Flash is Dead The Future of Interactive Content for Kids
Flash is DeadThe Future of Interactive Content for Kids
Who this presentation is for
• Anyone who creates interactive content and/or games for kids.• Anyone who has existing Flash based content and is looking for
alternatives moving forward.• Anyone interested in entertaining, educating and engaging kids
including restaurants, sports franchises, kids products, educators, health care, entertainment companies, designers, developers and more.
The World has changed….
• Looking to the future, you’ll need to plan for replacing or retiring your existing Flash content or creating new content that will run on both mobile and desktop platforms without the need for plugins.
Mobile First
• Todays kids consume content and engage primarily on mobile devices• If you’re looking to reach kids, mobile is where you’ll find them.
Todays kids like and are engaged by things like…
• Games• Animation• Interactive experiences• Video• Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality
Flash and Mobile
• Flash support has never really been great on mobile devices and does not run on iPhones and iPads.
Why Flash Died
• Universal support on mobile never happened. • The industry had moved away from using FLV Flash video to other
more open video standards.• Flash has always been plagued with security issues and is constantly
exploited to compromise peoples computers.• Even Adobe has shifted their emphasis to HTML 5 technologies.• Browsers are either dropping support or disabling Flash content by
default.
So what are the alternatives?
• There are currently 2 primary alternatives for creating interactive content and games that run on both desktop and mobile.• HTML5 & JavaScript• WebGL
HTML 5
• HTML5 is the current web standard markup language• Supported on both Mobile and Desktop without need for plugins• HTML5 Video requires no plugins• HTML5 Canvas can be used for games and animation• A number of HTML5 game engines and animation frameworks exist
Game Engines and Animations Frameworks• Construct 2• https://www.scirra.com/construct2• Phaser• http://phaser.io/• CreateJS• http://createjs.com/• GreenSock• https://greensock.com/
WebGL
• WebGL is a JavaScript API for rendering interactive 3D computer graphics and 2D graphics and content within any compatible web browser without the use of plug-ins.

WebGL Resources• babylonjs• http://www.babylonjs.com/• threejs• http://threejs.org/• Unity3D• http://unity3d.com/
What’s your plan? Some questions to think about.• How important is mobile to your future plans and direction?• How will HTML5 and WebGL fit in with your future content
development?• Do you have the internal expertise? If not what new skills will you
need to acquire?• What will you do with your legacy content? Is it worth re-creating or
better to retire it?• If you don’t have the internal expertise, where can you go for help?
