So, your pool has gone green. Before you can begin to clean it up you need to decide which treatment plan is best for you.

Select your plan from the following 5 options.

Option 1

Pool water is clear with a light green colour. You can easily see the bottom of

the pool and it hasn’t been green for long.

Option 2

Pool water is medium green, cloudy or with quite a lot of debris on the bottom

and you are NOT IN A HURRY to clean it up.

Option 3

Pool water is medium green, cloudy or with quite a lot of debris on the bottom

and you are IN A HURRY to have it back to blue.

Option 4

Pool water is dark green or black and you are NOT IN A HURRY to clean it up.

Option 5

Pool water is dark green or black and you are IN A HURRY to have it back to blue.

STEP 1 TEST

Use a test strip or test kit to check the pH.

•pH less than 8.0—go straight to step 2,

•pH 8.0 or higher — decrease by adding acid (Bioguard Lo’N’Slo or Liquid Pool Acid). If you are unsure how much acid to add to your pool please phone or come in and see us.

Please note: You don’t need to decrease the pH to the normal range yet— for now 7.6-7.8 is fine. Once your pool is back to sparkling blue you can correct the pH when you rebalance the pool.

If your pH is less than 7.6 you may need to increase it in step 5 but for now don’t adjust it.

STEP 2 CLEAR

To aid with the clean up clear as much debris as possible from the pool. If your pool is free from debris move straight to step 3 now.

Start by emptying the skimmer basket then use your leaf rake to scoop the surface of the pool. When the surface is clear use your leaf rake to scoop the debris from the bottom of the pool. Once you have removed as much debris as you can, move on to step 3.

Please note: If there is a significant amount of debris in the bottom you should switch to option 2 or 3.

STEP 3 TREAT

Chlorine

Green pools come in many shades from a light green to almost black. As a rule of thumb, the darker the green colour, the more chlorine you will need.

Burnout Extreme is ideal for most pools and it come in a convenient pre-packaged dose so you just need to work out if you need one bag or two! Tip the Burnout Extreme into the skimmer basket with the pump running.

If your stabiliser level is getting high use BioGuard Cal Chlor. This is an unstabilised chlorine that requires premixing with water before adding to the pool. Follow the instructions on the container for dosage and preparation.

Pro Tip—it takes more chlorine than you expect to kill the green—follow the quantities recommended on the product and don’t be shy with the chlorine!

Algaecide

‘Do it Once, Do it Right!’ The addition of an algaecide all but guarantees the success of this process. Algaecides kill algae in a different way to chlorine. With a light green pool you may not need to add an algaecide, but not all light green pools are created equal —are you feeling lucky?

Remember, ‘Do it Once, Do it Right’ and add algaecide if you’re in any doubt. MSA Extreme or Polygard Concentrate are a great choice. Follow the instructions on the bottle for dosage and application.

Once the chlorine and algaecide are added turn your pump on to run constantly until all the green colour has gone. (You can turn the pump off overnight if it is too loud.)

Go straight to Step 4 now—don’t delay! Poolside Christchurch 123 Blenheim Road www.poolsidechristchurch.co.nz Page of 9 42

Page 10: Fix your green pool lower res - Poolside Christchurch · 2018. 12. 6. · Fix Your Green Pool 5 steps to turn your green pool blue Poolside Christchurch 123 Blenheim Road, Riccarton,

If there is any sign of green in the pool 48 hours after adding chlorine and algaecide:

•Check your pH and adjust if necessary

•Add more chlorine - the chlorine level in the pool needs to be very high to kill algae. When testing your level of chlorine it needs to be far higher than the normal range you aim to keep the chlorine level at.

•Add algaecide if you haven’t already. Some algaecides say you can add a second dose. Check your bottle to see if a second dose is recommended.

•Bring a water sample in for a phosphate test.

STEP 4 BRUSH!

This section is where you get your workout!

All the surfaces of the pool (sides, steps, floor) need to be vigorously brushed. Vigorous brushing removes the algae from the surface and allows it to be attacked from all sides by the chlorine and algaecide in the water.

Any algae left on a surface of the pool may not be killed and could lead to another algal bloom!

Once you’ve finished brushing the pool it will probably look worse than when you started—don’t worry that is what you should expect!

Move to the last step now.

Option 1 Light Green

STEP 5 CLARIFY

You can add clarifier as soon as you’ve finished brushing the pool or you can wait for the green to disappear before adding. If your pool is looking extremely

cloudy follow the instructions for Option 2 or 3.

If your pH was very low (less than 7.2) increase it now to between 7.4-7.6.

You have a choice of clarifiers—Pool Tonic or Polysheen Plus. Both Pool Tonic and Polysheen Plus can be added straight after step 4.

Pool Tonic is our favourite as it is a specially designed for ‘sick pools’. Pool Tonic will start clarifying the pool straight away but the reason we love it so much is that it uses the filter to do the work and saves you from vacuuming after it’s use. Pool Tonic also removes phosphates (a source of ‘food’ for algae ) from the water. Follow the instruction on the bottle for the correct dosage and application.

OR

Polysheen Plus is commonly known as ‘the blue liquid’ by many of our customers. This is a great clarifier to have on hand all the time. It works by taking tiny particles in the water and clumping them together to make a bigger particle. Small particles can pass through the filter back to the pool but by using the Polysheen Plus the larger particles are trapped and removed from the water.

Pro Tip Now that your pool is back to sparkling blue it’s important to get your water balanced and to try and identify why it went green. Understanding how it happened will help to prevent it from happening again. Follow the steps below to get the pool balanced again.

Bring a water sample into the store for a full analysis. Follow all of the recommended steps to properly balance your water. Regular addition of a preventative algaecide provides insurance against another green pool. AlgiGuard, MSA Extreme and Salt Pool Protector are good options for algae prevention.

Causes of Green Pool

• Insufficient chlorine residual in the water. Maintain a minimum of 2-3 ppm at all times over the swimming season.

• Lack of circulation. Over summer the pump should run 10-12 hours every day.

• Salt cell calcified or dead. • pH is too high. This is a

common issue with salt pools.

• Filter media needs changing. Over time media can become worn down and ineffective and needs to be replaced.

• Phosphates in your water. If you are struggling to clear a green pool or constantly battling to stop the green, bring in a water sample and ask for a phosphate test.

• Turning your pool off for winter. Talk to us to find out how to manage your pool over winter.

Step 5—CLARIFY

If your pH was less than 7.6 in step 1, increase it now to 7.6 or higher.

You have a choice of clarifiers—Pool Tonic, Water Sparkle or Power Floc Maxi. All three of these products can be added straight after step 4 or you can wait until the green colour has gone - either option is fine.

Pool Tonic is our favourite as it is specially designed for ‘sick pools’. Pool Tonic also removes phosphates (a ‘food source’ for algae ) from the water. Follow the instruction on the bottle for the correct dosage and application. If your pool is extremely cloudy, a second application of Pool Tonic may be needed. Don’t be tempted to use more than the recommended dose as it may cause a floc.

OR

Water Sparkle is a good option if you are trying to keep costs down. It will take longer to work than Power Floc Maxi but the result should be the similar. There are detailed instructions on the packet to follow for dosage and application.

OR

Power Floc Maxi is the fastest option for clearing the pool. It can work in as little as 8 hours. There are detailed instructions on the packet to follow for dosage and application.

Once the chlorine and algaecide are added turn your pump on to run constantly until all the green colour has gone. (You can turn the pump off overnight if it is too loud.)

Go straight to Step 4 now—don’t delay!

If there is any sign of green in the pool 12 hours after adding chlorine and algaecide:

•Check your pH and adjust if necessary

•Add more chlorine - the chlorine level in the pool needs to be very high to kill algae. When testing your level of chlorine it needs to be far higher than the normal range you aim to keep the chlorine level at.

Once you’ve finished brushing the pool, it will probably look worse than when you started—don’t worry that is what you should expect!

Move to the last step now.

STEP 5 CLARIFY

If your pH was less than 7.6 in step 1, increase it now to 7.6 or higher.

You have a choice of clarifiers— Water Sparkle or Power Floc Maxi. Both of these products can be added straight after step 4 or you can wait until the green colour has gone from the water.

Water Sparkle is a good option if you are trying to keep costs down. It will take longer to work than Power Floc Maxi but the result should be similar. There are detailed

instructions on the packet to f o l l o w f o r d o s a g e a n d application.

OR

Power Floc Maxi is the fastest option for clearing the pool. It can work in as little as 8 hours. There are detailed instructions on the packet to follow for dosage and application.

Please Note: When your pool has been extremely green you are unlikely to get it back to sparkling clear after the first vacuum of the floc. To continue to clear the water add Polysheen Plus or Pool Tonic to finish the clarification process.

This is a common issue

with salt pools. • Filter media needs changing. Over time

media can become worn down and ineffective and needs to be replaced.

• Phosphates in your water. If you are struggling to clear a green pool or constantly battling to stop the green, bring in a water sample and ask for a phosphate test.

• Turning your pool off for winter. Talk to us to find out how to manage your pool over winter.

STEP 3 TREAT

Chlorine

Green pools come in many shades from a light green to almost black. As a rule of thumb, the darker the green colour, the more chlorine you will need.

With a pool that is dark green to black you need to use a lot of chlorine. Cal Chlor and Liquid Chlorine are unstabilised chlorine and kill algae fast. It takes more chlorine than you expect to kill algae. To ensure you successfully kill the algae use triple the recommended dose of Cal Chlor or 10L of liquid chlorine for every 10,000L of pool water.

Warning—Wear old clothes when using these chemicals as if spilt they will both bleach the colour out of your clothes.

Algaecide

‘Do it Once, Do it Right!’ The addition of an algaecide all but guarantees the success of this process. Algaecides kill algae in a different way to chlorine.
