDonald
said, “and I’m very, very happy to do it.”
Tickets are available for pre-sale by phoning MacDonald at
780-666-5407.

FlatBroke makes sure Legion won’t go broke and celebrates CD
release By Thomas Miller, Spruce Grove Examiner/Stony Plain
Reporter

Parkland County-based band FlatBroke will perform at the
Strathcona Legion on Oct. 12. - Photo Supplied
Local band FlatBroke is heading into Edmonton for a show on Oct.
12 in order to help out the Strathcona Legion.
The Parkland County-based group performed at that legion when it
was going through some rough times in order to bring in some
business and help the legion stay alive so it can, in turn, help
the veterans in the area.
FlatBroke performs mostly classic favourites like Mustang Sally,
Margaritaville and These Boots are Made for Walking, which makes
their setlist perfect for the demographic at the legion.
So after their successful show a few months ago, they’re heading
back to that very legion to celebrate and hold a CD release party
in conjunction with the legion’s Oktoberfest celebration.
“They were in dire straits and potentially closing,” said Bonni
MacDonald, lead singer, about why they got involved with the
Strathcona Legion. “We weren’t sure if they were going to be able
to pull things out. So we came up with an event for them.
“It was wonderful, it allowed them to keep their doors open.
“We’ve always liked what the legion stands for and the legion
seems to be a clientele that we like to play to, who enjoy our
music.”
Shawn Saunders, the band’s bass player added that the importance
of the legion cannot be understated because of what they do for our
veterans.
“As far as we know, just about every legion across the country
(is in trouble). I can say that the one in Oromocto, New Brunswick
is going in fine style, because the last time I was there the place
was packed,” said Saunders with a laugh as he comes from New
Brunswick himself.
“When you think of veterans you think of the old guys in World
War II, but veterans are the guys over there right now. What
they’ve done in the past is what allows us to do what we do —
whatever we want. When we see that legions all over Canada are
having a hard time staying open because the older veterans are
dying off and their memberships are down.”
That includes Stony Plain, they added, and they will be holding
an event at the Stony Plain Legion in December in order to support
the local legion, as well, so keep an eye out for that, they
said.
For more information on FlatBroke’s concert at the Strathcona
Legion in Edmonton, give the legion a call at 780-433-1908.
For $20, you get the German supper, a drink and a ticket to the
dance featuring FlatBroke. Tickets at the door will be $25. The
show starts at 6 p.m. on Oct. 12.

Lack of support could mean another closure of Royal Canadian
Legion branch: presidentDave Lazzarino
Wednesday, May 22, 2013, 4:41 PM
Royal Canadian Legion logo
article
Another Royal Canadian Legion is facing possible closure if it
can’t find a way to attract support — but some are refusing to go
without a fight.
“The veterans are the ones that started this all off and that’s
what we’re there for, to serve the veterans,” said Bob Power,
president of the Royal Canadian Legion Strathcona Branch 595.
Power comes from a military family — his grandfather served in
the First World War and both his parents served in the Second World
War — but he is a member of that group of legion supporters who
hasn’t worn a uniform.
He said he owes it to people like his parents to try and keep
the legion alive.
-
“If it wasn’t for them, I don’t think our country would be like
it is today,” he said. “If we don’t realize what they’ve done for
us, there’s no point of living in Edmonton.”
Unfortunately, there is a present-day financial war to be
waged.
Power said at the beginning of 2012, the Strathcona branch had a
reserve fund of $250,000 in GICs, savings from when they owned a
large piece of land on 81 Avenue near 104 Street. But he said
someone signed a lease for the building they are now in at 91
Street and 51 Avenue that is costing $15,000 a month in rent. They
now have $50,000 left.
“They left me with a mess,” Power said, adding the support has
waned along with the funds. They have 347 members, down from almost
900 two years ago.
A recent executive meeting voted not to leave, despite the very
real threat of losing their charter if they declare bankruptcy.
The Strathcona branch is not the first to experience this kind
of financial stress. Decreasing numbers across the country have led
to many branches disbanding and others having to move to smaller
buildings.
“The problem you’ve got is the legion itself doesn’t seem to
attract many of the recent soldiers,” said Ret. Maj. David Haas.
“This is why the legions are in trouble. But of course, you don’t
have the huge wave of ex-servicemen.”
Haas has been a legion member in past but now connects with the
country’s military past by volunteering at the Loyal Edmonton
Regiment Museum. He said it is important for veterans to have a
place to find camaraderie after their service has ended.
“The wartime experience particularly put a lot of stress on
people and later they needed to talk with guys who could understand
that,” said Haas.
Power still has hope that the legion will survive but said it
depends on finding more support from Edmontonians. To attract that
support, the legion is holding a steak and lobster dinner and dance
May 25. Tickets are $30 and include food and a live band.

ROYAL CANADIAN LEGIONS BECOMING EXTINCT
EDMONTON, AB, May 22, 2013-Edmonton’s second oldest legion; The
Strathcona legion will be holding a steak and lobster dinner and
dance on May 25, 2013 in hopes to rejuvenate interest in the legion
and to stop the proposed closure of the branch at the end of
May.
Along with Norwood and Leduc branches, the Strathcona legion is
experiencing diminishing membership and low public support along
with high operation costs making it impossible to continue to
operate.
In 1944 a metal Quonset hut served as the temporary Strathcona
Legion for several years until construction of the more permanent
location was completed in 1952 at 81 avenue west of 104 street.
In 2003, forced to relocate from its historical building by low
membership and rising operation costs, the Strathcona Legion
secured a new location on the northeast corner of 91 Street and 51
Avenue.
The Royal Canadian Legion is an organization that serves
veterans and promotes remembrance across Canada and the world. The
Legion is open for membership to all Canadian citizens and members
of the Commonwealth. The legion is open to all members and their
guests, as well as members of the general public who wish to
visit.
The Strathcona legion hopes the upcoming dinner and dance
featuring popular local band FlatBroke will generate renewed
interest in legions and their importance to all Canadians.
