Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve

• A peatland with outstanding natural heritage qualities

Finland, Lapland

Alan McDonnell
Nutters. This photo is a bit crap. The Finns invest heavily in providing facilities for people to visit, walk through and camp in their nature sites - walking, fishing, rafting....for local economic benefit, based on community aspirationsWe learnt about boardwalk construction, for a range of physical abilities and about new, higher standards for providing facilities

France, Brittany

Alan McDonnell
Bretons taught us to drink stinking alcohol, sing badly and about maintaining links with local communities, which are more closely connected to the land and to farming than in many parts of Scotland. They are especially active in involving young people at high school and college in managing their sites, partly thanks to close ties with the curricula.

Ireland, Offaly

Alan McDonnell
Irish partner's use of a reclaimed peatland after extraction for fuel - an inspiring use of various art media including film (digi-idol) and, most strikingly, sculpture to tell something of the histories of the peatlands and their use by man over the centuriesRecreation, tourism and education are the main goals for this work and there are clear links made between what the peatland sites can offer and the goals of the communities around those sites.

Opening Up the Moss

Alan McDonnell
CPPH helped to pay for the Flanders boardwalk, which has allowed people to access the bog safely for the first time - an essential first step in realising the NNR objectives and in allowing people to benefit from living near the Moss

Viewing Tower

• A unique perspective on Flanders Moss and a key to its interpretation

• Building the destination

• New opportunities for presenting the NNR within its landscape

The Oral History of Flanders Moss

Alan McDonnell
14 interviews with local people who have lived their lives around Flanders Moss - probably the last generation before the boardwalk to have any direct contact with the Moss, though maybe a bit late to have caught those who really used the moss extensively in farming etcInterested in their stories, memories and views on the Moss and its place in their landscape over time - material will be used to add a human side the stories we tell about the Moss
